After gathering in all the data the winner for the race for fifth place is Million Dollar Baby, I think. It would need to lost more than 40% from last week's total and that's not taking into account its openings in South Korea at $1,515,672 and second place, its $110,000, third place debut in Finland, $86,000 in Russia, $50,000, second place debut in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, exact weekend totals are unknown but it is estimated at $6 million raising its international total to $43 million so far.

-up to the Oscars has begun, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announcing the twelve documentaries in contention for a nomination. The Academy has picked out these movies for further viewings by the nominations committee, who will announce the 5 official nominees on January 25, 2005.
Leading the list is undoubtedly Super Size Me, Morgan Spurlock's tale of a month spent eating food only from McDonalds.
The movie was one of the breakout successes of the Summer, earning over $11.5 million in the US.
Other likely early favorites are Touching the Void - a contraversial pick, since most of the movie is a dramatization - and surfing movie Riding Giants.
The list contains a couple of surprising omissions.
Most notable is that in the year of the political documentary, not a single political movie was nominated. Although Fahrenheit 9/11 is not entered in the category, the absence of such movies as Control Room and Voices From Iraq is unexpected.
Other high-grossing movies not on the list include What the #$'! Do We Know, The Corporation and
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster.
The full list of movies still in contention for Best Documentary are:

Open Water had the kind of opening most limited release film can only dream of. $1.1 million dollars is just 47 theatres for an average of $23,424. How well it can hold up as the film expands is the real test for this film. Coming in second place was Outfoxed - Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism with $15,611 average in 5 theatres. This is even more impressive when you realize the film has already been released on DVD. Last week's winner, Garden State, dropped to third place with an average of $14,617, which is a drop of just 35% despite nearly quadrupling its theatre count. Big things are in store for this film.
