News Stories About The Wackness

DVD Rentals - New Releases Dominate First Full Week of New Year

2009-01-19

New releases took the top four spots on the rental chart this week, just as they did on the sales chart, and they did it mostly in the same order. Pineapple Express led the way with about 16% more rentals than second place Righteous Kill.

DVD Releases for January 6, 2009

2009-01-06

The new year starts off like most on the home market, rather weak. There are few first run releases coming out this week, most of which are terrible. We do have one top-notch release though, Duckman - Season Three and Four, which is clearly the DVD Pick of the Week.

Contest - New Year, Old Movie

2008-12-26

It's the beginning of the year, and as is costumary on the first weekend of each year, there are no new releases, which makes the process of choosing a target film a little more difficult. Also, we don't have box office information for Christmas day, so we are not exactly sure which film will top the charts this weekend, and therefore will likely top the charts next weekend. It should come down to either Bedtime Stories or Marley & Me. And our target film is ... (flips a coin) Marley & Me. In order to win, one must simply predict the upcoming weekend box office of Marley & Me. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's upcoming 3-day weekend box office (Friday, January 2nd to Sunday, January 4th), without going over, will win The Wackness on DVD and in paperback. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's upcoming 3-day weekend box office (Friday, January 2nd to Sunday, January 4th), without going under, will win Eagle Eye Special Edition DVD and Conspiracy on DVD Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

Awards Season - Ballast, River, and Rachel Getting Nominations

2008-12-02

It's the official start of award season as the Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced today. At first glance, no one film jumps out as the big player, but Frozen River did manage to pull in seven nods, while Rachel Getting Married and Ballast earned six each.

Has Awards Season Started?

2008-09-23

The Duchess was a fashionable choice for moviegoers over the weekend, as it made just under $200,000 in just 7 theaters for an average of $27,204, which was the clear winner. The reviews were not great, but the film still has a shot at being nominated for several technical Oscars. Appaloosa was the biggest limited release of the week, pulling in just shy of $250,000 in 14 theaters to give it an impressive average of $17,775. Next up was August Evening with $11,033, while the final film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart was Walking on Dead Fish with $10,524 in one theater.

Wire Towers Higher than Bat

2008-07-29

Man on Wire topped the per theater chart this week by pulling in an impressive average of $25,696 in two theaters. This was ahead of the overall box office leader, The Dark Knight, which earned an average of $17,216 in more than 4,000 theaters. Transsiberian also repeated in the $10,000 club, down roughly 23% to $13,280. Brideshead Revisited opened in 22 theaters, which is a lot of a limited release, but still managed an average of $10,291 during its opening weekend, which bodes well for its prospects at expansion. The final film to reach $10,000 did so by the narrowest of narrow margins as Step Brothers topped that milestone by less than 24 cents.

Per Theater Chart goes a Little Wacky

2008-07-08

The Wackness opened in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $23,067. But I'm going to wait to see how well it expands before judging its chances of becoming this year's sleeper hit. After all, so many limited releases have failed to make it there this year. Second place went to fellow limited release, Tell No One, which opened with an estimated average of $21,250 in 8 theaters. The overall box office leader, Hancock, was the only other new release to top $10,000 on the per theater chart -- it earned an average of $15,789.

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of July 4, 2008

2008-07-06

There were a couple of sites that were in contention for the Weekly Website Award, including one of the limited releases. It is not that common for a limited release to have a top notch site, because the advertising budget tends to be as limited as its screen count. However, while The Wackness' Official Site stood out from the crowd, Hancock's Official Site was deemed the best of the week.

Limited Releases go Kabluey

2008-07-04

The long weekend didn't result in a long list of limited releases. That said, there are a few releases that have a shot at succeeding in limited release, even if I wouldn't be willing to wager any of them will escape to the multiplexes.

Contest - O Canada

2008-06-26

It's Canada Day on Tuesday so we are having a Canadian themed Weekly Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Hancock, which opens on the Wednesday, but we are only interested in the Friday to Sunday number. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a Canada Day prize pack consisting of 2112 by Rush, which coincidentally is how much I weight. (It's actually 211.2 pounds. Although if I can keep up with my diet, I might be able to get down to Moving Pictures by my birthday, perhaps even A Farewell to Kings.) In addition to those three CDs, they will win the greatest Canadian movie of all time, Strange Brew on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of 2112, Moving Pictures, and A Farewell to Kings by Rush, as well as Strange Brew on DVD. Finally, whoever comes closest regardless if they went over or under will win a The Wackness prize pack consisting of a T-shirt, CD Soundtrack and signed poster. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!
