Marrying the Mafia 2 is the latest local film to lead the South Korean box office as it opened with $5.555 million on 449 screens, $7.515 million including Thursday.
Not only was that easily enough for first place in its home market, but also put the film in third place on the overall international box office charts.

The 40-Year Old Virgin topped the U.K. marked with an impressive $3.26 million on 394 screens in the U.K., but this is probably not indicative of its potential in other international markets. The film should do well in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, but will likely struggle in non-English speaking markets. (Germany may be an exception.)

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases, classics and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. It is a much slower week for DVD releases when compared to last week, but that's not surprising since last week was the the busiest week for DVD releases in a few years, at least. There are a few choices for the DVD pick of the week depending on a couple of questions. Do you own any version of Jaws? If not, pick up the 30th Anniversary Edition. Are you Canadian? If so, pick up Degrassi Junior High - Season 2, (I know I mentioned it last week, but it isn't available in Canada till tomorrow.) Otherwise, Hitch, (Buy from Amazon) is probably your best choice.

Revenge of the Sith dominated nearly every market it opened in and in most of them it was the only new film in the top ten. Because of this there's almost no international details to report and those details that are available are single market releases.

I Heart Huckabees again led a busy week on the Per Theatre Charts with just over $900,000 in 44 theatres for an average of $20,480. Guiana 1838 continues to impress, earning $16,610 in its lone theatre. The award season hopeful, Stage Beauty, got off to a good start with an average of $12,885 in three theatres. And Tarnation opened in one theatre over the weekend and earned an estimate 58 times its $220 production budget with $12,740. (Although that production budget is misleading because it only takes into account the editing software and not the decade's worth of home movie film, still photographs, etc. used to make the film, nor post-production, prints and advertising.)

Only one film could even come close to hitting $10,000 and it blew right past it. A Dirty Shame earned $29,384 in its lone theatre in Baltimore. Obviously it helps that Baltimore is the home city of the film's director, John Waters.

Like last week, we have an interesting mix of limited releases including some movies that should be a player when award season hits full stride. At least they were made with that purpose in mind.
