News Stories About The Brothers Bloom

DVD Rentals - Monsters and Aliens vs. The Competition

2009-10-14

As it did on the sales chart, Monsters vs. Aliens led the way on the rental chart this week, topping all new releases with relative ease.

Hurt and Revenge Rise on the Per Theater Chart

2009-06-30

The Hurt Locker did something most films about the Iraq War have not been able to do: succeed at the box office. During its opening weekend it earned close to $150,000 in just four theaters for an average of $36,338. The overall number one film, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, managed second place with an average of $25,736, and nearly double that since Wednesday. Meanwhile, last week's number one film on the per theater average, Whatever Works, landed in third with $10,280.

Staying Up on the Per Theater Chart

2009-06-09

Two new releases cracked $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, including Away We Go, which led the way with $32,603 despite mixed reviews. The overall number one film, The Hangover, was second with $13,759. Perhaps most impressive was Up, which remained in the $10,000 club during its sophomore stint with $11,561. It's rare for a saturation level release to repeat on this chart.

Up on Top of the Per Theater Chart

2009-06-02

Only one film cracked the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart, and that film was the overall box office leader, Up. It opened with $68 million in 3,766 theaters for an impressive average of $18,085.

Weekend Estimates: Up Continues Pixar Tradition

2009-05-31

Up has become the seventh Pixar out of nine to record a $50 million weekend, according to Disney's estimates released on Sunday. The new toon scored an estimated $68.2 million, which, if it holds up, will be the third-best opening for Pixar, behind The Incredibles ($70.5 million) and Finding Nemo ($70.3 million). (See complete box office history for Pixar movies.) With the summer just heating up, Disney can bank on having a $200 million hit on their hands.

It is Summertime on the Per Theater Chart

2009-05-20

L'Heure D'Ete, which literally means Summer Time, reigned on top of the Per Theater Chart this weekend with an average of $24,742 in two theaters. It was also one of five films to reach $10,000, which is a sign that summer has truly begun. Second place went to The Brothers Bloom with an average of $22,600, and that is enough to suggest some potential to expand. Angels and Demons opened in first place overall and in third place on this chart with an average of $13,100. Not Forgotten was not far behind, earning an average of $11,192 in three theaters. Finally, Star Trek managed to remain in the $10,000 club for the second weekend in a row, which is very rare for a wide release these days, earning an sophomore average of $11,149.

Weekend Estimates: Angels and Demons Makes Modest Start

2009-05-17

After a string of box office hits in recent weeks, Angels & Demons made a more modest debut over the weekend, according to studio estimates. The sequel to The Da Vinci Code opened with an estimated $48 million, almost $30 million less than its predecessor, and fell short of most predictions. While international numbers and home market sales will most likely make the movie modestly profitable in the long run, the early signs are that it might be the end of the fledgling franchise. Curiously, this weekend last year saw a similar performance from Prince Caspian, which put a temporary hold on the Narnia franchise. (Next year's release this weekend is currently Shrek Goes Fourth, by the way.)

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of May 15th, 2009

2009-05-16

Slow week in terms of movies with just four on this week's list, and only one of them is even worthy of consideration for the Weekly Website Award. That site was Angels and Demons - Official Site, which has more than enough to win.

Big List of Limited Releases

2009-05-15

No. There's not a big list of limited releases this week, but there is a limited release that is opening big. And another that could become big. And another that has the word 'Big' in its title. And that's it. Just the three films on this week's list.

2009 Preview: May

2009-05-01

Last May was strong with two films that cracked $300 million at the box office. This May we might not have any movies reach that milestone. Then again, there are six films that have a shot to reach $200 million. I'm not saying all of them will get there, but I would be surprised if at least two of them don't get there, while all six should reach at least $100 million, which is two more than the same month last year. There are also a few midlevel hits in the waiting, as a few limited releases of note. This latter category includes The Brothers Bloom, Departures, and Pontypool.

2008 Preview: December

2008-12-01

We end the year with a winning streak, one that will hopefully continue right through the New Year holiday. It seems nearly every film released this month is either an Oscar contender or a potential $100 million hit. Sometimes both. If all six films with box office potentials of $100 million or more reach that milestone, and Bolt and Four Christmases have the legs to make it there as well, we could set the record for most $100 million released in a single year. (It is currently at 29 films set in 2003.)
