Again, there's only one saturation level release next week, 17 Again, which makes it easy to pick the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of 17 Again.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Kung Fu Panda - Secrets of the Furious Five on DVD, as well as House on DVD.

The last of the winter releases are trickling on to the home market; however, we are at the tale end of the hits and are getting the near misses now, which leaves a void in major hits at the top. I do like Deadliest Catch - Season 4, but I can't rate a featureless DVD as the DVD Pick of the Week. So that honor goes to Doubt, which is worth buying on DVD or Blu-ray. But I would go with the latter. As has become customary, this week's list has to be split into two, with the second part found here.

This week the leader on the per theater chart was also the leader of the overall box office chart as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa opened with a very impressive average of $15,559 in more than 4,000 theaters. Second place went to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, which opened with $250,000 in 17 theaters for an average of $14,887, suggesting at least some potential to expand. The Alphabet Killer was a surprise entry in the $10,000 club, as it earned $11,000 in its lone theater in Rochester, New York. Likewise, JCVD made an impressive debut with just over $20,000 in 2 theaters for an average of $10,060.

It was a big weekend for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Not only is it going to win the box office race, but its Official Site won the Weekly Website Award.

It is about month before the first wave of Awards Season nominations are announced, and we are still waiting for the first major player to arise. We've seen more than a few potential contenders come and go, but none have earned the critical buzz necessary to have much of a chance to take home the hardware. This week another such film is being released. Strangely, while it is the weekend after Halloween, there are also a few horror films opening in limited release.
