News Stories About Leatherheads

UPDATED: DVD Sales - Man oh Man!

2008-10-12

There were not a lot of new releases to reach the top 30 on the sales chart this week, but what we lacked in quantity, we more than made up for in quality. This is because the first of the summer blockbusters reached the home market. Iron Man topped the charts with 5.12 million units sold and $93.98 million in opening week revenue. Not only is this the best opening of the year, Iron Man nearly took top spot on the yearly chart after just one week in release.

DVD Rentals - Don't Forget About Rentals

2008-10-12

New releases did better on the rental chart than they did on the sales chart with six films placing in the top 30, including Iron Man, which topped the charts generating 25% more revenue than a fellow new release, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

DVD Sales - Sexy, and Not so Sexy, New Releases

2008-10-06

New releases were plentiful on the sales chart this week, but after the new number one release, they were not that strong. That new release was Sex and the City, which sold 1.72 million units raising $38.56 million in opening week revenue.

DVD Rentals - Renting Sex

2008-10-06

Sex and the City led a group of five new releases on this week's rental chart, pulling in 25% more revenue than the second place Leatherheads.

DVD Releases for September 23, 2008 - Part II

2008-09-23

Aaaahhhhhh! POP! ... That sound you just heard was my head exploding. This week we had a new record for spotlight reviews, and with TV on DVD kicking into high gear and summer blockbusters starting to come out soon, I don't think it will slow down. (Additionally, I have close to a dozen DVDs that arrived late, and I was only able to get to less than half of them for this week. So look for another huge batch next week.) As for the quality releases, there were a few that caught my eye, but none more than The Godfather Trilogy on Blu-ray. Sure, it doesn't push the high definition format, but this is the best these films have looked in decades and any film buff will want to have them in their collection. Meanwhile, last week's release of Duckman - Season One and Two also deserves to be awarded the DVD Pick of the Week. While there are not as many releases this week as last, there are so many spotlight reviews that the list had to be split into to. Part II can be found here.

International Details - Island Scores Solid Sixth in Debut

2008-04-20

Nim's Island made its first push onto the international chart landing in sixth place with $4.53 million on 970 screens in 7 markets for a very early total of $5.64 million. The film opened in first place in Italy with $1.71 million on 304 screens while it expanded into fourth place in Australia with $780,000 on 196 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.69 million after two. The film also made its debut in France with $1.65 million on 399 screens, which was only enough for fifth place. Nim's Island is using a graduated release schedule and doesn't have a major opening for the rest of the month. On the other hand, it has major openings practically every month right through till the end of summer.

Moviegoers Crown New (Prom) King

2008-04-15

Overall the box office was marginally better than expected with practically every film beating expectations. However, no film really surpassed expectations by any great amount and the overall box office was $95 million, which was almost exactly the same as last weekend. However, it was almost 20% less than the same weekend last year and now 2008 is down more than 3% from last year's pace $2.36 billion to $2.44 billion.

Smart Money is on Prom Night becoming the King of the Weekend

2008-04-10

The latest horror remake, Prom Night, is tracking stronger than expected and should win the box office race over the weekend. However, it is the only strong release of the week and could be the only film to crack $10 million over the weekend. Conversely, this weekend last year four films hit 8 digits, and this makes it very likely that 2007 will slip further behind last year's pace.

Contest - Use Your Head, Don't Lose It - Winning Announcement

2008-04-08

The winners of our Use Your Head, Don't Lose It contest were determined and they are...

21 on a Winning Streak

2008-04-08

It was a softer than expected weekend at the box office, and expectations were no strong to begin with. Overall the box office brought in $95 million, which was down 11% from last year. More importantly, it was down a staggering 23% from the same weekend last year. Even worse, 2008 is now behind 2007's pace $2.24 billion to $2.28 billion.

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of April 4, 2008

2008-04-05

Only 11 movies on this week's list, and nearly half of them had no site for the North American release. This made it rather dull reviewing the sites this week, but it did give me a chance to waste an hour or so playing Seashell Shuffle on Nim's Island's Official Site. But despite the addictive nature of that game, the winner of the Weekly Website Award was Leatherheads - Official Site.

Head Hopes to Finish on Top

2008-04-03

April starts of with a... with a... well, it starts this week. We have three wide releases this week, but none seem destined for greatness. In fact, it's a limited release that might have the most exciting box office result of the week, even if it doesn't reach the top ten. On the other end, there should at least be a logjam at the top, giving box office watchers something to talk about.

2008 Preview: April

2008-04-01

April is not a good month to release a movie. In fact, it is one of the worst months to release a movie, especially late in the month as the May mega-releases begin to loom large on the horizon and you don't have a lot of time to pull in some cash before summer starts and the competition becomes too much to handle. There are, however, a few limited release this month that have a real shot at expanding. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? could reach $10 million, which would be amazing for a documentary, but it is doubtful it will expand wide.

Contest - Use Your Head, Don't Lose It

2008-03-28

Next Friday is the first weekend of April and the widest release of the week will be Leatherheads, a romantic comedy set in the 1920s. And what better way is there to celebrate a romantic movie than by giving away horror DVDs, more than half a dozen on them, in fact. In order to win, one must simply predict Leatherheads's three-day, opening weekend box office. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win 13: Game of Death, Wrestlemaniac, and Day of the Dead, all on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Automaton Transfussion, Wrestlemaniac, and Day of the Dead, all on DVD. Additionally, one additional entrant will be chosen at random to win the third copy of Day of the Dead on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!
