News Stories About The Family Stone

Millions of Cheap People on the Home Market

2006-06-03

Cheaper by the Dozen 2 opened its home market run with an easily win pulling in $7.24 million during its first week of release. That's probably enough for the film to show a profit, something it just missed doing during its worldwide theatrical run.

Momma's Big on Home Market

2006-05-20

It was crazy busy on the rental charts this week with three new films in the top five and six in the top ten. Leading the way was Big Momma's House 2 with $6.92 million during its first week of release, which can best be described as average.

Home Market Numbers Bounce Back

2006-05-13

It was another busy week for releases with five of them charting, including three finishing first through third on. Leading the way on the rental charts was The Family Stone with $8.00 million over the week.

DVD Releases for May 2, 2006

2006-05-01

At first glance, there's not a lot coming out this week that seems award worthy. There are a few releases that I'm looking forward to, most notably Red Dwarf - Series 8 and The Red Green Show - 1997 Season, but while I'll be picking them up, I can't recommend them enough to give either of them the DVD Pick of the Week. Nope, that honor goes to The Tennessee Williams Film Collection - Buy from Amazon.

Turmoil on International Charts

2006-01-29

Late updates have changed some of the results on in International Top Five this week as My Boss, My Student crushed the competition in South Korea with $7.59 million on 450 screens over the weekend and $9.31 million in total. This meant that despite Brokeback Mountain earning a better than initially reported $7.39 million, it was pushed out of the top five and into sixth place.

International Round-up: Dick and Jane's Fun has Just Begun

2006-01-22

A few more markets helped Fun with Dick and Jane remain flat last weekend at the international box office with $5.25 million on 1,458 screens in 18 markets for an early total of $18.09 million. Its best market was Mexico where it opened in first place with $1.87 million on 418 screens while in Germany the film added $1.47 million on 478 screens for a two-week total of $4.39 million. The film's biggest running total still came from Australia, where the film has managed $7.39 million after three weeks, including $710,000 over this past weekend.

Clown has Kingly Run in South Korea

2006-01-15

The King and the Clown did something most films in South Korea can't, it showed strong legs. In fact, in grew by 22% to $5.76 million on 369 screens over the weekend and $16.82 million in total.

Heaven Just Misses International Top Five

2006-01-08

With openings in the U.K. and Australia, Just Like Heaven shot back up the charts with $4.70 million on 3173 screens in 32 markets for an international total of $32.33 million so far. In the former market is finished third with $2.06 million on 298 screens while in the latter it struggled to a sixth place finish with $932,000 on 168 screens over the weekend and $1.87 million in total.

International Details: Closed for the Holidays

2005-12-31

As previously stated, in many markets the box office was closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and as a result some studios didn't tracks the international box office numbers. This has left precious little to report outside of a few big hits. What little there is to report is here.

Box Office Scrooged

2005-12-27

Christmas wishes went unanswered this year as almost every film missed expectations, some by large margins. This led to a 14.4% drop-off from last weekend, but more importantly, a 18.0% drop-off from last year. Granted, the fact that Christmas fell on a Saturday helps explain some of that, but not all. Year-to-date, 2005 is still down 6% from last year and with less than one week left, that's roughly where it will end up.

International Details: Chicken Littler

2005-12-23

Chicken Little fell out of the top five with $6.81 million on 3697 screens in 32 markets for a $66.03 million running tally. The film had no major openings while holdovers varied from strong in France, (down just 29% to $3.03 million on 910 screens for the weekend and $7.75 million in total) to very poor in Italy, (down 59% to $658,000 on 367 for a $6.39 million total). The film has yet to open in several major markets including the U.K., Japan, and Germany and when it does it should have no trouble topping its domestic total since it is already more than halfway there.

Will it be a Holly Jolly Christmas?

2005-12-21

Over the next five days a total of eight movies will either open wide or expand wide. With that much competition, there is literally zero chance that all the films will succeed. In fact, chances are none will be able to unseat King Kong as the box office champ. Further complicating the prediction process, there are three groups of releases with two movies opening wide tonight, three more on Friday and three on Sunday. This column will deal with all of them.

Kong's King

2005-12-19

It was a good news/bad news weekend. Bad news, King Kong didn't meet original expectations. Good news, the weekend box office was still up 4.5% from last weekend, and more impressively and more importantly, it was up 20.2% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2005 is still down by 5% at the box office, and there's just no time to recover. However, the deficit is not nearly as bad as it looked earlier in the year.

Kong has Titanic-Like Start

2005-12-16

What should have been a weekend the movie industry would celebrate is now one filled with dread and foreboding. Saying King Kong didn't get off to the start the studio was hoping for could be the understatement of the year, but even so, a lot of analysts are cautiously optimistic that the film can rebound. Right now it's just a case of wait and see, but by the time Thursday's numbers are in, we should be in a much better position to know what the future holds.

Movie Website Updates for December 9 - December 15

2005-12-15

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. We've hit another slow patch for movie websites, which is not unexpected since the most of the new site on this list are for films that open months from now so there's hardly any content, or open during the dead zone that is January. I would say the best of the rest would be King Kong - Official Site, but it is not strong enough to win the Weekly Website Award.

Cowboys find Gold in Brokeback Mountain

2005-12-13

Brokeback Mountain was the big winner today as Golden Globe nominations were announced. With seven nods, it led all films, which is an important Oscar indicator.

2005 Preview: December

2005-12-01

After Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire saved last month, we have two potential monster hits leading the way this month. However, both will be compared to Lord of the Rings, and neither will be able to live up to that high standard. Even so, it should be a better month than December last year, but will it be too little, too late to save 2005's box office?

Since this is the heart of award season, there are plenty of films that are first opening in limited release. Some will get a wide release later in the month, while others, like Munich, The New World and Match Point, don't open wide untill after the new year, and will appear in January's preview.
