News Stories About The Last Mimzy

I Predict Premonition Will Win the Race on the Home Market Charts

2007-07-29

We finally saw a new release top the charts this week as Premonition was the number one renting and seller on the home market this week including taking in $7.29 million in rentals.

Triple Shot for Shooter

2007-07-21

Once again, new releases were unable to top the holdovers leaving Shooter in first place with $5.40 million over the week for a three-week total of $19.70 million.

DVD Releases for July 10, 2007

2007-07-09

Another slow week with little in the way of top-notch DVD releases. The best of the bunch is Extras - The Complete Second Season, but I'm a little worried about the inside nature of the humor. That said, it is still worth picking up, especially if you are the kind of person into movies enough to check out box office numbers, and I think that includes most people reading this column right now. On a side note, we only have two spotlight reviews this week, both of them for DVDs that were released last week. However, the double-shot of Canada and Independence Day meant they didn't arrive until it was too late for last week's column.

Blades Cut Competition to Shreds

2007-04-02

March ended on a similar tone as it began, but not as strong as recent weeks. Overall the weekend total gross was $128 million, down 5% from last weekend. That is also down 10% from the same weekend last year. However, it is important to note that was the weekend Ice Age: The Meltdown opened with nearly $70 million and 2007 is still 6% ahead of 2006's pace.

Moviegoers Cheer Mutant Good Guys

2007-03-27

Six wide releases in a single weekend appears to have been at least three too many as most struggled at the box office. On the other hand, with so many new films opening and so many different demographics being targeted, it was a good week at the box office overall with receipts hitting $133 million, up 14% from last week and 22% from last year. Year-to-date revenue has already hit $2 billion and is clocking in at nearly 6% higher than last year's pace. More importantly, the number of big hits is increasing interest, and that can have a positive effect on future earnings. I feel confident in saying records will fall this year.

Movie Website Updates for March 17 - March 23, 2007

2007-03-24

Good week for trailers with several on the list, including a trio of major summer blockbusters. However, while those site will obviously generate the most traffic, they are not award-worthy sites, (at least not yet). The best site this week is Pathfinder - Official Site.

Six Shooting for Top Spot

2007-03-22

There are six films opening in wide release this week, or at some level of wide release. This is at least three too many, and to make matters worse, several share target demographics. This insanity will mean that at least two films, possibly more, will fail to reach their potential. It also makes predicting the weekend extremely difficult because of the extra variables. Will Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appeal to just the younger crowd, or will fans of the original series also show up? If so, will this cut into the box office of The Hills Have Eyes 2 and Shooter? There's a lot to consider here.

Spartans Try to Hold Box Office Against Whelming Odds

2007-03-15

Three wide releases are opening this weekend, but none seem to have what it takes to overtake 300. On the other hand, none look like they will bomb either with all three tracking to finish in the top five. Even more importantly, the overall box office looks robust and should have an easy time keeping up with last year's pace.

300 Marches into Theaters

2007-03-08

One of the most talked about March movies opens this weekend, but there are some concerns regarding 300's ability to turn this talk into box office dollars. Should it fail to do so, Wild Hogs will be right there looking to become the second biker movie in a row to repeat at the top of the charts.

2007 Preview: March

2007-03-01

March, a month without a holiday. In fact, It's the only month without any holidays to help boost the box office and this prevents studios from releasing big blockbusters. However, it is not the weakest month either and there are a few midlevel hits coming out over the next four weeks and even a couple that could top $100 million

Movie Website Updates for January 27 - February 2, 2007

2007-02-03

Busy week for limited releases and a busy week for websites, which explains why I'm wrapping things up at midnight. There wasn't a whole lot on this week's list that really attracted my attention, but I'm giving the Weekly Website Award to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters - Official Site, mainly for their ... extracurricular activities of the viral marketers in Boston. And remember people, real bombs are meant to be inconspicuous, they won't sing you a song or make rude gestures at you.

Movie Website Updates for December 2 - December 8, 2006

2006-12-09

Good week for websites with a number of candidates for the top spot. In the end I went with Ghost Rider - Official Site, but there's a few others here that will undoubtedly win in the coming weeks.
