Shark Tale finished its international run with a second place $2.08 million opening in Japan on 485 screens. Its $4,296 per screen average it quite low for the market and generally means the film won't have the usual legs films in Japan have. The film performed much better in Italy where it finished first again with $3.0 million, down just 23% during its sophomore stint. Overall it took in $5.2 million to raise its international total to $181 million, but without any more openings it might struggle to hit $200 million.

The Aviator beat weekend estimates by a substantial margin leading to a $5.9 million box office on 3000 screens in 34 markets. The multi-Oscar winning movie has hit $86.2 million internationally and will cross $200 million worldwide before too long. The film dropped a spot to fifth place in South Korea with $834,660 for the week and slipped to second in Australia with $798,000. The only market the film opened it was Argentina, where it easily took top spot with $232,000.

Ocean's Twelve opening in another two markets, (Mexico and Belgium) helped the heist film finish first on the international charts with $22.6 million on 5,183 screens in 46 markets. The film opened well in Belgium where it easily took first place with $1.2 million on just 75 screens. That's up nearly 40% compared to the the original, but down nearly 10% in Euros. In Mexico the film could only manage $1.8 million on 550 screens for a rather limp per screen average. However, in most markets the film is not holding up as well as the studio would have liked. For instance, in Germany the film dropped by more than 50%, in France the decline was 44%. The only exception appears to be Italy where holidays and a serious boost to screen count helped the film climb 33% to $2.9 million over the weekend.

It's a rare feat for a non-Hollywood film to top the international charts, but that's just what the German spoof, Seven Dwarfs, did this week. Playing in just three markets the film took in $10.6 million on under 1,000 screens. In its home market of Germany the film eased just 19% to $9.2 million; the result was not quite as good in Austria where it dropped a respectable 30% to $915,000, but it was in Switzerland where it shined - increasing 4% to $500,000. Overall the film has now made $29.0 million so far but the real test comes with increased competition from holiday fare and the ability to find an audience in non-German speaking markets.

Holidays throughout Europe, and a $1.5 million, first place finish in Russia helped Shark Tale remain in top spot for the fourth straight week, although it was a much closer contest this week. Highlights include $4.3 million in the U.K., off just 24% compared to its sophomore weekend, $4.0 million in France, which was up 47% from last weekend for a $15.5 million in 4,300 theatres in 27 markets weekend. Its international running total topped $100 million, the 13th film to do so this year, and now sits at $109.6 million.

Despite a 45% drop in its weekend haul, Shark Tale was able easily able to earn it third first place finish on the international charts. Still early in its run, the film took home $16.2 million in 4,368 theatres in 24 markets pushing its total to $80.3 million internationally. Without any openings the film relied on strong holdovers like in the U.K. where it drop 39%, in France it was off 32% and 35% in Germany.

Collateral finished first on the international charts breaking The Village's five week run on top. Although, with a weekly take of only $9.4 million in 28 markets, it has as much to do with the weakness of the competition as it does with the strength of the film itself. The largest chunk of that box office came from France, where the film earned $3.8 million.

For the fifth week in a row The Village finished in first place with $14.0 million on 4000 screens in 38 markets. The biggest opening of the week was $5.2 million in Spain, but suffered another collapse in Mexico dropping 55% during its second weekend there. Its international total hit $100 million over the weekend, the fifth Disney film to do so this year, and the 17th overall.

The Village once again top took spot on the international scene, but by a very narrow margin. Still being plagued by sharp drop-offs, the film earned $11.2 million on 3,500 screens in 34 markets. So far the film has taken it $117 million internationally, higher than its $113 million it earned domestically. Although, it is much lower than M. Night Shyamalan's previous movie Signs.

There were very few surprises over the weekend, however, the box office as a whole was slightly depressed compared to expectations. This led to a 10.3% drop from last weekend, and more importantly a 9.4% drop from last year. After a summer that can best be described as mixed, Fall 2004 is getting off to a dubious start. Year to date 2004 has brought in $6.607 billion in ticket sales, up 4.8% from this time last year, inline with estimated ticket price increases.

Historically speaking, the weekend after the Labor Day long weekend tends to be the slowest weekend of the year. But this year looks to buck the odds, as we should see a slight bounce from last weekend. And this increase should be thanks entirely to one movie, while this week's other new release will have to settle for a distant second place. The rest of the top five, and indeed the top ten, will finish way back but within a couple million of each other.

Labor Day Weekend is generally the second slowest weekend of the year (the slowest weekend of the year is usually the weekend after Labor Day). This year we saw more films open than usually do, but none of them opened well enough to be considered a real success. This resulted in a serious drop-off from last weekend of 14.4%. The year-to-year comparisons are a little off since Labor Day occurred a week earlier last year. Compared to Labor Day 2003, 2004 was off 13.5% for the 3-day frame and 14.4% for the 4-days.

It's another weekend with lots of movies, but again the average theatre count is under 2000. But unlike last weekend when three of the four films were brutally attacked by critics, this week we have a perfect record, all four films are being brutally attacked by critics. At least the ones the critics got to see. I figure this weekend one film will do enough to be considered a success, or sorts, two will fail, and one will fail spectacularly.

We had a surprise number one at the box office this weekend, and add to that a few holdovers that held up better than expected and the weekend wasn't as bad as it could have been. It was still down by 12.1% from last weekend, but was nearly flat with last year up just 1.24%. Granted, this time last year it was the Labor Day Long Weekend, which even as the slowest long weekend of the year will throw off the comparison by a little bit. Year to date 2004 continues to see its lead shrink and it now sits at just over 4%, barely more than ticket price inflation.

While it may look like a busy weekend at first glance as there are four wide releases, their average theatre count is under 2000. Also, three of the four are receiving some of the harshest responses from the critics seen this summer. Because of that, there should be a real drop at the overall box office this weekend, a downturn that won't end till mid-October, give or take a week.

It was a very strange weekend; going in no movie was the obvious choice for number one and most analysts were predicting that most of new films would flop. I went one step further and predicted that all of them would flop. In the end, the new movies did better, on average, while the holdovers held up about as well as expected. This helped avoid a complete collapse at the box office, but it was still down 14.1% from last weekend. However, it was up 17.1% from last year, ending a mini-streak of year-to-year drops. That help 2004 from slipping any further in the year-to-date comparison, which 2004 currently leads 2003 $6.201 billion to $5.935 billion, or 4.48%.

Like last weekend, all three movies opening wide this weekend are receiving less than stellar reviews. But unlike last weekend, there's no built in audiences for most of these movies, so look for a sharp drop at the box office. On the plus side, there should be quite a battle for top spot with five films within striking distance of each other.

There was a huge jump in the box office this weekend as Friday's top ten was almost 42% ahead of last week's pace. Then Saturday came and the dubious quality of the new entrants helped weekend returned to normal. (While Hurricane Charley shut down much of Florida, it would only have a small effect on the overall box office.) Even so, there was still a 21.2% increase from last weekend, but surprisingly an 6.87% decrease from last year.

August is a weird month. While summer lasts till September 21st for normal people, in Hollywood summer just sort of ends halfway through. There aren't enough of the holidays left for films that open in late August to take advantage of. So a lot of also-rans get dumped at this time of year. However, earlier in the month there's still a few potential $100 million movies, plus one of the later movies might surprise us as well.

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. This week saw a deceptively poor crop of site as there were a lot of movie site launched / updated / released, more than 30 in fact. However, very few of them even came close to the being considered for this week's award. It's so bad I've spent the last 3 hours looking for a gem of movie site that I may have missed in previous weeks. In the end it was Kill Bill: Volume 2 - Official Site that won the award with only one or two other that were even briefly considered. - House of Sand and Fog is moved forward one week to December 19, 2003. I've changed this to a "limited release only", since Dreamworks are planning to open it in 500 to 600 theaters only.
- Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! moves up from March 19, 2004 to January 23, 2004
- Eurotrip gets an official release date: February 20, 2004
- The Alamo will open on April 9, 2004
- Around the World in 80 Days will open on June 16, 2004
- King Arthur is moved up from Christmas, 2004 to July 7, 2004
- The Village's release date is pinned down to August 6, 2004
- The Princess Diaries 2 will open on August 11, 2004
- The Last Shot's release date gets narrowed down a little, to September, 2004
- Raising Helen will open on September 17, 2004
- Ladder 49 will open on October 8, 2004
