News Stories About Perfect Stranger

International Details - Winning by a Hair

2007-10-07

Hairspray managed to climb into sixth place by the narrowest of margins earning $4.59 million on 2073 screens in 37 markets for a running tally of $54.35 million. This includes a third place, $1.36 million opening on 302 screens in Italy, which is close to its opening domestically, when you take into account the relative size of the two markets. On the other hand, many muscials prove to be difficult to market internationally and it was never likely that this film would match its domestic run. However, it has already made enough to be considered a financial success.

DVD Rentals - People Stay Away From New Releases

2007-09-23

There was only one new release to reach the top ten this week, but there were a couple of changes in the top five. However, not in first place as Blades of Glory earned the hat trick with $5.49 million for the week and $21.99 million after three.

DVD Rentals - Summer Repeats

2007-09-16

There wasn't a single new release in the top five this week leaving the rankings identical to last week. This meant Blades of Glory remained in first place with $7.03 million in rental for the week and $16.50 after two.

DVD Sales - Blades Glide into First Place

2007-09-09

New releases were not that plentiful on the sales chart this week, but they did take the top two spots with Blades of Glory leading the way. Over its first week of release, the film sold 905,000 units for a total of $14.48 million in sales.

DVD Rentals - Blades Leads a Quartet of New Releases

2007-09-09

There was only one new release to reach the top five this week, or the top ten for that matter, as Blades of Glory opened with $9.47 million in rentals.

DVD Sales - Wild Hogs Ride Into the Sunset

2007-09-02

New releases weren't big sellers this week as Wild Hogs remained in first place despite falling more than 66% during its second week of release. It sold an estimated 738,000 units for a running tally of 2.94 million. That works out to $46.96 million in sales, including $11.80 million this past week.

DVD Rentals - Holdovers Hog the Top Five

2007-09-02

While there were plenty of new releases that charted this week, the top five was nearly identical to last week. In fact, the top four were identical, which left Wild Hogs in first place with $7.81 million in rentals over the week and $17.75 million in total.

DVD Releases for August 21, 2007

2007-08-20

This is another week without a first run release that demands to be purchased. That is not to say there are no first run releases coming out tomorrow, just none that need picking up. Fortunately, TV on DVD and Special Editions were able to pick up the slack. From the former category we have Ugly Betty - The Complete First Season and House, M.D. - Season Three that were contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. From the latter, we have House of Games - Criterion Collection and Serenity - Collector's Edition. And the winner is... Serenity - Collector's Edition. Buy it early, buy it often, and maybe we'll have a sequel before too long.

International Details - Bean Takes a Holiday from the Top Five

2007-05-27

Mr. Bean's Holiday fell one spot out of the top five this weekend despite showing some significant growth. The film did have a few openings, including a third place $165,000 debut on 56 screens in Turkey, but its biggest market was Germany where it grew 44% to $651,000 on 577 screens for the weekend and $22.52 million in total. Overall the film added $3.47 million on 2634 screens in 43 markets for a total of $176.19 million internationally with debuts in South Korea, Japan, and China, yet to come, (and of course it doesn't open here till August).

International Details - Slow Week Outside of Spider-Man

2007-05-20

The competition is still being pushed down by Spider-Man 3 and although there were half a dozen new releases to chart this week, it was still impossible to fill out a top 30 chart with any real details. For instance, Next had no major openings and its best midlevel was a second place debut in Malaysia with $115,000 on 30 screens. However, it was still able to remain in sixth place with $2.45 million on 1347 screens in 19 markets while its running total has grown to $18.94 million.

International Details - Not Much News to Report Other Than Spider-Man

2007-05-13

With Spider-Man 3 dominating the global market last weekend, there was very little else happening on the international charts that was newsworthy. With little in the way of new releases, or even expansion for holdovers, it was impossible just to fill out a top 30 chart. And with several films expected to attempt a worldwide opening over the next couple months, it will likely be that way till mid-August.

International Top Five - Wild About Bean

2007-05-02

There was a very close one-two punch at the international box office this past weekend with Wild Hogs just beating out Mr. Bean's Holiday $7.62 million to $7.42 million. Hogs had only one mid-level opening this weekend, but pulling in $74,000 on 47 screens in Turkey is barely worth noting. On the other hand, the film added $1.68 million on 583 screens in Germany to its two-week total of $5.28 million while adding $1.31 million on 412 screens in the U.K. for a three-week total of $8.54 million. Overall it earned $7.62 million on 385 screens in 40 markets for a running tally of $55.43 million.

International Top Five - Box Office is far from Wild

2007-04-25

With Spider-man 3 just around the corner, theater owners worldwide are clearing room for what is expected to be a record-breaking run. This has led to a recent downturn in the box office both domestically and internationally. Even so, there are a few reasons to celebrate, including the continued strong performance by Mr. Bean's Holiday, which remained in top spot for the fourth weekend in a row, pulling in $13.51 million on 5,928 screens in 44 markets for a total of $145.30 million. That was enough, in the end, to beat Wild Hogs into second place.

Disturbing News for New Releases

2007-04-23

It was a slow weekend at the box office as most of the new releases, and a couple of the holdovers, were unable to live up to expectations. How slow was it? The overall box office dropped below $100 million. It fell 25% from last weekend to just $89 million and that's a severe 19% drop-off from the same weekend last year. In fact this was the worst weekend since last September. However, it is important to note that overall 2007 is still ahead of last year's pace by 5% and most analysts expect many, many records to fall this summer.

International Top Five - Bean Breaks Through $100 million Barrier

2007-04-18

There were plenty of reasons to celebrate for Mr. Bean's Holiday at the weekend. Not only was it able to remain in top spot for the third weekend in a row, but it was also able to crack $100 million at the international box office and is currently sitting at $125.95 million. On the other hand, the film did suffer a 45% drop-off to $17.06 million on 4,211 screens in 45 markets, but that was largely due to the lack of major openings. Its best market of the weekend remained the U.K. despite the fact that it was pushed into second place with $3.03 million on 507 screens for a total of $36.29 million. Meanwhile, it also performed well in Germany ($2.11 million on 844 screens), Australia ($1.91 million on 342 screens), and Italy ($1.41 million on 429).

Friday the 13th Produces some Scary Box Office Numbers

2007-04-16

The weekend box office numbers were mixed. On the one hand, there was a small drop in the overall box office numbers with the total ticket sales coming in at $119 million, which was 4% lower than last weekend and 1% lower than the same weekend last year. However, while that's hardly a reason to worry, there were six wide releases meaning the merely average box office numbers had to divided up amongst a crowded field and that really hurt a lot of the new releases. In fact, only one of the six had any real reason to celebrate.

Movie Website Updates for April 8 - April 14, 2007

2007-04-14

Even with the extra day, it was a slow week for websites. There were a couple films to have their full sites go live this week, but in both cases there was a lack of features. The best of the list is Pathfinder - Official Site, but it's not up to the level of an award winner.

Six New Releases Search for Box Office Glory

2007-04-12

There's six new wide releases this weekend, but the overwhelming thought I have when checking them out is, "ZZZZZzzzzzzzz." There are two reasons for this. Firstly, there's not much here to get excited about; most are opening in less than 2,000 theaters and most are earning reviews that are terrible. Because of this, none look to be runaway hits at the box office; in fact, there's talk that Blades of Glory will again win the weekend box office race. The second reason for the snores above, last night was the start of the NHL playoffs and the Canucks played their first two games. Or at least that's how long game one lasted. Four overtime periods. So tired. Oh so tired. At least they won.

Contest - Hungry For Cool Prizes

2007-04-09

This is the week that Aqua Teen Hunger Force COLON Movie Film for Theaters opens... but it won't be featured on this week's box office contest. That film is such a wildcard, it would just be too cruel. Instead, we are going with the Perfect Stranger. Meanwhile, the prizes are two-fold with Mind of Mencia - Uncensored Season 2 on DVD and Rank on DVD. To win one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Perfect Stranger. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of both Mind of Mencia - Uncensored Season 2 on DVD and Rank on DVD. While the person who comes the closest to the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win Mind of Mencia - Uncensored Season 2 on DVD and Rank on DVD. 2007 Preview: April

2007-04-01

April is an interesting month to open a movie. Interesting, but not a particularly good month. This year it does start with Easter, but that's traditionally not a strong long weekend. Only one movie has topped $40 million over that weekend and only one other has cracked $30 million. Worst still, it's jammed right up against May, the start of the summer blockbusters season. Ironically, the closer you get to this most lucrative time of year, the tougher it is for films to make a buck. No movie wants to open the weekend before Spider-man 3, for instance. Overall, there are a few hits to be found in the month, and a few misses, but nothing that really stands out above the pack.

Movie Website Updates for March 17 - March 23, 2007

2007-03-24

Good week for trailers with several on the list, including a trio of major summer blockbusters. However, while those site will obviously generate the most traffic, they are not award-worthy sites, (at least not yet). The best site this week is Pathfinder - Official Site.
