It's a rather slow week for DVD releases with fewer than normal instantly jumping out as must haves. There were some contenders for DVD Pick of the Week with the top two being Masters of Horror: Larry Cohen - Pick Me Up - Buy from Amazon and Over the Hedge - Buy from Amazon. If I were to give the edge to one of them, it would be Over the Hedge.

16 Blocks shared the top of the charts with The Pink Panther. 16 Blocks led on the rental charts $6.85 million to $6.55 million, but the two films finished in opposite order on the sales charts.

It was another incredibly busy week with three new films occupying the top three spots and four of them in the top five. Leading the way on the rental charts was Underworld: Evolution with $8.68 million in DVD rentals.

It's like the week of the Western with that genre making appearances in nearly every category, Special Edition, Box Sets, TV on DVD. But while there are certainly some that were in the running for DVD Pick of the Week, (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 2-Disc Collector's Edition, for instance), it was a limited release that is the DVD Pick of the Week. And that film is Sarah Silverman - Jesus is Magic - Buy from Amazon, but I fully admit my pro-Sarah Silverman bias has something to do with this decision.

Nearly every film in the top five beat expectations over the weekend, which helped soften the post-holiday drop-off to just 3.9%, and push the overall box office to $121 million. The weekend was up a massive 23.2% over the same weekend last year.
Year-to-date, 2006 has overtaken 2005 by 2%, which is even more impressive when you remember that 2005 got off to a strong start.
However, as history shows us, it is far too soon to tell how well this year will go.

Just the one real wide release this weekend, but there are three other films either opening or expanding into what some might consider a wide release. Only the one film has any shot at the number one spot, and two might not even make the top ten.

It was a very close race over the Martin Luther King long weekend, with the top three separated by just over $1 million over the 3-day weekend.
However, the overall box office was still down 1.7% from last weekend and 9.0% from last year.
Year-to-date, 2006 is still off to a strong start, but it's too early for those numbers to mean much.

It's another busy weekend with four wide releases, but unlike last week, none are earning terrible reviews. Of course, none of these films are being championed by the critics and none look like they will be runaway hits at the box office either. Still, it should be a close contest for top spot with several interesting races along the way.

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. I can't say that it was a particularly busy week, but at least we had a site that was well deserving of recognition in Nanny McPhee - Official Site.

The first full weekend of 2006 brings us three wide releases, two of which were not screened for critics. The only film that is being reviewed is the latest sadistic horror film from Lionsgate. But while the overall box office will suffer, there is quite a race for top spot brewing, with three films having a legitimate shot at winning the box office crown.

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Not the busiest of weeks, but there were a few contenders for the Weekly Website Award with The Pink Panther - Official Site taking the prize.

It's the beginning of a new year, January 1st, 2006 (or at least it was when I wrote this).
The good news is 2005 is finally over.
The bad news is 2006 again starts with the month of January, which is always a really slow way to start the year.
This is a real dead month when it comes to new releases, in fact, of the 10 new releases coming out this month, I'm excited about seeing... none.
(There are a few movies that could be popular among their target demographic, but I'm just not in those groups.)
But at least there are a few Oscar contenders that opened in limited release last month that are looking to go wide sometime during the month and that is the only real saving grace.

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates, including this week's winner, Jarhead - Official Site.
