News Stories About Mad Money

DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part I

2008-11-18

It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movies: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part two can be found here.

DVD Rentals - Rambo Fights to the Top

2008-06-10

There were more new releases to reach the top 30 on the rental charts, including Rambo, which was the new number one rental with $8.55 million in revenue. However, that was the only new release in the top five.

DVD Rentals - National Finds Treasure

2008-06-01

There were not many new releases to chart this week, but one of them, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, took first place with $8.66 million in rentals.

DVD Sales - Indy Re-Finds Treasure

2008-05-28

It is very rare for a box set to come out on top of the DVD sales chart, and it's even rarer for a double-dip to top the charts, but that's exactly what happened this week. Indiana Jones - The Adventure Collection led all new releases to finish on top of weekly sales chart with 510,000 units sold for $20.15 million in revenue (which is actually low for a number one release).

DVD Rentals - New Releases Go Mad

2008-05-28

Mad Money was one of three new releases to reach the top five on the rental chart this week. In fact, it led all releases with $7.33 million and should have little trouble matching its theatrical total before long.

DVD Releases for May 13, 2008

2008-05-12

The summer blockbuster season is upon us, so it's not a very good time to release a top-notch movie on DVD. There are a high number of releases, little in the way of top-notch releases. In fact, arguably the best release of the week is a Blu-ray catalogue release, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Blu-ray Edition - Buy from Amazon. And if you don't have a Blu-ray player, grab The Great Debaters 2-Disc Special Collector's Edition instead.

Spartans Too Much for Rambo

2008-01-29

We are one month into 2008 and so far there are a lot more positives than negatives at the box office. On the negative side, the box office was down 7% from last weekend to $144 million. But on the positive side, that was an increase of 21% from the same weekend last year and year-to-date 2008 has a 16% lead on 2007. Granted, it is early and it is unlikely the box office will remain this hot for long, but it is still good news.

Cloverfield Shoots for the Stars (Wars)

2008-01-22

Records fell this week as Cloverfield became the biggest film ever to debut on Martin Luther King long weekend, as well as setting a few other records (including topping Star Wars long standing January opening record). This helped the weekend bring in $155 million over three days, which was 19% more than last weekend. It was also 56% more than the same weekend last year. However, since Martin Luther King long weekend was a week earlier that isn't a fair comparison. Compared to last year's Martin Luther King long weekend, 2008 was ahead by 21% over three days and 19% over four.

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of January 18, 2008

2008-01-19

It's the busiest week of the year for new releases, which means it's the busiest week of the year for websites. However, while there is relatively high quantity, the quality is low. There are a few good sites, but there are more releases this week that are without sites and even none stand out as award-worthy.

Can Cloverfield Conquer?

2008-01-17

A 2008 release finally looks like it will win a weekend. The first two weeks of the year have brought us wins by holdovers, but the super-hyped Cloverfield should end that streak. Or it could turn into another Snakes on a Plane, I'm still not sure which way it will go.

2008 Preview: January

2008-01-01

It's the beginning of a new month, and a new year. This new beginning brings with it a sense of hope and exhilaration for many people, but this does not extend into the movie world. January is dominated by films from last year. Not only are holdovers going to overwhelm new releases at the box office for the next couple weeks, but with the award season heating up, most buzz is about who will win what. In fact, only Cloverfield seems to be able to rise above the award season buzz, but this is not a sure sign that the film will survive at the box office.
