News Stories About Race to Witch Mountain

DVD Sales - Consumers Love Seventeen

2009-08-26

New releases were able to take the top two spots on the sales chart this week, but this was more due to weakness in the overall numbers rather than strength of the new releases. The number one film was 17 Again with $12.03 million from 679,000 units. This was just ahead of I Love You, Man with 676,000 units sold generating $11.00 million in sales.

DVD Rentals - People Like You, Man

2009-08-26

The same two new releases that led the way on the sales chart this week led the way on the rental chart. However, they finished in the opposite direction with I Love You, Man generating 50% more revenue than 17 Again.

DVD Sales - Witch Wins Race

2009-08-18

There were only five new releases to chart this week, but three of those reached the top five. This includes Race to Witch Mountain, which sold 763,000 units earning $13.35 million during its first week on the home market.

DVD Rentals - Obsessed with the Race for First Place

2009-08-18

The same two new releases that took the top two spots on the sales chart this week were also able to take the top two spots on the rental chart as well, but in the other order. Obsessed came out on top with 27% more rentals than Race to Witch Mountain, but it is common for kids movies to do better on the sales chart than the rental chart.

Contest - Another Alien Adventure

2009-08-07

What's with the alien movies lately? Not only is the widest release of next week and the target film for this week, District 9, an alien film, but we feature another alien film among our prizes. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of District 9. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Race to Witch Mountain on Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of SpongeBoB SquarePants - To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants on DVD and Ni Hao Kai-Lan - Great Trip to China! on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

DVD Releases for August 4th, 2009

2009-08-03

A rather slow week for new releases with very few real first run releases that stand out. The best releases on this week's list are Dollhouse - Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, as well as Watchmen - Three-Disc Director's Cut Blu-ray, but both of those came out in weeks past and are on this list because the screener arrived late. The best from this week is Flight of the Conchords - Season Two, which is the DVD Pick of the Week. However, if you are Canadian, you have to grab Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy on DVD; it's your patriotic duty.

DVD Releases for July 28th, 2009 - Part I

2009-07-28

We are starting to see the flood of TV on DVD releases that hit the home market this time every year. It makes sense: after all, what better time to release the previous season on DVD than just before the next season starts? Three such releases, The Middleman - The Complete Series, Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series - Blu-ray Box Set, and Dollhouse - Season One - on DVD or Blu-ray are in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. The Battlestar Galactica release is a tad too expensive for most people, while I am unsure of the exact nature of the extras on Dollhouse. That leaves The Middleman - The Complete Series as the DVD Pick of the Week, for the second week in a row. With the increasing number of TV on DVD releases, the list is large enough that it has to be split into two parts with part two found here.

International Details - Hannah Strikes a Chord

2009-05-10

We've entered the summer schedule and this year there will be a small change. Instead of dealing with just the films that have reached $1 million or more on the international chart, we will be dealing with just the films that have reached $2 million or more. The reason for this change is simple; with the rise of many midlevel markets, reaching $1 million is just not that big of a feat anymore. The best of the rest of this week's selection was Hannah Montana the Movie, which placed a healthy second with $6.95 million on 1300 screens in 13 markets for a very early total of $8.96 million. This includes second place openings in the U.K. with $3.03 million on 415 screens in the U.K., which was as expected, and $1.44 million on 346 screens over the weekend in Italy and $1.64 million in total, which was better than expected. Also, it is about a week away from topping $1 million in Poland after earning $124,000 on 105 screens over the weekend giving it $932,000 after three. Combined with the nearly $75 million the movie has earned domestically, and this film is very, very close to showing a profit before the lucrative home market.

International Details - Blame it On Rio

2009-05-03

OSS 117: Rio Ne Repond Plus slipped a spot to sixth with $4.74 million on 642 screens in 3 markets for a total of $15.15 million. Almost all of this came from France, where it repeated on top with $4.03 million on 602 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.83 million after two.

International Details - Japan Rising Sun on International Chart

2009-04-26

Japan was a major player on the international charts this past weekend, placing three films in the top 30, and helping a couple others as well. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser placed first in its native market, and sixth internationally, with $6.00 million on 341 screens.

International Details - Unknown Success

2009-04-19

Knowing was able to sneak into third place, despite earlier reports to the contrary. Over the past weekend it earned $13.35 million on 2943 screens in 24 markets for a total of $47.80 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, but most of the growth came from two major markets: Germany and Spain. In the former it made $1.47 million on 440 screens, while in the latter it made a more impressive $2.35 million on 330 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.11 million. As far as holdovers are concerned, the film held steady in France down just 16% to $3.06 million on 348 screens, but that was for the full week. After two weeks the film now has $6.72 million in that market.

International Details - Marley Nears Century Mark

2009-04-12

Marley & Me fell to sixth place, but it is nearing $100 million internationally. This past weekend it added $5.97 million on 2860 screens in 33 markets for a total of $83.34 million. The film opened in second place in Italy with $2.00 million on 348 screens, which is on par with expectations. Meanwhile, it added $1.23 million on 464 screens in the U.K. for a total of $18.41 million after four weeks while it made $1.01 million on 439 screens in Japan for a total of $5.17 million after two. It is still aiming at $100 million internationally, but it could be close.

International Details - Duplicity Doubles

2009-04-05

Duplicity doubled its international haul over the weekend landing in sixth place with $6.47 million on 1811 screens in 20 markets for a total of $12.21 million. The film opened in fourth place in France with $2.01 million on 380 screens, while it managed fourth in Russia as well, but with a much weaker $873,000 on 265 screens. It did hold on better than most in the U.K. down just 31% to $775,000 on 355 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.68 million after two.

In the Know

2009-03-24

It was a relatively predictable weekend at the box office with all five films finishing in the right order and within an acceptable margin of error. The main difference was the top three films were more spread out than expected, which gave Knowing a much easier win. Overall, the box office pulled in $105 million, which was 4.5% higher than last weekend, but as expected, it was 6.6% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has pulled in $2.20 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace.

International Details - Shopaholic Selling Well

2009-03-22

Confessions Of A Shopaholic nearly doubled its weekend haul as it pulled in $6.78 million on 2023 screens in 26 markets for a total of $31.91 million after a month of release. The film opened in first place in Australia, no surprise there, as that's the home of Isla Fisher, with $1.89 million on 309 screens. It earned a nearly identical result of $1.84 million on 426 screens in Germany, but that was only enough for third place in that market. Next up for the film is South Korea and Spain at the end of this month, while it doesn't end its run till the end of May when it opens in Japan and France.

Who Knows Who Will Win at the Box Office?

2009-03-19

There could be quite a race for top spot on top of the weekend box office with all three wide releases with a shot at coming out on top. Knowing, I Love You, Man, and Duplicity all have their strengths, and weaknesses, and this has led to analysts being divided on which movie will win. They are less divided on the chances they will keep up with last year's number one film, and it appears it will be another losing weekend for 2009. However, that should change next weekend.

Contest - Running Strong - Winning Announcement

2009-03-18

The winners of our Running Strong contest were determined and they are...

Witch Wins the Race, but Box Office Slows Down

2009-03-17

For the first time in a long time, 2009 showed signs of weakness at the box office as all three new releases were unable to match expectations. Overall the box office was down 14% from last weekend to $101 million. More troubling was the fact that is was down 16% from the same weekend last year. However, to be fair, this weekend last year saw the debut of Horton Hears a Who, which was the biggest hit of 2008 at that point and opened with $45 million.

Weekend Estimates: Witch Mountain Opens with $25 Million, Watchmen Struggles

2009-03-15

Disney remake Race to Witch Mountain made a solid debut over the weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning. The adventure movie picked up about $25 million, enough for a comfortable first place. Watchmen, which was widely tipped to earn a second weekend on top, dropped 67% to $18.07 million, not far ahead of Universal remake Last House on the Left, which earned a decent $14.86 million opening.

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of March 13th, 2009

2009-03-14

After several weeks without much in terms of Award-worthy sites, we have two sites this week that are both worthy of the award: The Last House on the Left's Official Site and Race to Witch Mountain's Official Site. The former has better design, the latter has better interactive features. Both should sell the movie to their respective audiences, and both are recipients of the Weekly Website Award.

Will Watchmen Win the Race to the Top?

2009-03-13

There are some who think there will be a close race for first place on the box office chart this weekend with Watchmen having a shot at repeating on top ahead of Race to Witch Mountain. I am not one of those people. After bowing to the majority two weeks in a row, I think Watchmen will see a bigger than expected drop-off, while Race to Witch Mountain will open with a larger than expected box office. On a related note, 2009's winning streak over 2008 could come to an end, as this weekend last year saw the debut of Horton Hears a Who, which opened with $45 million. That's more than the consensus prediction for the top film over this weekend. In fact, it could be more than the three new releases will earn combined.

Contest - Running Strong

2009-03-06

The is only one saturation level release next week, Race to Witch Mountain, and it is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Race to Witch Mountain. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of The Hills - Season Four on DVD, as well as Soul Men on DVD and Hulk Vs. on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of The Hills - Season Four on DVD, as well as Miracle at St. Anna on DVD. Finally, one additional entrant will be chosen at random to win a third copy of The Hills - Season Four on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

2009 Preview: March

2009-03-01

2009 got off to such a great start that I didn't think February would continue winning, but so far that has proven to be the case, for the most part. Now March has a great chance of continuing that run with several big hits, including three potential $100 million movies. At the beginning of the year, I didn't think there would be so many hits in March, but a high tide lifts all boats, and the more people see movies, the more trailers they see in theaters, and the more likely they are to watch the upcoming movies.
