Mr. and Mrs. Smith opened in Belgium with $1.7 million on 80 screens, easily enough for first place and had a similar result with $480,000 in Poland. It also remained in first place in France with $2.88 million, (despite falling 54% there) and in the Netherlands with $740,000. In Germany the film remained in second place for the third straight week with $3.06 million for a $17.06 million running tally. The film now have $140 million in territories where Fox is handling the distribution and $192 million overall.

Despite two new openers in the top five, Constatine remained the best on the rental market with $6.76 million in DVD rentals and $620,000 in VHS rentals. Its combined total of $7.38 million was 27% lower than last week, but it wasn't the worst drop-off in the top five.

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases, classics and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. Another slow week in terms of first run releases as The Upside of Anger - Buy from Amazon is the only one worth picking up.
For that matter, it's the only one worth renting.
Also coming out this week are a couple of dubious special editions and some TV on DVD that runs the range from underappreciated classics like 3rd Rock from the Sun - Buy from Amazon to nostalgia infused duds like Gilligan's Island - The Complete Third Season - Buy from Amazon.
The former is the second DVD pick of the week, the latter is not.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opened in three French speaking markets over the weekend and while it didn't finish first, it still had a great start.
In France the film earned $3,741,793 in 670 theaters for the best per theater average in the top ten.
The result was similar in Belgium ($250,000) and Switzerland ($190,000), giving the film $4.2 million for the weekend.

The Longest Yard opened in second place in Australia with $2.5 million. On the other hand, the film could only manage $750,000 on 260 screens in Mexico, not surprising since Adam Sandler has never been a big draw internationally, especially outside English speaking markets.

years since the groundbreaking anime film Akira was released in Japan, and now Katsuhiro Ôtomo is set to direct his first full-length anime since 1988. Steam Boy, which is set in Victorian England, is reported to be the most expensive Japanimation film ever, with a budget of nearly 2.5 billion yen, ($20 million.) Production, which initially began in 1995, should wrap up soon and Toho Films hopes to release it during the fall of 2003 in Japan. Worldwide release should follow shortly after.
While best known for directing Akira, Katsuhiro Ôtomo has also directed the live action World Apartment Horror and written many manga graphic novels and the screenplay to Metropolis.
