With our annual Oscar Prediction contest under way, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we will look at Best Writing - Original Screenplay and Best Writing - Adapted Screenplay.

One of the longest lists in a while this week, but there's a lack of quality at the top. There are a number that are of interest, like Zodiac on Blu-ray, The Bourne Trilogy on Blu-ray, and others, none rise to the level of DVD Pick of the Week. For a year without an obvious front-runner for the Oscar race, there were not a whole lot of surprises when it came to the nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominations today and leading the way was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with thirteen while Slumdog Millionaire was second with ten.

The Golden Globe bounce wasn't exactly overwhelming after the winners were announced, but many of the winners have been in theaters too long to really benefit from the added publicity.

The first of the major awards ceremonies were held last night as the Hollywood Foreign Press handed out the 66th annual Golden Globes awards. There were very few films that earned more than one award, but the big winner was Slumdog Millionaire with four wins. It is instantly an Oscar favorite.

The latest set of Awards Season nominations were handed out today as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations. There was not much in the way of surprises, and it is hard to look at one film and say it was the big winner, but Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button come the closest.

There were only five new releases to chart this week, but three of them occupied the top three spots. That included 10,000 B.C., which opened with 892,000 units sold and $15.54 million in revenue.

There was a sharp drop-off in the number of releases this week, but while the numbers were down overall, there were several releases that I can enthusiastically recommend: Charlie Bartlett - Buy from Amazon, Definitely, Maybe - Buy from Amazon, Futurama - The Beast with a Billion Backs - Buy from Amazon, The Hammer - Buy from Amazon, and In Bruges - Buy from Amazon. However, while all those movies, and a few others, are worth picking up, the best of the best is Persepolis and either the DVD or the Blu-ray is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian opened in second place on the international charts with $23.31 million on 3037 screens in 12 markets giving it the best per screen average on this week's list. The film only opened in three major markets, but it finished first in all of them. This includes Russia where it managed $6.73 million on 735 screens and Mexico where it earned $6.27 million on 842 and in both cases it opened significantly higher than the original. On the other hand, while it managed first place in South Korea, its opening of $3.42 million on 670 screens over the weekend and a total of $3.90 million is significantly lower than the originals opening of $3.94 million on 262 screens over three days and $5.22 million in total. Next up for the film is its debut in Japan this weekend, while it has major openings all the way till late August.

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, a.k.a. Welcome to the Sticks, remained in first place in France with $4.79 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $175.67 million after 8. However, it fell out of the top five internationally with $5.33 million on 963 screens in 4 markets for a total of $187.13 million. In its native market, the film has ticket sales of 19.25 million putting it about three weeks away from topping Titanic's record of 20.64 million while it is closing in on $200 million internationally. Both of those are amazing records, and the film is hardly showing signs of slowing down.

There were only two films to top $10,000 on the Per Theater Chart this week>. The first was the re-release of Contempt with $14,826. Next was the overall box office leader, Horton Hears a Who, which opened with an average of $11,384.

No Country For Old Men slipped out of the top five but still added $7.07 million on 1881 screens in 47 markets for a total of $60.56 million. It is on track to top its domestic box office shortly, which would give it $150 million worldwide.

Paranoid Park opened in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $14,914. The only other film to cross $10,000 was the overall box office leader, 10,000 B.C., with an average of $10,518.

The Counterfeiters was the only film to cross $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, pulling in $185,000 in 18 theaters for an average or $10,295. One must assume its Oscar Win boosted its box office this weekend.

The Duchess of Langeais was the number one film on the per theater chart this week, earning an average of $11,126 in two theaters while Oscar-winner The Counterfeiters earned an average of $10,939 in 8 theaters.

Jodhaa Akbar opened on top of the per theater averages chart with an estimated $1.3 million opening 100 theaters. The only other member of the $10,000 club was U2 3D with an average of $10,198 during its fourth week of release.

Three films earned per theater averages better than $10,000 this weekend. Two of those were the same 3D concert releases that topped the charts last week. However, the number one film this week was In Bruges with a very healthy average of $16,330 in 28 theaters. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour did suffer a sophomore slump, but earned an average of $14,987, which is more than enough to keep theater owners happy. Finally, U2 3D was up more than 3% to $12,094, which bodes very well for the film's upcoming expansion.

Not much competition for the Weekly Website Award as only one site truly stood out as above average. That site was for Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins - Official Site, and won thanks to a combination of regular features, video clips, and games.

Ten limited releases this week, including... two opening in 100 theaters or more, two opening in one theater each, two Canadian films, two starring Joel Moore, two earning perfect reviews, and two others earning 10% positive, or less. (There is some overlap in that list.) Needless to say, with such a wide selection, there should be something for everyone.
