News Stories About I Love You, Man

DVD Rentals - Duplicity Earns an Honest Win on the Rental Chart

2009-09-09

There were five new release to reach the top 30 on the rental chart this week, led by a pair that took the top two spots. Duplicity came out ahead with roughly 40% more rentals than Fighting, which opened in second place.

DVD Sales - Hannah Dominates DVD Sales

2009-09-01

There were eight new releases to reach the top 30 on the sales chart this week, and one of them dominated the chart. The big winner was Hannah Montana the Movie, as the Tween Queen opened in first place after selling 1.23 million units and generating $20.59 million in opening week consumer spending at retail.

DVD Rentals - Last Starts in First Place

2009-09-01

There were only half as many new releases to reach the top 30 on the rental chart this week as there were on the sales chart, but we still had a new number one. The Last House on the Left opened in first place with nearly 50% more rentals that I Love You, Man.

DVD Sales - Consumers Love Seventeen

2009-08-26

New releases were able to take the top two spots on the sales chart this week, but this was more due to weakness in the overall numbers rather than strength of the new releases. The number one film was 17 Again with $12.03 million from 679,000 units. This was just ahead of I Love You, Man with 676,000 units sold generating $11.00 million in sales.

DVD Rentals - People Like You, Man

2009-08-26

The same two new releases that led the way on the sales chart this week led the way on the rental chart. However, they finished in the opposite direction with I Love You, Man generating 50% more revenue than 17 Again.

DVD Releases for August 11th, 2009 - Part I

2009-08-11

It was a hard slog to get through the spotlight reviews this week. I live in Abbotsford, and this was the weekend of the Abbotsford Air Show and the constant stream of jets flying overhead made it nearly impossible to watch movies at times. (Do you know how loud you have to be to drown out Cutthroat Island?) As for this week's list of home market releases, there are a number that are worth picking up, but none that are must haves, and none rise to the level of DVD Pick of the Week. However, while there are no DVD Picks of the Week, there are enough reviews that the list had to be split into two with the second part found here.

International Details - Blame it On Rio

2009-05-03

OSS 117: Rio Ne Repond Plus slipped a spot to sixth with $4.74 million on 642 screens in 3 markets for a total of $15.15 million. Almost all of this came from France, where it repeated on top with $4.03 million on 602 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.83 million after two.

International Details - Japan Rising Sun on International Chart

2009-04-26

Japan was a major player on the international charts this past weekend, placing three films in the top 30, and helping a couple others as well. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser placed first in its native market, and sixth internationally, with $6.00 million on 341 screens.

Zero to Seventy is Three Days

2009-04-07

Fast and Furious broke records over the weekend and helped take the overall box office to $155 million. That's 6% more than last weekend, and 62% than the same weekend last year. Stunning. Overall, 2009 has managed $2.57 billion, which is 14% ahead of last year's pace.

Fast Start or Furious Filmmakers?

2009-04-02

April starts off with what could be one of the biggest openings of the year, as well as one of the best reviewed movies of the year. Sadly, these are two separate movies. Even if the top film misses expectations, it should still earn more than the combined total of last year's set of wide releases, and help 2009 maintain its record setting pace.

Monsters Take Down All Competition

2009-03-31

It was an amazing weekend at the box office as all six films on this list beat expectations. Granted, some times that was by the smallest of margins, but after two down weeks in a row we will take all the good news we can. Speaking of good news, the overall box office shot up by 39% from last weekend to $146 million. More importantly, that was 38% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has now pulled in $2.38 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace. With April of '08 starting slowly, we have a great chance to extend the lead this coming weekend.

Weekend Estimates: Monsters vs. Aliens Has Biggest Weekend of 2009

2009-03-29

Monsters vs. Aliens got off to a great start over the weekend, according to Paramount's Sunday estimate. The 3D movie earned an impressive $58.2 million, the best weekend of the year so far, and above even our bullish prediction. Unless the final numbers are considerably lower, Monsters vs. Aliens will end up the third biggest opener in March (see complete list).

Monsters vs. Everyone Else

2009-03-26

It's a one-horse race for top spot at the box office with Monsters vs. Aliens being that one horse. However, while there's no real race for the top this weekend, it will be interesting to see if the film can top last year's big spring release, Horton Hears a Who. Or if it can top The Watchmen for best opening weekend of the year. Or, most importantly, if it can help 2009 regain its winning ways over 2008. That shouldn't be too hard, as this week last year wasn't particularly strong.

In the Know

2009-03-24

It was a relatively predictable weekend at the box office with all five films finishing in the right order and within an acceptable margin of error. The main difference was the top three films were more spread out than expected, which gave Knowing a much easier win. Overall, the box office pulled in $105 million, which was 4.5% higher than last weekend, but as expected, it was 6.6% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has pulled in $2.20 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace.

Weekend Estimates: Knowing Wins Weekend Face-Off

2009-03-22

A fascinating box office face-off ended in a good win for Knowing over the weekend as the Nicolas Cage thriller earned $24.814 million, according to Summit's Sunday estimate, and topped the latest from Paul Rudd and Julia Roberts. Rudd's comedy, I Love You, Man did a decent $18 million, while Roberts' Duplicity was a little more disappointing with an estimated $14.4 million.

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of March 20th, 2009

2009-03-21

If I were to use just one word to describe the sites on this week's list, that would would be 'solid'. Most of the sites on this list have all of the usual features, while a few has some minor extras. But none have what it takes to be the winner of the Weekly Website Award.

Who Knows Who Will Win at the Box Office?

2009-03-19

There could be quite a race for top spot on top of the weekend box office with all three wide releases with a shot at coming out on top. Knowing, I Love You, Man, and Duplicity all have their strengths, and weaknesses, and this has led to analysts being divided on which movie will win. They are less divided on the chances they will keep up with last year's number one film, and it appears it will be another losing weekend for 2009. However, that should change next weekend.

2009 Preview: March

2009-03-01

2009 got off to such a great start that I didn't think February would continue winning, but so far that has proven to be the case, for the most part. Now March has a great chance of continuing that run with several big hits, including three potential $100 million movies. At the beginning of the year, I didn't think there would be so many hits in March, but a high tide lifts all boats, and the more people see movies, the more trailers they see in theaters, and the more likely they are to watch the upcoming movies.
