The new releases overwhelmed the sales chart this week taking the top four places, and six of the top ten, and nine of the top thirty. This includes the new number one film, Pineapple Express, which opened in first place with 1.48 million units sold and $31.39 million in revenue.

The new year starts off like most on the home market, rather weak. There are few first run releases coming out this week, most of which are terrible. We do have one top-notch release though, Duckman - Season Three and Four, which is clearly the DVD Pick of the Week.

Public Enemy Number One Part 1 opened in first place in France with $5.66 million on 489 screens. Adding in a couple of smaller markets and it pulled in $5.80 million on 527 screens in 3 markets over the weekend, landing in sixth place internationally.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona remained in sixth place internationally with $6.66 million on 1136 screens in 11 markets for a total of $22.85 million after a month of release. This includes France, where the film remained in first place with $3.15 million on 443 screens for the week and $7.68 million after two. Meanwhile, it opened in Italy with $2.16 million on 378 screens, which was enough for second place in that market.

First some updates on Wednesday's numbers. Due to Columbus Day, we were relying on studio estimates instead of final numbers, and while they were mostly accurate, they were not entirely accurate. The Russia film, Admiral (Koltchak), did indeed top the charts with $12.51 million on 1,223 screens in 2 markets over the weekend and $13.31 million in total. Meanwhile, Eagle Eye added $10.88 million on 3,030 screens in 38 markets for a still early total of $29.41 million. Mamma Mia! continues its quest for $400 million with $8.37 million on 3,713 screens in 46 markets for a total of $390.72 million. German Unification Day helped The Baader Meinhof Complex grow by 10% as it remained in second place in Germany with $4.82 million on 594 screens for a total of $10.99 million after two weeks. Adding in two smaller markets and the film made $5.35 million on 660 screens in 3 markets for a total of $12.06 million.

Mamma Mia! remained in top spot on the international chart with a nearly identical result to last week, earning $15.62 million on 4,152 screens in 44 markets for a total of $356.63 million internationally and $498.82 million worldwide. This includes an estimated $4.3 million on 436 screens in Russia, which was easily enough for first place. The film is also still cruising in the U.K. adding $1.10 million on 418 screens for a total of $113.40 million after nearly three months of release. At this point, one has to assume that Titanic's record is not out of reach, and that the studio might be willing to give it the extra push to put it over the top.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor fell more than 50% this past weekend down to $4.24 million on 2905 screens in 46 markets for a total of $276.19 million internationally. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but added $1.36 million on 361 screens during its second weekend in Australia for a total of $5.13 million.

It was not a good weekend at the box office with just one of the four new releases beating expectations, and even then it was by just a rounding error. Overall box office receipts were $88 million over the weekend, which was down 13% from last week. More importantly, it was down 9% from the same weekend last year, which was not expected. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind 2007, but at a margin of just $6.98 billion to $7.04 billion, and a strong fall and holiday box office would be enough to catch up.

Another week, another four wide releases... well, three and a half, as one of them is opening in fewer than 2,000 theaters, which is normally the level I consider truly wide versus semi-wide. It is unlikely that this week's crop of new releases will be as strong as last week's, and while the top of the chart won't live up to the level earned by last year's victor, Resident Evil: Extinction, the overall box office should still show some growth.

Four films opened wide this weekend, and all four finished in the top four, which is the first time that's happened in more than a year and a half. The strength of the new releases helped the overall box office bounce back, as it was up 49% from last weekend at $101 million. More importantly, it was up more than 28% from the same weekend last year, which ended a seven-week losing streak. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind, but the gap was closed somewhat with 2007 leading with $6.92 billion to $6.87 billion.

The Coen Brothers claimed top spot at the box office this weekend as Burn After Reading led four wide releases at the top of the chart.
The comedy thriller earned a solid $19.4 million, according to Focus' estimate, which put it safely ahead of Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys, which scored an estimated $18.02 million.
Righteous Kill also performed decently, with $16.5 million, while The Women was softer with $10.1 million.

September is the month to release films that studios have no real faith in. Since they have no real faith in these projects, it comes as no surprise that the best of the websites, Righteous Kill - Official Site, doesn't really stand out enough to be worthy of the Weekly Website Award.

There are four wide releases this week, and the odds are that all four will place in the top four on the chart. However, there are some disagreements among analysts on which films have a shot at topping the chart, and which will struggle. But (almost) everyone agrees that the overall box office will grow from last weekend, and most agree it will grow from the same weekend last year.

Tough week to pick the target film for the weekly box office prediction contest, as there are four wide releases, but none of them seem likely to be the new number one film, but it is almost guaranteed that one of them will be. So I'm going with the widest release, which should be Righteous Kill, but it might not be. Regardless which film does open widest, Righteous Kill is the target film and in order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Righteous Kill.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Street Kings on DVD, Deal on DVD, and Lobster Tale on DVD.

A pretty bland month with no wide release that look likely to surprise, either becoming a potential $100 million hit, or bombing so bad that they fail even to reach $10 million. The latter is a lot more likely, however, with a number of films that have serious obstacles to overcome, and it is very unlikely all of them will avoid bombing. On the other end of the scale, there are no films that have a legitimate shot at $100 million, while The top film of the month could make less than $70 million.
