News Stories About Curious George

The House Always Wins

2006-10-07

While three of the top five renters this week were new releases, none of them did particularly well. Leading the way was The Lake House with $7.92 million, which is merely adequate given the film's theatrical run.

DVD Releases for September 26, 2006

2006-09-26

It was a difficult week to come up with a winner for the DVD Pick of the Week. This was partially because of the huge list of movies being released tomorrow and partially because I'm on cold medication. There were several contenders for the honor but in the end I went with Lady Vengeance - Buy from Amazon and Masters of Horror - Imprint - Buy from Amazon. But be warned, their extreme storytelling means that they are not for everyone.

International Details - Volver Vaults into Fourth Place

2006-06-04

The one major change from the studio estimates was in fourth place as the Spanish film, Volver, grew by 15% to $4.55 million on 835 screens in 5 markets for a total of $21.33 million. The big surprise came in France where the film was up a massive 41% from its opened taking in $2.64 million on 333 screens for a two-week total of $5.53 million. Meanwhile, in Italy is was down a mere 16% to $1.11 million on 309 screens for a total of $3.30 million.

Family Tops Tepid Box Office

2006-02-27

Despite Madea's Family Reunion beating expectations by a substantial margin, the overall box office was still lower for the weekend, hitting just $120 million. That's down by 7.1% from last week, and nearly 2% from the same weekend last year. This means all the gains earned in January were erased in February.

Eight Below Finishes Above Everyone

2006-02-21

Not only was there a surprise winner over the weekend, but every film in the top five beat expectations (although, some by smaller margins than others). This helped push the overall 3-day weekend to $129 million, which is 7.2% higher than last week but 2.5% lower than last year. Add in Monday and the total box office was $157 million, which was less than $1 million below last year's figure.

President's Day Delay

2006-02-20

As always, the long weekend has caused a delay in both the Weekend Wrap-up and the Per Theatre Charts columns. In the meantime, here are the studio estimates for the 3-day and 4-day weekends.

Tight Race over Long Weekend

2006-02-17

There's a two way race for top spot on the box office charts this Presidents Day long-weekend. None of the three wide releases is likely to come close to last year's top opener. But the overall box office should remain close to last year's pace.

Box Office was Tickled Pink

2006-02-13

Good news: every film in the top five either beat expectations, or at least came within a rounding error of matching them. Bad news: the top two films combined didn't earn as much as Hitch opened with last year. Good news: the overall box office saw gains, climbing to $121 million, 13.9% higher from last weekend and 0.3% higher than last year. Bad news: this does mean that ticket sales were slightly lower compared to last year, but with the Winter Olympics starting, that is to be expected.

Enigmatic Weekend

2006-02-10

Four films open wide this weekend and all four pose serious questions to box office analysts. Can the winning streak by horror films continue? Will The Pink Panther or Harrison Ford make comebacks? Is 2-D Animation really dead? How much of an effect will the Olympics have? Will my nagging cough ever go away? By Monday we will know the answers to most of these questions, but my predictions are yes, no, no, yes, not a whole lot and I really hope so.

Movie Website Updates for February 3 - February 9

2006-02-09

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. It was the busiest week in more than a month, but there weren't many big launches or massive updates, so it is the slow-growing V For Vendetta - Official Site that earns the Weekly Website Award.

2006 Preview: February

2006-02-01

Looking at the new crop of movies coming out this month, one has to wonder if January's dumping ground wasn't extended a month. Of the roughly dozen movies on this list, none look like they have what it takes to be a major hit, although there should be a few midlevel ones. There are also a couple of interesting stories to keep track of. For instance, will Firewall be Harrison Ford's triumphant return to the top of the box office charts? Will Night Watch earn a wide release? Just how bad will The Pink Panther be?
