Freddy and Jason Kill Competition and (Almost) Everyone Else

2003-08-18

couple of surprises this week, and they were pleasant ones. This helped the box office rise by 4.9% from last week, and an amazing 32% from last year.

Beating practically all predictions, and not just mine, was Freddy vs. Jason. $36.4 million was not only double my prediction, it was higher than the total box office of all but one Friday the 13th movie and all but two Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Where were all these fans last year when Jason X bombed at the theatres? However, Freddy vs. Jason did have pretty bad reviews, although they were on par with the rest of the Nightmare and Friday the 13th series. Add in the genre, fanboy effect, sequelitis and your looking at a large drop next weekend. Oh, and before I get anymore more insulting e-mail on this topic please remember two things: 1.) Try and use actual words and proper grammar, when you say stuff like, 'u r stupid' it just makes me pity you. 2.) Try and be insulting. I hang out in ASVS so it takes a lot to offend me. Be creative, be witty, don't repeat, 'LOL' a dozen time and expect it to have an effect.

S.W.A.T. is holding onto its box office better than expected but it still dropped over 50% this weekend. 51.1% to be more precise leaving a figure of $18.1 million. A relatively average result.

Going back to the genre that made him a star, Kevin Costner did better than expected with Open Range. Buoyed by the best reviews of any wide release this week, it was able to earn $14.0 million this week.

Freaky Friday made just a fraction less than predicted at $13.4 million. It's probably just a couple weeks away from making Disney a profit.

Conversely, Uptown Girls made a fraction more than predicted at $11.3 million. However, reviews suggest future earnings will be hurt by word of mouth and MGM will most likely have to wait till the Ancillary market (Hotels, Airliners, Cruise Ships, etc.) before it sees a profit.

Over the weekend reviews for Grind improved all the way to 9% positive, just ahead of reviews for Gigli. However, its box office was actually worse at only $2.5 million. Grind's per theatre average was barely more than $1000, lower than Finding Nemo in its 12th weekend, and lower than Bend it Like Beckham in its 23rd weekend.

Wedding Weaker than Expected but Still Wins

2003-08-04

ter than expected this week, however in most cases it was just a slight increase. And one of the movies that missed expectations really missed them. This led to an overall drop in the box office, 8.8% from last week and 7.7% from last year.

While American Wedding finished first, it didn't dominate the box office like predicted. $33.4 million is quite short of the predicted $42 million, but not bad for a movie that cost $50 - $60 million to make, (advertising not included.) Reviewers were quite kind to the movie giving it a 55%, just shy of the overall positive mark. But considering it's a sequel, longevity at the box office is still an issue.

To say Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over didn't live up to expectations would be unfair. Sure, it only made $19.5 million when I predicted $21 million. However, my prediction was higher than most and the drop was only 42%, much better than most movies this year. Nearly $69 million after two weeks is also a great success and it should become the highest grossing movie in the Spy Kids Trilogy.

Just 25 days into its run Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl crossed the $200 million dollar mark. That ties Titanic for 10th fastest to reach that milestone. It should beat X-Men 2 sometime this week to rise to fourth place for 2003.

Seabiscuit did better than expected dropping only 15% to $17.6 million. However, that was with an increase of nearly 22% in theatre count. Taking that into account it’s a Per Theatre average drop of a little more than 30%, still impressive. But it is most likely not impressive enough for its budget.

Bad Boys II did much better in its third week dropping only 42%. The movie earned $12.7 million and could beat the original's worldwide gross with just its domestic run.

Gigli did better than expected both critically and financially. That is not to say that it did well in either case, cause it didn't. I just had really, really low expectations. It got better ratings than Boat Trip and better box office than From Justin to Kelly. Both were mild surprises. However, 7% overall and 3% from the Cream of the Crop reviewers (which was much lower than the 10% Boat Trip received) and only $3.8 million at the box office were both incredibly low. This movie's final box office could end up being less than one tenth its total budget.

On a much happier note, Finding Nemo actually climbed a spot in its tenth week in release. It reached $320 million and now sits in 9th place all time.

Also on a happy note, Fox Searchlight expanded Bend it Like Beckham into more than 1000 theatres this week. This is almost twice its previous high of 555. It pulled in another $1.8 million the most it earned in a single weekend since Memorial Day and by the end of next weekend should cross $30 million.

Bend It Like Beckham is Back in the Top Ten

2003-06-09

r its release and more than a month since it first entered the top ten, Bend It Like Beckham is back. In that time, two dozen movies have come and gone, but Bend It Like Beckham has stuck around. This small independent film from Britain has had a wonderful run with at the box office, which has climbed to $20 million domestically and crossed $60 million worldwide. That’s an amazing feat especially when you consider it only cost $8 million to make.

And it has helped launch the careers of its two stars. Parminder K. Nagra has a recurring role on E.R. next season and is in the upcoming Ella Enchanted. And Keira Knightley stars in this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean.

Nemo 2 Strong 4 Competition

Only one movie is opening this week, and that should mean good news for that movie. But it’s better news for the holdovers.

Taking into account the lack of competition, the excellent mid-week number and the phenomenal word-of- mouth and Finding Nemo should finish first for the second week in a row. A drop of less than 40% is expected with a box office of $50 million not out of the question.

The only wide opening this week is 2 Fast 2 Furious, which is a sequel in the loosest definition of the word. Only one star from the first is in the second, there’s a new director, new writers, new producers, etc. How will all of these changes affect the box office? If the reviews are anything to go on, 2 Fast 2 Furious won’t be able to live up to the original. It is getting much weaker reviews than the original, especially among the Cream of the Crop reviewers. Still, it should at least come close to the original’s opening thanks to the sequel effect. Look for nearly $40 million, but absolutely no legs.

Bruce Almighty, already the highest grossing comedy of 2003, will continue its strong run with about $25 million for third place. It just failed to cross $150 million yesterday, but by the time you read this, it will have hit that milestone.

There’s quite a drop between third and fourth place, with The Italian Job getting about half of Bruce Almighty. The predicted $13 million is less than a 40% drop, which is a good sign. But the movie cost too much to pull a profit from the home market.

The Matrix Reloaded will fall to fifth place with just $10 million. You know a movie has high expectations when nearly $250 million in five weeks is considered a disappointment.

On a side note, after a two-week absence Bend It Like Beckham should reappear in the top ten.

Reloaded Breaks Records as X-Men Tumble

As expected, Matrix Reloaded’s opening was huge, but not big enough to keep up with last year when Attack of the Clones opened. After this weekend, 2003 will have fallen another $8 million behind last year’s pace.

While it is true that Matrix Reloaded broke records this weekend, it didn’t break as many as some are saying. This confusion is due to Wednesday’s 10 p.m. previews. Estimates for the Matrix Reloaded preview range from $5 to $9.3 million dollars. Regardless of which figure is more accurate; this did break a record for largest single showing preview. However, this figure was added to Thursday’s box office inflating it past Spider-Man for the largest opening day. Another record that might not be a record was the largest four-day total. Taking Thursday though Sunday we get a total that is on par with Spider-Man’s total of $126 million, depending on how much the Wednesday preview really brought in. Another record broken is largest opening for an R rated movie.

Comparing these figures to the first movie is difficult. The first movie opened slowly as none of the stars had real drawing power. Keanu Reeves was in a slump since Speed, Laurence Fishburne previous best was 14 years earlier, and The Matrix was Carrie Anne Moss’s first major movie. Matrix Reloaded did better on its opening day than the first did on its opening weekend. It made more than 70% of its total box office in just four days. The $92.8 million opening weekend and $134.3 million total are great news, but the lower than expected reviews will probably mean Spider-Man’s total box office of $400 million will not be beat.

In second place, with a surprisingly low drop-off was Daddy Day Care, taking $18.9 million. The Eddie Murphy family friendly movie has now earned $50 million in two weeks, and could be on it’s way to $100 million total.

Dropping 57% on its way from first to third was X-Men 2. The direct competition from Matrix Reloaded hurt it at the box office, but the $17.3 million was more than enough to surpass the first’s total box office. It goes without saying there’s another sequel in the works.

As predicted, Down With Love finished fourth, however, it did significantly worse at the box office than predicted. The 60’s retro comedy earned $7.0 million, less than half of some predictions. Its reviews were quite good compared to most films released this year, but were still shy of the 60% needed for an overall positive rating.

After a larger than expected second week drop-off, The Lizzie McGuire Movie recovered nicely to earn $4.8 million to stay in the top 5 for the third week in a row. For a movie that cost an estimated $25 million to make, and advertise, its box office total of over $32 million should make the studio very happy.

Hanging in the top ten for another week were A Mighty Wind and Bend it Like Beckham. The Folk music mockumentary’s second week in the top ten helped it’s total move past $12 million. Bend it Like Beckham has now been in the top ten for three weeks and its total is now over $15 million.

X-Men 2 Beats the Day Care Kids

2003-05-12

It was a slow week as only one movie opened wide, but this is just the calm before the storm that is Matrix Reloaded. Compared to last year, the summer is falling further behind and needs Matrix Reloaded to open huge on Wednesday.

No surprise which movie came in first. X-Men 2 lost a lot in its second weekend, but not as much as some had predicted. Also not as much as X-Men dropped in its second week, so better legs could push the final box office higher than the original predictions and into the Top 20 All Time. Down 53.2% to $40.0 million for a total of nearly $150 million, just $10 million shy of the original’s total box office.

In second place was Daddy Dare Care with $27.6 million. This continues a trend for Eddie Murphy whose only big hits recently seem aimed at a decidedly younger audience. Reviews were very bad with only 29% positive, include only 19% from the cream of the crop reviewers. So that could hurt Daddy Day Care’s longevity at the theatres, and with a cost of $60 million to make and $30 million to advertise Sony and Revolution studios will probably have to wait for the home market to see a profit.

On Friday I predicted that The Lizzie McGuire Movie would have the lowest drop-off in the top five, as it turned out it had the highest dropping 58% to $7.2 million. This is very surprising considering the younger target audience, which usually means better legs at the theatre. This could be an anomaly due to Mother’s Day, or it could a sign of the Fanboy Effect, or should I say Fangirl Effect. Even with a much greater drop-off The Lizzie McGuire Movie should get the little more than $40 million needed to be profitable during its domestic run.

Holding up better than most horror / suspense films is Identity, which was down only 31% for its third. The weekend figure of $6.5 million was good enough for fourth place and brought its total to nearly $40 million. Identity should continue in the top ten for a few more weeks and surpass its combined budget before its domestic run is finished.

In its fifth week and in fifth place was Anger Management with $5.7 million for a total of $122 million. The movie is shedding theatres fast but should still put in one or two more appearances in the top ten.

Two movies with limited distribution made the top ten this week. A Mighty Wind expanded into 765 theatres and moved from 14th last weekend to 7th this weekend. The mockumentary look at folk music needs about $20 million to make a profit during its domestic run, and that is definitely in sight. The second limited release film was Bend It Like Beckham. A small increase in theatres to 555 and an actual increase in per theatre average helped the British film land in 9th spot after 9 weeks in release. Already profitable from its international run Bend It Like Beckham is getting extra exposure by finishing in the top ten, so it could still climb a spot or two in the coming weeks.

X-Men Wins Easily, But Lizzie has Better Profit Margin

2003-05-05

The first weekend of summer started a little weaker than last year, but it is still very strong. Of course, it wasn’t long ago when summer didn’t start till Memorial Day.

X-Men 2 easily won with $85.6 million, on the high end of the estimates. Better reviews, and a better internal multiplier than the first movie, suggest X-Men 2 should have better legs. However, the sequel will have stronger competition when The Matrix Reloaded opens in just 10 days. Even with this increased competition, $250 million should be an easily obtainable goal.

Opening in second place was The Lizzie McGuire Movie at $17.3 million, $2 million more than it cost to make. It will still take quite a bit more at the box office till the studios share pays for production and advertising, but it’s well on its way to profitability. The opening for Lizzie McGuire is better than fellow Tween movies Agent Cody Banks, What a Girl Wants and Holes. Factoring in the lower production budget and advertising budgets than any of those, Buena Vista should be very happy. Poor reviews could mean weak legs, but it will take a week or two to determine that.

In third was Identity with $9.4 million. While a drop of 41.9% would normally be considered quite bad, the genre mixed with the extreme competition makes this a better than expected result. Fourth place went to Anger Management which dropped 44% to $8.4 million. Holes came in fifth with just shy of $7 million and now has a total of over $45 million in just three weeks.

On an interesting note, Bend It Like Beckham made it’s first appearance in the top ten in its eighth week of release. The British film made $1.5 million in just 484 theatres to bring its total past the $10 million mark. Not bad for a movie that cost about half that to make.

Note: CinemaScores went to a subscription service, so I an no longer be able to use it in my analysis. Sorry for the inconvenience and I am looking for a replacement.

Better Luck Tomorrow is This Weekend’s Best

2003-04-15

m about Asian-American students, Better Luck Tomorrow grabbed $360,000 in just 13 theatres to lead the Per Theatre Average with $27,751. With a cost of only $250,000 and a per Theatre Average that suggests at least some main stream success is in order, this could be the year’s independent darling.

The last movie to carry the hopes, Bend it Like Beckham, is still hanging in the top ten on the Per Theatre chart in its 5th week of release. And it is slowly moving up the total box office charts with its expanding release.

This week’s Box Office Champ, Anger Management was the first movie to open wide with more than $10,000 per theatre since Bringing Down the House. And it was the best Per Theatre Average for a wide release since The Two Towers.

The Good Thief Steals Top Spot

2003-04-07

the-numbers.com/movies/2003/GDTHF.php>The Good Thief, starring Nick Nolte took top spot on Per Theatre Average top ten list. A remake of the 1955 French film, Bob le flambeur, The Good Thief made over $130,000 in just 9 Theatres for an average of nearly $14,620. It’s unlikely that it will get a wide release later on, but it should do well on the art-house circuit.

Bend it like Beckham nearly tripled its theatre count, but was still able to keep its per theatre average over $10,000. It was also able to cross the $1 million mark on just 117 theatres, nearly doubling its total box office take in just three day. Bend It Like Beckham’s run so far as been a success for an independent film, but it needs a strong marketing push to get it more mainstream success.

While no one movie really dominated this list, five did finished above $10,000. Which is quite an unusual feat.

Raising Victor Vargas Rises to the Top

2003-03-31

/www.the-numbers.com/movies/2003/VARGS.php>Raising Victor Vargas opened on top of the Per Theatre Average charts this week with $16,583 per theatre. While that figure is good, it is not good enough to suggest Raising Victor Vargas will have much box office success outside the art house circuit.

Coming in second with a third straight strong performance was Bend it Like Beckham. The British comedy earned more than $600,000 in just 46 theatres, for $13,542 per theatre. Bend it Like Beckham is likely poised to gain some mainstream success as it expands into more theatres.

As predicted, Nowhere in Africa was buoyed by its Oscar win for Best Foreign Language Film. A per theatre average of $8,609 was the best numbers since its debut three weeks ago.

Bend It Like Beckham Scores Again

2003-03-24

of release, Bend It Like Beckham had a per theatre average of $22,259. This represents a drop-off of about 17% and is good enough for a repeat performance at the top of the Per Theatre charts. Comparing it to The Full Monty, again, we see that Bend It Like Beckham is a little behind in both per theatre average and total theatres. But it is too soon to declare a winner in that match.

Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Nowhere in Africa came in fourth with $6,968. The win should help improve its box office performance over the next few weeks.

Bend it Like Beckham Kicks-off its Box Office Run

2003-03-17

tish films, Bend it Like Beckham got off to a great start, earning nearly $200,000 since it opened on Wednesday. Its per theatre take of nearly $27,000 over the weekend was nearly twice as much as its nearest competitor, Spun.

Bend it Like Beckham’s box office run will inevitable be compared with other British films, most notably The Full Monty. The Full Monty, which holds the record for the largest domestic box office for a British Film.

The Full Monty earned $15,000 more during its opening weekend. It's too early to say if Bend it Like Beckham is going to seriously challenge the record.

Bend It Like Beckham Makes its American Debut

2003-02-25

erseas, especially in its native U.K., where it broke the record for largest box office for a British financed and distributed movie, Bend It Like Beckham is a darling with the critics and winner of numerous awards like Best Comedy Film at the British Comedy Awards. Now it is finally set to open in the States, starting with a limited released on March 12th and a planned wide release to follow.

The movie tells the story of Jess Bhamra, a young lady being raised in a traditional Indian family who longs to play professional football (or soccer as it’s known Stateside) like her idol David Beckham. Her family wants her to prepare for a traditional Indian wedding and learn how to cook the perfect chapatti and forget her dreams of sports stardom. With the help of her friend Jules and love interest Joe can she convince her parents to let her chase her dreams?

Bend It Like Beckham stars Parminder K. Nagra, in her feature film debut as Jess Bhamra and Keira Knightley, who won the London Critics Circle Film Awards for British Newcomer of the Year for her role as Jules Paxton. It is the third film written and directed by Gurinder Chadha whose other works include Bhaji on the Beach and What's Cooking?

Distributor Fox Searchlight, the independent movie arm of Fox Studios, hopes that Bend It Like Beckham will break box office records here as well. Currently The Full Monty holds the box office record for British movie at nearly $46 million. But it could also become a cultural phenomenon like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and then sky’s the limit to what it could make.

British comedies hit US

2003-01-05

itish comedy will be hitting the American movie screens in early 2003, and both with very different perspectives. First up is the surprise international hit, Bend it Like Beckham, which will open on March 12 in select cities after a showing at this month’s Sundance Film Festival. The female soccer comedy was a phenomenon in its hometown of Britain last spring. And for all you non-soccer fans, the title refers to the famous British soccer, or football, player, David Beckham, who is married to former Spice Girl, Victoria Adams.

Then there’s the wacky The Guru. Starring Heather Graham, the movie centers on a poor Indian whose search for fame and fortune here in the States leads to his becoming a fake sex guru. Even though The Guru was KO’d by the British critics, it was a modest hit at the box-office and will open here on January 31. (Dates are subject to change. Check local listings.)
