2008-08-29
There's only one wide release next week, so it's easy to choose the target film for this week's box office prediction contest, and that film is Bangkok Dangerous. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Bangkok Dangerous.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of The Little Mermaid on DVD, Deal on DVD, and Meet Bill on DVD.
Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Deal on DVD, as well as Hot Rod on DVD.
Additionally, one other entrant will be chosen and they will win the third copy of Deal on DVD, as well as Heading South on DVD.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

There were a boatload of were new releases on the rental charts this week, including the new number one renter, The Bank Job, which generated nearly 50% more revenue than its nearest competitor.

Another week without a first run release that is in contention for the DVD Pick of the Week. Granted, The Bank Job is worth picking up, but neither the two DVDs nor the Blu-ray have enough extras to be the DVD Pick of the Week. To find the best of this week's selection you have to look at the TV on DVD list and grab Eureka Season Two. Paradoxically, while the quality is low, the quantity is high, so much so that I had to split the list into two parts. Part two can be found here.

Flight of the Red Balloon rose to the top of the Per Theater Chart this week scoring an average or $17,611 in its two theaters. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was My Blueberry Nights with an average of $12,358 in six theaters.

Only 11 movies on this week's list, and nearly half of them had no site for the North American release. This made it rather dull reviewing the sites this week, but it did give me a chance to waste an hour or so playing Seashell Shuffle on Nim's Island's Official Site. But despite the addictive nature of that game, the winner of the Weekly Website Award was Leatherheads - Official Site.

It's hard to look at this week's list of limited releases and point to any of them and say, "That's this week's big hit." In fact, it is hard to find any films that have a better than 50/50 chance at serious expansion over the coming weeks.
