This felt like a slow week to me, but looking at the list there were 15 spotlight reviews, which is a huge amount for one week. There are a large number of DVDs worth checking out, but looking at the top of the list, I think Christopher Titus - Love is Evol is the best DVD coming out this week, and the winner of the DVD Pick of the Week. As has happened pretty much every week this year, there are so many DVDs on this week's list that is had to be split into two. The second part can be found here.

2006-04-02
Two openings in two major markets helped Hostel climb into sixth place with $4.03 million on 1120 screens in 27 markets for a running tally of $15.42 million. Its best opening was in the U.K. where it debuted in second place with $2.12 million on 304 screens while it struggled in Spain with just $1.01 million on 250. The film has already earned enough to show a profit even after taking into account P&A budget, exhibitor's share, etc. and should be able to double its current international total before its run is over.

Despite a weak DVD, Derailed topped the rental charts with $8.39 million during its first week of release.
Last week's winner, A History of Violence, fell 28% to $6.42 million and now has $15.42 million during its home market run. A pair of family films, Chicken Little and Dreamer - Inspired by a True Story, came in third and fourth with $5.68 million and $5.45 million respectively. Rounding our the top five was Walk the Line, which added $5.10 million to its four-week total of $34.19 million.

The only opening of note for Syriana over the weekend was Turkey where the film placed third with $211,000 on 62 screens. Without a major opening, the film fell 35% to $3.68 million on 1992 screens in 43 markets and now has $27.35 million, which is still a disappointing total.

A number one opening in France, as well as a slew of smaller debuts, pushed Underworld: Evolution into sixth place on the international charts with $4.98 million on 1473 screens in 20 markets for a running tally of $36.12 million after nearly two months in release. In France the film earned $1.84 million on 346 screens while it managed the same feat in a trio of Asian markets: Taiwan with $600,000 on 75 screens, Malaysia with $310,000 on 45, and Hong Kong with $290,000 on 25. Interestingly, the original was banned in Malaysia.

A fourth place, $1.63 million debut on 250 screens in France helped Memoirs Of A Geisha leap up the charts this weekend. Overall the film finished in sixth place on the international charts with $3.98 million on 1723 screens in 47 markets for an international total of $88.34 million. The film placed higher during its opening in Finland with $79,000 on 12 screen over the weekend and $95,000 in total while it had to settle for ninth place in Belgium with $200,000 on 29 screens.

There wasn't a single film with a per theatre average topping $10,000 this weekend with Tsotsi coming the closest with $65,000 in 7 theatres for an average of $9,326.

On the weekend before the Oscars are announced, Brokeback Mountain climbed a couple of spots to sixth with $4.44 million on 1368 screens in 30 markets for an international total of $53.89 million. New openings include Belgium where the filmed debuted in second place with $312,000 on a mere 27 screens for the best per screen average in the market. It wasn't as potent in Poland where it had to settle for fourth place with $194,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $217,000 in total. The film also benefited from soft in the U.K. where it slipped just 5% to $442,000 on 245 screens for a very impressive total of $15.83 million so far. It was even better during its second weekend in Holland where it rose 1% to $210,000 for the weekend and $562,000 in total.

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story topped the per theatre charts this week after earned more than $60,000 in just 3 theatres for an average of $20,295. The only other regular format film to crack the $10,000 market was Rang De Basanti with and average of $11,503 in 61 theatres, however, it is a niche market film and that usually means steep declines.

Of the 13 awards the Screen Actors Guild will hand out on January 29th, 2006, five will be awarded to theatrical releases. And like past awards nominations, Brokeback Mountain again led the way, with four in total.
However, this time there were two films close behind as Crash and Capote each received three nominations.

Brokeback Mountain was the big winner today as Golden Globe nominations were announced. With seven nods, it led all films, which is an important Oscar indicator.

Brokeback Mountain had the best per theatre average of the year, and the best for a Live Action film of all time.
The film earned an unbelievable $547,425 in 5 theatres for an average of $109,485.
If that was the only film on this week's chart it would have been an impressive week; however, Memoirs of a Geisha also had a stellar start, earning nearly $700,000 in 8 theatres for an average of $85,313.
Other members of the $10,000 club include the overall box office leader, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe with $18,130 and Transamerica, which just manage to earn a spot with $10,686, which was more than 50% lower than last weekend.

The Independent Spirit Awards announced the nominations today and The Squid and the Whale led the way with six nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and nods in three of the four acting categories.

There was a surprise leader at the top of the Per Theatre Charts, with Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic earning an impressive average of $17,782 in its 7 theatres.
Next up was Pride and Prejudice, which reached the top ten with $2.9 million in 215 for an average of $13,326. Lastly, there was Gay Sex in the 70s, which actually won last week's race after all the late figures came in; this weekend is added $11,744 to its box office while still playing in the one theatre.

Jarhead was one of only two films to crack the $10,000 per theatre average mark over the weekend with a chart topping average of $11,500. The only other film to do so was the overall box office champ, Chicken Little, which managed an average of $10,961 in 3,654 theatres.

The re-release of The Passenger led the way on the per theatre charts, with an average of $12,079 in two theatres.
Just behind was Paradise Now with a nearly identical average of $12,006, but the latter film did it in twice as many theatres.
The only holdover to top $10,000 was Shopgirl, with 460,000 in 42 theatres for an average of $11,037. Lastly, the overall box office champ, Saw II , just managed to reach the that milestone with $31.7 million in 2,949 theatres for an average of $10,758.

Shopgirl topped the Per Theatre Charts this weekend, earning $230,000 on 8 theatres for an average of $28,711.
The film I thought would lead the way, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, came in second with $180,000 on 8 theatres for an average of $22,583.
Both of those films should find mainstream success.

There were four films in the $10,000 club this weekend, but not one of them was a new release.
Leading the way for the second weekend in a row was Good Luck and Good Luck, with an average of $18,305, despite seeing its theatre count climb from 11 to 68.
Second place went to Capote, which is holding on really well, with just over $360,000 in 30 theatres for an average of $12,129.
The Squid and the Whale just finished ahead of Little Manhattan, $10,368 to $10,355.

Despite playing in nearly three times as many theatres as its nearest competitor, Good Luck and Good Luck was still able to top the Per Theatre Charts with an incredible $420,000 in just 11 theatres for an average of $38,313.
In second place was The Squid and the Whale with $125,000 on 4 screens for an average of $30,927 over three days and $155,000 over 5.
The first of two holdovers, Capote, finished third with an average of $16,489 in 24 theatres, while the last film in the $10,000 club was Little Manhattan, which dropped less than 16% to $15,354.

The Truman Capote BioPic took top spot on the per theatre charts this weekend with $325,000 in 12 theatres for an average of $27,071. The only other film to reach $10,000 this weekend was Little Manhattan, which earned an average of $18,199 in its two theatres.
