A rather slow week for new releases with very few real first run releases that stand out. The best releases on this week's list are Dollhouse - Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, as well as Watchmen - Three-Disc Director's Cut Blu-ray, but both of those came out in weeks past and are on this list because the screener arrived late. The best from this week is Flight of the Conchords - Season Two, which is the DVD Pick of the Week. However, if you are Canadian, you have to grab Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy on DVD; it's your patriotic duty.

New releases were not as plentiful on the rental charts as they were on the sales chart this week, but we still had a new number one as What Happens in Vegas... generated about 35% more than last week's number one rental, Street Kings.

2008-08-26
TV on DVD is starting to dominate the weekly DVD releases, including the top tier releases. In fact, four of the top five picks for the week are TV on DVD. However, while Heroes - Blu-ray - Season One & Season Two, NCIS - The Fifth Season, and The Shield - The Complete Season Six are all easily contenders for the crown, Nightmare Before Christmas - Collector's Edition on DVD or Blu-ray is the DVD Pick of the Week. Tell No One showed strength during its expansion, which helped it take first place on the per theater chart with an average of $13,088 in 19 theaters. The overall box office leader, Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army, was the only other film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart with an average of $10,780.

There are a trio of wide releases this week, each of which has a site filled with clips, games, and more. However, while all three are better than average, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army - Official Site is clearly the best and the winner of the Weekly Website Award.

There are eight limited releases opening this week, only one of which is earning overall positive reviews. And that film, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, has already debuted on TV, which further complicates its box office chances. This could result in a week without a single strong release on the per theater chart.
