The Christmas shopping season starts early this year, as it seems to do every year. Only 15 days into September we have the first summer blockbuster of the year coming out. While X-Men Origins - Wolverine will easily be the biggest release of the week, it won't be the best. I think the best selections out there are from the TV on DVD categories, which is common this time of year, and I would rank Sanctuary - Season One and Transformers - Season Two - Volume One as the best of the best and both are my DVD Picks of the Week. There are a large number of spotlight reviews, including a trio that arrived late, so the list had to be split into two. The second part can be found here.

The Hurt Locker did something most films about the Iraq War have not been able to do: succeed at the box office.
During its opening weekend it earned close to $150,000 in just four theaters for an average of $36,338.
The overall number one film, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, managed second place with an average of $25,736, and nearly double that since Wednesday.
Meanwhile, last week's number one film on the per theater average, Whatever Works, landed in third with $10,280.

There were half-a-dozen films that managed to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart, led by Food, Inc. with an impressive average of $20,171 in three theaters.
This suggests at least some potential for expansion.
Moon opened in a few more theaters while its average was slightly below at $17,006, but this is also enough to suggest some potential for expansion.
Tetro opened on Thursday and earned nearly $40,000 over 4 days, but over the three-day weekend it managed an average of $16,221.
Away We Go expanded from 4 to 45 theaters, but still earned an average of $12,463, and this is very good news indeed. Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love opened with an average of $10,866 in three theaters while Le Combat Dans l'Ile opened with $10,217 in one.
The overall box office champion, The Hangover, came awfully close to the $10,000 mark with an average of $9,775.

The top two films on the overall chart were also the top two films on the per theater chart with Night at the Museum 2 earning an average of $13,226 while Terminator Salvation pulled in $12,056. Easy Virtue got off to a faster-than-expected start with an average $11,044, and this suggests some ability to expand.

For the first time in a long time, we have two wide releases battling for top spot on the weekend box office. I thought this would encourage competition on the websites, but Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian's Official Site was clearly the best of the week.

Another week that's not exactly busy when it comes to limited releases. There is a lot of variety, on the other hand, with a documentary, a costume drama, a foreign language flick, and a film starring a real-life porn star making her mainstream movie debut. Should be something for nearly everyone.
