Sometime in August the summer box office season ends, and it pretty easy to see when that happens. Last year it was the fourth weekend when the box office dropped 31.1%. The year before that it was the third weekend with its 22.4% drop. This year summer couldn't even last one weekend in August as it dropped 27.9% from last weekend and 19.9% from last year. The drop in weekend's overall box office was so steep that it took a real bite out of 2004's year to date lead over 2003, which now sits at 4.7%.

The streak of massive hit after massive hit is over as August begins. For the first time in nearly 2 months the number one film at the box office probably won't have a $10,000 per theatre average.

August is a weird month. While summer lasts till September 21st for normal people, in Hollywood summer just sort of ends halfway through. There aren't enough of the holidays left for films that open in late August to take advantage of. So a lot of also-rans get dumped at this time of year. However, earlier in the month there's still a few potential $100 million movies, plus one of the later movies might surprise us as well.

After a break for the Holidays, Hollywood is back in action again, shuffling around another batch of movie release dates.
This week's shuffle includes, among others, new dates for Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,
Garfield,
John Grisham's Skipping Christmas,
J.M. Barrie's Neverland,
Kingdom of Heaven and Little Black Book.
