News Stories About The Matador

DVD Releases for December 19, 2006

2006-12-19

This is the last week before Christmas and there are a lot of DVDs on this week's list that would make perfect last minute Christmas gifts. There are also a lot of DVDs that feel like they are being dumped on the home market in the hopes that they will be scooped up by ever desperate shoppers. Of the contenders, Jackie Chan's Police Story - Special Collector's Edition and The Simpsons - The Complete Ninth Season - Collectable Lisa Head Packaging came close to taking home the honor. But in the end I went with When the Levees Broke.

Big Man on the Home Market

2006-07-29

There were not that many releases from this week's crop to chart, but it was a newcomer taking top spot as She's the Man lead both the rental and the sales chart this week. It earned $5.57 million after one week of rentals while the sales figures were not released as usual.

Lack of New Releases Maintain Failure's Winning Streak

2006-07-22

For the third weekend in a row, Failure to Launch topped the rental charts as it added $5.77 million over the week for a total of $25.18 million after three.

Clear Sailing for Launch

2006-07-15

A near total lack of competition allowed Failure to Launch to remain in first place with $8.87 million over the week for a two-week total of $19.41 million.

DVD Releases for July 4, 2006

2006-07-03

This year July 4th lands on a Tuesday, and with most people's thoughts on BBQs and not DVDs, the selection of new releases is absolutely terrible and is easily the weakest I can remember. In fact, even with just ten entries, it still feels like I'm padding the total a bit. Fortunately there were a couple of releases in contention for DVD Pick of the Week, including the first season of the new Doctor Who, although with this DVD, the price was a little scary. So in the end I went with The Matador - Buy from Amazon, which would have been a contender even during the busiest week.

Neil Young has Golden Weekend

2006-02-14

Neil Young: Heart of Gold was the only film to top $10,000 per theatre average this weekend taking in almost $54,000 in 4 theatres for an average of $13,477.

Shandy's Start's no Bull

2006-01-31

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story topped the per theatre charts this week after earned more than $60,000 in just 3 theatres for an average of $20,295. The only other regular format film to crack the $10,000 market was Rang De Basanti with and average of $11,503 in 61 theatres, however, it is a niche market film and that usually means steep declines.

Momma's So Big

2006-01-30

Practically every film in the top five was able to beat, or at least meet expectations, and that helped the month end on a strong note. Overall the weekend box office take was $126 million, up 5.1% from last weekend and more importantly, up 2.2% from last year. So far 2006 has brought in $662 million, which 1.4% ahead of last year's pace.

Taking the Fight out of the Per Theatre Charts

2006-01-24

Not one film could reach the $10,000 per theatre average mark this weekend, with Why We Fight coming the closest with $8,929.

Game, Set, Match - Updated

2006-01-03

Match Point was the clear winner on this week's per theatre average charts, as it earned nearly $400,000 in just 8 theatres for an average of $49,824. The second placed film, The New World, was well back with an average of $19,383 during its first full weekend of release. The Matador, which was the only other new film of the weekend, earned $69,000 in 4 theatres for a per theatre average of $17,275. Last week's number one film, Cache (Hidden), slipped to fourth place with a still healthy $14,532. Brokeback Mountain climbed back above the $10,000 market with $3.6 million in 269 theatres for an amazing average of $13,455 during its fourth week of release. Lastly, Casanova made $400,000 in 37 theatres during its first full weekend of release for an average of $10,963.

2006 Preview: January

2006-01-02

It's the beginning of a new year, January 1st, 2006 (or at least it was when I wrote this). The good news is 2005 is finally over. The bad news is 2006 again starts with the month of January, which is always a really slow way to start the year. This is a real dead month when it comes to new releases, in fact, of the 10 new releases coming out this month, I'm excited about seeing... none. (There are a few movies that could be popular among their target demographic, but I'm just not in those groups.) But at least there are a few Oscar contenders that opened in limited release last month that are looking to go wide sometime during the month and that is the only real saving grace.

Duo Debuts in Limited Release

2005-12-30

Only two films are opening in limited release this week, but they have a lot in common, and not just the first three letters of their name. (But mostly that.)

Movie Website Updates for December 23 - December 29

2005-12-29

This week's list of movie site is abridged and only contains the two films that are opening this week plus more than a dozen site that have never appeared on this list before. However, it was one of the two new openings, Match Point - Official Site, that took the weekly website award.

Zorro Leaves its Mark

2005-11-27

The Legend of Zorro fell from second to sixth this week and because of that its quest from $100 million internationally took a serious hit. Over the weekend the film pulled in $4.20 million on 4062 screens in 62 markets for a running tally of $80.73 million. In France the film fell 57% to $1.01 million over the weekend and $14.80 million during its four-week run while it had a similar drop-off in Spain where it was down 56% to $475,000 over the weekend and $9.10 million in total. The box office was less kind in Russia, (down 68% to $136,000); Germany, (down 70% to $232,000) and the U.K., (down 83% to $120,000).

Movie Website Updates for September 23 - September 29

2005-09-29

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates, including this week's winner, The Greatest Game Ever Played - Official Site.

Movie Website Updates for September 16 - September 22

2005-09-22

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates. This week's list is a little shorter than usual partially because I'm moving today and had to complete the list on Wednesday. Because of this there was no site that really stood out as deserving the Weekly Website Award; perhaps next week there will be two winners.
