News Stories About Diary of a Mad Black Woman

DVD Releases for June 12, 2007

2007-06-11

The Summer is traditionally the weakest time of the year for DVD releases and this is not surprising as the target audience is too busy checking out the latest theatrical releases to be bothered with the home market. First-run releases are also weak because the delay from theater to home means we are not getting prime offerings here. TV on DVD releases are likewise weak because it is too late to take advantage of season finales and too soon to take advantage of season premieres. So, to find the best offering, one has to look to limited releases like Grbavica - Buy from Amazon, or TV movies like Masters of Horror - The Screwfly Solution. But the DVD Pick of the Week goes to a classic, The Hustler - Two-Disc Collector's Edition

Seeking for Number One

2005-07-16

It looks like the home market is starting to recover from its extended slump as Hide & Seek was the number one with $11.71 million in combined rentals, $10.55 million from DVDs and $1.16 million from VHS. The film was also the number one selling DVD this week, but no figures were released.

Pacifier Makes some Noise on the Home Market

2005-07-09

The Pacifier took the lead on the Rental Charts on the Home Market and was the only new release in the to five. Vin Diesel's first foray into comedies led the DVD charts with $9.48 million, the VHS charts with $1.29 million, and the combined charts with $10.77 million. It was also the best selling DVD for the week, but as usual there were no sales numbers released.

DVD Releases for June 28, 2005

2005-06-27

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases, classics and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. Yet another bad week for first-run releases, in fact, there's not a single wide release I'll be picking up till August. This week the best of the bunch is again from the TV on DVD selection, but surprisingly it isn't a full season set. Normally I refuse to buy TV on DVD, but I'll make an exception for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Indecision 2004 - Buy from Amazon, which is easily the DVD pick of the week.

Pacifier Gets Moviegoers Excited

2005-03-07

Overall it was a good weekend as every movie in the top five matched expectations, or at least came very close, and the number one film topped predictions by a wide, wide margin. However, the news was not all good, as the weekend was relatively flat from last week with just a 1.1% increase. Compared to last year the figure was much worse at 14.5% decrease. 2005's lead over 2004 evaporated to just 1%, $1.427 billion to $1.413 billion.

New Movies Getting Cool Reception with Critics

2005-03-04

Three new films open in wide release (or, in the case of one of the films, semi-wide release), one more film expands at the box office, while another could be propelled back into the top five thanks to a significant Oscars bounce. All in all, it's a very busy weekend for moviegoers.

Down Stays Up on Per Theater Charts

2005-03-01

Last week's winner remained the per theater chart champion, as Downfall earned and average of $15,704. That's down just 13.7%, despite it being a post holiday weekend and seeing its theater count quadruple; this bodes very well for the film's long-term success. The only other film to crack the top 10 was overall box office champ, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which averaged $14,771 in its 1,483 theaters.

Woman Makes Analysts Mad

2005-02-28

It was a shocking weekend at the box office, which is good, since the Oscars seemed safe and predictable this year. However, not all the surprises were pleasant and even with the top film more than doubling its prediction the overall box office wasn't that much higher than expected. It fell by 7.7% from last weekend and 22% from last year. Year to date 2005's lead was cut nearly in half to 8.6%, $1.244 billion to $1.145 billion. Look for that trend to continue next weekend.

Competition Weak on Oscar Weekend

2005-02-25

It's Oscar weekend, the weekend where the movie industry celebrates the best of the best, but ironically, the three movies having wide releases would hardly qualify for that description. It's so bad that two of the three films were not screened for critics. Ouch. Also ouch will be the effect the Oscar telecast will have on the box office, especially for films that are up for awards. Still, whatever they lose this weekend they'll make up for with the Oscar bounce next weekend. One last note, right now 2005 is about 14% up on 2004, that will change this weekend. In fact, the gab could be cut in half over the next three days.

2005 Preview: February

2005-02-01

Just one look at February and it feels like it's a worse month than January was. Maybe it's the fact that January was stronger than expected so February's releases look weaker by comparison. Or maybe it's the lack of a massive hit like we had last year. Regardless of the reason, there's little to be enthusiastic about this month.
