News Stories About Monster

DVD Releases for September 1st, 2009

2009-08-31

It's the calm before the storm on the home market. There's not a lot of TV on DVD releases this week, but that's temporary, while the summer blockbusters will start flooding the market in just two weeks. From that week till the end of the year, there will be a major blockbuster release coming out practically every week. As for this week, the list of top tier releases is not particularly strong, but there are a trio of DVD Pick of the Week contenders. These include Earth on Blu-ray, Supernatural - Season Four on DVD or Blu-ray, and Degrassi - The Next Generation - Season 8 on DVD. Each one has their draws and weaknesses, but all three are worthy of the title.

DVD Releases for August 19, 2008, Part I

2008-08-18

This is the week that Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour makes its debut on DVD and Blu-ray. This movie was a huge hit theatrically, so it will be interesting to see how well it sells on the home market. However, while it is certainly a very good deal, I'm not sure it is a real contender for DVD Pick of the Week. For that we have to look to Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles on either DVD or Blu-ray, but there are also a few other releases worth checking out. There are are plenty of other releases, so much so that we had to split this week's list into two. Look for part II here.

DVD Releases for June 1, 2004

2004-05-31

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. This was a hugely busy week for DVD releases. Taking a look at the list of releases we find almost 700 DVDs, unfortunately, it's mostly a case of quantity not quality. There are a LOT of re-releases coming out this week, many related to upcoming films. However, there is not one release that shouts Pick of the Week, so I didn't choose one. But there are so many DVD being released that there should be at least one to fit everyone's tastes.

It's a Sign of the Apocalypse, I Hope

2004-03-17

The reality-TV game show-esque film Games People Play came in first on the Per Theatre Average charts. It earned, well maybe not earned but made $12,346 in its lone theatre over the weekend.

Oscars Boost Box Office of Several Films

2004-03-08

With its 11 Oscar wins and huge jump in theatre count, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King should have had the largest post-Oscar jump at the box office. And while in raw dollars it did, it was the lesser known The Barbarian Invasions that had the biggest percent jump. The Canadian film and winner of Best Foreign Language Film jumped more than 137% at the box office. Its per theatre average also jumped by nearly 40%, compared to the nearly 20% drop by Return of the King.

Lost Independence

2004-03-01

The Oscars weren't the only award celebration held over the weekend as the IFP Independent Spirit Awards were also handed out. Lost in Translation was the big winner but plenty of other talent was rewarded.

Lording over the Oscars

2004-02-29

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King swept all the categories it was nominated for in winning a record-equaling 11 Oscars earlier this evening. Here is a list of the winners with reactions to be posted tomorrow.

Numbers Readers Predicting Return of the King Oscar Sweep

2004-02-29

The final results are in from our Predict the Academy Awards Competition, and Numbers readers are forecasting a Lord of the Rings sweep at the ceremony tonight.

A stunning 90% of voters are calling for Lord of the Rings to win Best Picture and Peter Jackson to win Best Director - some of the strongest predictions we've seen in the 7 years we've been running the poll. The movie is also projected to win in every other category in which its nominated.

With no Rings stars nominated for acting awards though, some of the other results are still ripe for speculation.

Another Sign of Weakness

2004-02-26

No movie managed to beak the $10,000 per theatre average this weekend. Overall the best showing was The Battle of Algiers with $9,143. The best new limited release, Lost Boys of Sudan, finished in second place with $7,485. In the mean time, the best wide release was way down the list in 16th place. That film, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen could only manage an average of $3,736.

SAG Celebrates a Decade of Excellence

2004-02-23

The 10th Annual Screen Actor Guild Awards were handed out on Sunday, and there were a not a whole lost of surprises this year. At least not if you take the Golden Globe awards into consideration.

They Couldn't have Dreamt of a Better Opening

2004-02-12

It's obvious The Dreamers wasn't hampered by its NC-17 rating. Not only is its per theatre average of $28,526 the best of the week, it was the best this year beating Big Fish by more than $8,000.

Mormons and Mountains

2004-02-05

Only two films topped $10,000 per theatre this week, but the race was top spot was close enough to make it an interesting weekend on the per theatre charts. Touching the Void remained in first place with $14,837, down just 24% percent from last weekend. In second place with $14,311 was Latter Days. It is particularly interesting to see Latter Days perform so well as Madstone Theaters pulled the from its theatres allegedly due to, 'aesthetic reasons.'

Filling the Void

2004-01-29

The mountain climbing documentary, Touching the Void, topped this week's Per Theatre Average chart. The film earned almost $100 thousand in just 5 theatres for an impressive average of $19,395. That was nearly double the second place contender, Empathy, which took in $11,975 in its only theatre.

2004-01-27

Nominations for the 76the Annual Academy Awards were announced today. As always, here is a list of the nominations, plus reactions below.

Weak Week on the Per Theatre Charts

2004-01-21

Not one movie made it to the $10,000 per theatre average, although a few came close. The debut of Along Came Polly came in first with $9,290 per theatre, while the second weekend for The Battle of Algiers was just behind with $9,240 per theatre. Perhaps the best performance was by Girl with a Pearl Earring, which saw an increase in both theatre count and per theatre average.

2003 SAG Nominations Announced

2004-01-18

On Thursday the 10th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards(R) Nominations were announced. Here is a list of all the nominations in theatrical categories as well as a brief reaction to them.

Having Designs on Top Spot

2004-01-15

The two documentaries about famous designer, Yves St. Laurent, finished first on the per theatre average this week. While its average of $15,385 was enough to take top spot, it is not particularly high for a movie opening in only one theatre and chances of mainstream success are not likely.

No Small Fry

2004-01-06

In an unusual turn of events, Big Fish saw its per theatre average jump this weekend to $20,356 in 125 theatres. This bodes very well for this Friday when it expands into more than 2000 theatres. Next weekend it may no longer be on top on the per theatre average chart, but should place well on the top five overall.

Monster Opening

2003-12-30

Three of the four movies that broke $10,000 per theatre last week also accomplished that feat this week. However, it was a new comer that took top spot. Monster earned over $100,000 since it opened on Christmas day and it had a weekend average of $21,708, which was more than $5000 above its nearest competitor.

Select Company

2003-12-24

Three movies open in limited release this week, two on Christmas, one more on Boxing Day. If you live in a bigger city and none of the wide releases interest you, you might want to check out these alternatives.
