News Stories About Sweet Land

Triple Shot for Shooter

2007-07-21

Once again, new releases were unable to top the holdovers leaving Shooter in first place with $5.40 million over the week for a three-week total of $19.70 million.

DVD Releases for July 10, 2007

2007-07-09

Another slow week with little in the way of top-notch DVD releases. The best of the bunch is Extras - The Complete Second Season, but I'm a little worried about the inside nature of the humor. That said, it is still worth picking up, especially if you are the kind of person into movies enough to check out box office numbers, and I think that includes most people reading this column right now. On a side note, we only have two spotlight reviews this week, both of them for DVDs that were released last week. However, the double-shot of Canada and Independence Day meant they didn't arrive until it was too late for last week's column.

Award Season - Little Miss Big Winner

2007-02-25

While the Independent Spirit Award announces their nominations earlier than anyone else, they only handed the awards last night. The two big winners were Little Miss Sunshine and Half Nelson, but both have to be seen as underdogs for tonight's Oscars.

Labyrinth Leads as Holdovers Dominate Per Theater Chart

2007-01-09

Pan's Labyrinth saw its theater count more than double this past weekend, but it was still able to win the race on the Per Theater Chart with $17,359 in 44 venues. Letters from Iwo Jima climbed to second place with $15,859, which represents a less than 10% drop-off from the weekend before. Notes of a Scandal showed amazingly strong resilience on the chart, as it dipped just 36% to $12,100, this despite quadrupling its theater count. Two other films just managed to top $10,000: Dreamgirls with $10,168 and Comedy of Power with $10,061.

Award Season - Fighting for Independence

2006-11-29

As always, Award Season officially begins with the announcing of the Independent Spirit Award nominations. While this is the first major awards to announce their nominations, they are one of the last to hand them out so the nominees have a long wait ahead of them.

Movie Queen's Reign Rivals Real Royalty

2006-10-17

The Queen led the per theatre charts for the third weekend in a row, taking in an average of $22,228 in its 46 theatres. Granted, the film has a while to catch up to the more than 50 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II, but this is still a very rare feat for a film to accomplish. Second place went to newcomer Sweet Land with an unexpected opening weekend average of $20,930. The only other film to top $10,000 was Little Children as the film held up very well, dipping less than 14% to $16,910.

Movie Website Updates for October 7 - October 13, 2006

2006-10-14

With more and more Oscar contenders getting ready to start their theatrical runs, it is fitting that a satire of such films, For Your Consideration - Official Site, takes home the Weekly Website Award.

Operation - Limited Release

2006-10-13

This week's selection of limited releases includes three films opening in the lamentable "Select Cities." Of the more limited limited releases, there are a couple of high profile films, including Deliver Us From Evil and the latest from Terry Gilliam, Tideland. It seems likely that the former will be the best on this list on the per theatre charts, but there are a few others that could be sleeper hits.
