It's coming very close to Halloween, which means there are a lot of horror films on this week's list. However, much of these films are of the smaller variety, like Night of the Creeps. Looking at the best of the releases, there are two that jump out at me, both Blu-ray releases. Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure on Blu-ray and The Prisoner - The Complete Series on Blu-ray are both DVD Pick of the Week.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past led all new releases topping the rental chart this week with more than twice the number of rentals as X-Men Origins - Wolverine managed.

2009-09-29
There were not as many new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's rental chart as there were on the sales chart, but the same film topped both. X-Men Origins - Wolverine earned first place with more than 2.5 times as many rentals as State of Play, which was pushed into second place after two weeks on top.

This week there are not that many releases on this week's list, but there a few releases at the very top that are worthy of being the DVD Pick of the Week. Monsters vs. Aliens is certainly in that list, but until the DVD and Blu-ray shows up, I can't confirm if it's a DVD Pick of the Week of merely a must buy. Wizard of Oz - 70th Anniversary Edition on either DVD or Blu-ray Gift-set is DVD Pick of the Week material.

It's the week before we get the sales numbers of the first of the summer blockbuster that hit the home market, so it comes as little surprise that the overall sales are weak this week. There were six new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart, including earning three of the top four spots, but it was a case of quantity above quality. The Office - Season Five was the lone bright spot, as the TV on DVD release captured first place with 407,000 units sold and a very impressive opening week sales of $13.91 million.

2009-09-26
State of Play remained on top of the rental chart this week with roughly 20% more rentals than Crank 2 - High Voltage, which was the best new releases on this week's list.

2009-09-08
TV on DVD still dominates the list of DVD and Blu-ray releases with few first run releases of note. As for contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, this is the last week before the flood of Summer Blockbusters starts coming out, and while there are a lot that are worth picking up, but very few that rise above the level of a solid purchase.

OSS 117: Rio Ne Repond Plus slipped a spot to sixth with $4.74 million on 642 screens in 3 markets for a total of $15.15 million. Almost all of this came from France, where it repeated on top with $4.03 million on 602 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.83 million after two.

The final weekend of April is usually slow, but that was not the case this year, as nearly every film in the top five beat expectations, sometimes by large margins.
That helped the overall box office total climb by 5% from last weekend to $114 million.
More importantly, that represents a leap of 25% from the same weekend last year.
Year-to-date, 2009 has now made $3.06 billion, which is 17% above last year's pace, and that is a phenomenal number.
The real test starts this weekend, as 2009 goes head-to-head with 2008's record-setting run, but if it can run even, it will be seen as a major victory.

Fast and Furious remained in top shot with $34.65 million on 6361 screens in 57 markets for a total of $143.81 million internationally and $280.02 million worldwide. In Italy, the film opened in first place with $5.04 million on 414 screens over the weekend and $5.14 million in total while it managed the same feat in Australia with $5.69 million on 345 screens over the weekend and $5.88 million in total. It also placed first during its debut in China, but no box office numbers were released. The film fell more than 60% in the U.K. adding $2.82 million on 385 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.97 million after two. In Russia it performed even worse down 75% to $2.14 million on 696 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.48 million.

As spring draws to a close, and studios sweep out the potential misfires, the overall box office numbers slip in anticipation of Wolverine.
Actually, the overall box office was better than expected at $108 million over the weekend, but that was still 18.8% lower than last weekend. More importantly, thanks to 17 Again's stronger than expected start, it was 15.8% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $2.91 billion, which is 17.2% higher than last year's pace. I'm not sure it will be able to maintain this pace over the summer. In fact, I'm nearly 100% sure it won't. That said, the year has built up a sizable lead, and as long as the summer is merely average, we should go into the fall with higher ticket sales.

2009-04-18
A better than average week for movie websites, with no really bad sites, and only a few that are not at least better than average. There was a two-way race for the best of the best, with State of Play's Official Site coming out on top and winning the Weekly Website Award.
|
2009-04-16
Not a lot of competition for the top of the box office chart as nearly all analysts are expecting 17 Again to come out on top. The real question is whether or not the film will top last year's number one film, The Forbidden Kingdom, and whether or not 2009 will continue its domination over 2008.

April is a transition month. At the beginning it is strong, but as we near May, the looming competition is just too great and that scares away the big-ticket releases. That said, there are still a few films that could reach the century mark this month, and it does look stronger than last April and that will help 2009 extend its lead in the box office race.
