News Stories About Stranger Than Fiction

DVD Releases for December 2, 2008

2008-12-02

It's the slowest week in more than a month, which is not surprising since it is the Tuesday after Black Friday. That doesn't mean there are no top-notch releases this week, or major sellers. In fact, there are three $100 million hits from last summer coming out this week. However, to find the DVD Pick of the Week we have to go a bit further back, all the way back to 1942 and Casablanca - The Ultimate Collector's Edition on Blu-ray.

Casino Proves the House Always Wins at the Home Market

2007-03-24

There was another new releases to top the rental charts this week as Casino Royale earned $9.20 million during its opening weekend on the home market. This is not particularly strong compared to the film's theatrical run, but it was more dominant on the sales chart.

Home Market is Borat Great success! Is Nice!

2007-03-17

There was only three new releases to chart on the home market this week; however, they included the top rental this week, Borat. While it was absolutely no surprise that the film opened in first place, it was a bit of a surprise that it only managed $9.18 million while doing so.

Stranger's Top Rental Gets Flushed Away on Sales Chart

2007-03-10

There was only one new release in the top five on the rentals charts this week but that new release was Stranger Than Fiction, which took first place with $6.77 million.

DVD Releases for February 27, 2007

2007-02-26

Looking at this week's list of DVD releases, there's not a lot that jumps out as being a must-have. There are some releases that are good movies but have weak DVDs, like Stranger than Fiction - Buy from Amazon. Then there are releases where the opposite is true, like Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny - Buy from Amazon and to an even more extreme extent Tideland - Buy from Amazon. But for the DVD Pick of the Week we have to go back, way back, to 1965 and Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back - 2-Disc Deluxe Edition.

International Details - Babel Feels Oscar Bounce

2007-02-11

Babel just missed the top five this past weekend and showed that Oscar nods still meant something at the box office, at least internationally. The film added $5.16 million on 1467 screens for a total of $61.31 million so far. It was aided by a first place, $1.23 million opening on 256 screens in Russia, but that is one of the film's last significant openings.

Award Season - The Writing is On the Wall

2007-01-12

The Writers Guild of America is the last of the guilds to hand out nominations, which they did so this week. And while there are 20 or so categories, only two of them are theatrical.

Babel led the way when the Golden Globe nominations were announced today with seven nominations while The Departed was close behind with six.

International Details - Saw Sees Better Days

Potter Pushes Penguins to Top Spot

2006-11-21

There were a few surprises on the charts this week, including the number one film. But overall things played out almost exactly as expected, leading to a total of $146 million at the box office. This was 15% higher than last weekend but 19% lower than the same weekend last year. However, that was the weekend when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire opened and no-one was expecting this year to be able to keep pace.

Holdovers Save Weekend Box Office

2006-11-14

There were four new releases opening in varying degrees of wideness this past weekend, but none of them could live up to lowered expectations. This left the overall box office at $127 million, which was down about 2% from last weekend while up less than 1% from the same weekend last year. That's not a large enough increase to keep up with ticket price inflation, but any good news is still welcome at this point.

2006-11-10

2006 Preview: November

2006-11-01

Note: Article updated 11/18/2006 with correct budget for Harsh Times

It's that time of the month again, a time to look forward, but it is also a time to look back. October was a stronger month than expected and, while there are a lot of reasons for that, I think one must pay particular attention to the play of Taylor Pyatt. The departure of Anson Carter to free agency over the summer was troublesome and many felt finding a right winger for the Sedin twins was a key in maintaining or even improving upon last year's numbers. Without good chemistry, Daniel and Henrik might have taken a step back this year. However, with a team leading 6 goals, Taylor Pyatt is more than proving he can play with the speedy Swedes. ... What? Oh right, movies. It was a pretty good month for movies as well. November sees the beginning of the most important time of year for the movie industry. Not only do the holidays start with Thanksgiving, but this is also the time of year that award season really heats up. This means there is an excellent mix of blockbusters, especially family films, and critically acclaimed films hoping that first impressions are lasting impressions. It also means there are several limited releases that could expand wide later in their run; these include Fur, Bobby, For Your Consideration and others.
