DVD Rentals - New Releases Show Quantity over Quality

2007-09-30

New releases were dominant on this week's rental chart with ten charting, including first place We Are... Marshall and its $4.59 million in rentals.

DVD Releases for September 18, 2007

2007-09-18

There are even more TV on DVD releases this week, many of them worth adding to your DVD collection. I would say that fans of TV on DVD might be tempted to mortgage their house in order to pay for all of the great sets coming out, but after the sub-prime meltdown, that's probably no longer an option. As for the DVD Pick of the Week, I decided to go with a David Hewlett double-shot with both Stargate Atlantis - The Complete Third Season and A Dog's Breakfast winning that honor.

Ocean's Luck Runs Out

2007-06-12

After three monster hits, it appears moviegoers might be undergoing some type of blockbuster fatigue. All three new releases wilted under the pressure at the weekend. Overall, the box office still increased from last week, but it was up less than 1% to $136 million and compared to the same weekend last year it was down 11%. Worse yet, 2007 has fallen below 2004's record setting pace for the summer season and that year wasn't as front-loaded as this year. On the bright side, we still have a tremendous number of potential $100 million movies and that's one record that is still within reach.

Pirates Hit Hard but not Knocked Out

2007-06-05

The post-holiday weekend saw a massive collapse at the box office, with receipts down 34% to $135 million. However, that collapse was entirely predictable. On the other hand, the film market fell below the same weekend last year, which is a lot more troublesome. Granted, the drop-off is less than one percent, and year-to-date 2007 is still showing strong growth, but it is concerning nonetheless.

Movie Website Updates for May 27 - June 2, 2007

2007-06-02

A busy week for new sites with roughly a dozen making their first appearance on this week's list. However, it was a site making its last appearance, Knocked Up - Official Site, that was judged best-of-the-best.

2007 Preview: June

2007-06-01

With the irrational exuberance of May over, June promises to be a solid month with a number of big hits opening. In fact, every week there's at least one film being released that has a legitimate shot at $100 million at the box office and two films that should hit $200 million. If both Ratatouille and Evan Almighty make it there, we will have six $200 million films so far this year, just two back of 2005's record. On the other hand, there are also a number of films on this month's list that may or may not open wide, and for most of these becoming a midlevel hit will be a chore.

Newcomers Try to Knock Pirates out of Top Spot

2007-05-31

The post holiday weekend sees three new releases, but for the first time in three weeks, there's no massive blockbuster on the horizon and there's little chance we will have a new number one at the box office.

Movie Website Updates for May 13 - May 19, 2007

2007-05-19

Either it was a really slow week or my Google-Fu is way off, because there's a short list this week. Not only were there very few new / updated sites, but there was nothing that jumped out as award winners. I was tempted to give the award to The Transformers - Official Site just for the new trailer, but I already geeked-out over that site when the first trailer came out. In the end there just wasn't a site worthy of the award this week.

Movie Website Updates for April 22 - April 28, 2007

2007-04-29

It's a slow week in terms of the cream-of-the-crop sites. There are a few that look like they could be award-worthy once they have a few more updates, but for the most part this week we have a collection that is rather average. There was one stand-out site, Evan Almighty - Official Site, and it was the only choice for the Weekly Website Award.
