DVD Releases for February 5, 2008 - Part I

2008-02-04

A big list this week with plenty releases, so many releases that we had to split the DVD Release Report into two parts. And there also includes many that are worth adding to your DVD collection. However, it is soft at the very top and there are none that jump out as obvious DVD Pick of the Week contenders. That will change next week.

It's the official start of award season as the Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced. Several films received nods, but I'm Not There and Juno were the big hits.

Clayton Gives Clooney a Great Start on the Per Theater Chart

2007-10-09

As has been the case for the past few weeks, we had a limited release with a monster start. This time it was Michael Clayton and its $700,000 opening in just 15 theaters for an average of $47,994; this bodes very well for the film's wide expansion this weekend. Second place went to the re-release of Blade Runner, which earned just under $90,000 in 2 theaters for an average of $44,575; this bodes very well for the sales of the Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition, which comes out this December on DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD. Last week's winner, The Darjeeling Limited, showed strong resilience in the face of expansion, earning an average of $29,559 during its first full weekend. The same can be said of Lust, Caution as the film went from a single theater to 17 while averaging $21,342. Finally, Finishing the Game was a surprise entrant into the $10,000 club with $11,903 in its lone theater.

Promise Kept on Per Theater Chart

2007-09-18

While no wide release cracked $5000 on the per theater chart, three limited released topped $10,000, two by massive margins. This was led by possible Oscar contender, Eastern Promises, which pulled in an impressive $550,000 in 15 theaters for an average of $36,473. Meanwhile, Across the Universe opened in more theaters, 23, but to a smaller average, $29,034. Finally, In the Valley of Elah managed an average of $14,840 in 9.

Getting What You Want on the Per Theater Chart

2007-09-11

Again we only saw one film able to crack $10,000 over the weekend as I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With scored $12,317 over the weekend and $15,990 since Wednesday, all in one theater.

$10,000 Club is Shallow this Week

2007-08-28

Deep Water was the only film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart after opening with $22,632 in two theaters for an average of $11,316.

Two Tops on Per Theater Chart

2007-08-14

2 Days in Paris was number one on the per theater chart with an average of $17,364 in its 10 theaters. This suggests a strong possibility it will expand and it should earn at least some measure of mainstream success. The overall box office leader, Rush Hour 3, was the only other film to top $10,000 as it grabbed an average of $12,996.

The Weekend is 3 Days for Limited Releases

2007-08-10

The selection of limited releases is more limited this week, but there are still a couple that could reach out to mainstream audiences. However, both 2 Days in Paris and Rocket Science have uphill battles ahead of them.

Movie Website Updates for July 8 - July 14, 2007

2007-07-14

One of the last summer blockbusters launched its full site this week. This means two things, The Bourne Ultimatum - Official Site is the clear winner of the weekly website award. And secondly, there will likely be a slowdown in top-notch sites as we approach the dog days of summer, and the even worse days of September.
