International Details - International Releases are Enthralling

2008-12-14

There were nine international releases making their debuts on the charts this week, as well as several holdovers. The best of these films was Forever Enthralled, as the Chinese film took first place in its native market and sixth place internationally with $6.15 million on 1375 screens.

DVD Releases for June 3, 2008

2008-06-03

This was a bad week for big movies, with not a single first run release is even worth rating a solid purchase, never mind being a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. There were a few other contenders for the title, including Dirty Harry Collection on DVD or Blu-ray. However, I found it impossible to decide which format was the better deal. Had the Blu-ray provided anything more than High Definition, or been a more reasonable price compared to the DVD, it would have been an easier choice. One of them is the DVD Pick of the Week, I just don't know which one. On a side note, there is an immense flood of Blu-ray releases, including a few I thought were coming out previously.

DVD Releases for May 20, 2008

2008-05-20

This week's list is dominated by Blu-ray releases. This is not surprising as this is the first week Paramount has released Blu-ray discs after dropping the format last August for an exclusive HD DVD commitment. However, it is another Blu-ray release that caught my eye: the National Treasure Blu-ray Two-Pack. This is the best format has to offer this week, but it is not the best movie coming out. If you want the DVD Pick of the Week, you have to grab Night of the Living Dead Buy from Amazon.

International Details - 10,000 Scores a Solid Sixth Place

2008-04-13

No new openings left 10,000 B.C. tumbling from second to sixth, but it still pulled in $5.83 million on 4302 screens in 61 markets for a total of $155.16 million. This is substantially more than it made stateside while it is about a week away from $250 million worldwide.

DVD Sales - Fantastic Four Rises to the Top

2007-10-14

There was a battle for top spot on this week's DVD sales chart between two new releases. Both Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer's and The Jungle Book's respective studios claimed top prize, but in the end Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer outsold The Jungle Book 1.47 million to 1.28 million and also led in terms of dollars, $24.04 million to $19.18 million.

DVD Rentals - Four had Fantastic Start on the Rentals Chart

2007-10-14

New releases were not very prominent on the DVD rental chart this week, but they did have two in the top five, including the overall champion, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which made $9.46 million during its first week of release.

DVD Sales - Knocked Up Knocks Out Next Best Seller

2007-10-07

New releases were not plentiful on the sales chart this week, but they did take the first two places. Leading the way was Knocked Up, which sold 2.29 million DVDs for first week sales of $43.87 million. (The studio has reported that it sold 3.5 million units, but this is likely the number of units shipped, not the number sold during its opening week.)

DVD Rentals - Competition Barely Bugs Knocked Up

2007-10-07

New releases took the top two spots on the DVD rental chart with Knocked Up taking in $10.11 million during its opening week.

DVD Releases for September 25, 2007

2007-09-24

The prime window for TV on DVD is closing, and the summer releases are starting to come out, so it is appropriate that the DVD Pick of the Week co-winners are one of each. This includes , Knocked Up - Unrated Collector's Edition and a belated win for Corner Gas - Season 4 - Buy from Amazon.ca.

International Details - Summer Transforms into Fall

2007-08-26

The Transformers fell out of the top five but still cracked 8 digits with $11.10 million on 54.92 screens in 52 markets for a total of $354.33 million. The film is mostly coasting on holdovers at the moment, but it did top the Polish market with $664,000 on 106 screens while its best market was Japan where it added $2.49 million on 592 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.98 million.

International Details for May 18

2007-08-05

No, this is not a repeat, May 18 is the name of a South Korean film that opened last weekend with $7.40 million on 534 screens over the weekend and $9.66 million in total. This was enough for first place finish in its native market and a sixth place finish internationally.

International Details - Transformers Remains Hair-raising

2007-07-29

The Transformers held on strong dipping just 7% to $33.77 million on 4626 screens in 41 markets for a total of $192.44 million. This includes an estimated $6.4 million from previews in the U.K. The film's only major opening of the weekend was Mexico where it placed first with $5.46 million on 410 screens pushing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into second place. The Transformers also continued its amazing run in South Korea adding $3.12 million on 442 screens for a running tally of $46.21 million, which is like making $500 million here given the relative sizes of the two markets.

International Details - Spidey Sinks to Second but Still Reaches Milestones

2007-06-03

Spider-Man 3 earned a comfortable second place earning almost as much as the rest of the films on this list with $21.07 million on 10,365 screens in 76 markets for a total of $501.00 million. It is only the 14th film to reach that milestone while it became the 16th film to top $800 million worldwide and has already climbed into 14th place overall. The U.K. regained the lead as the best market for the film adding $2.58 million on 460 screens for a total of $61.09 million. Japan took in $2.36 million on 630 screens while France made $2.31 million on 866 screens as the only other two markets to top $2 million over the weekend and the film now has $47.79 million and $48.55 million respectively. There were a quartet of led by Brazil, ($1.29 million for the weekend and $21.55 million in total); Spain, ($1.29 million / $22.49 million); Mexico, ($1.22 million / $32.90 million); and Germany, ($1.01 million / $27.16 million).

International Top Five - Spider-Man remains Strong as Shrek debuts in Second

2007-05-23

Spider-Man 3 earned its third, and likely last, first place finish on the international charts scoring $51.07 million on 13,491 screens in 73 markets. Internationally the film has amassed a total of $466.71 million, which places it 17th on the all-time chart while worldwide the film had pulled in $749.09 million and is in 23rd place there. Moving onto individual markets, France was the best bet over the weekend adding $6.5 million at 973, ahead of the U.K.'s $5.3 million on 508 screens, (although the U.K. still leads on the cumulative totals $57.2 million to $46.4 million).

International Details - Slow Week Outside of Spider-Man

2007-05-20

The competition is still being pushed down by Spider-Man 3 and although there were half a dozen new releases to chart this week, it was still impossible to fill out a top 30 chart with any real details. For instance, Next had no major openings and its best midlevel was a second place debut in Malaysia with $115,000 on 30 screens. However, it was still able to remain in sixth place with $2.45 million on 1347 screens in 19 markets while its running total has grown to $18.94 million.

International Details - Not Much News to Report Other Than Spider-Man

2007-05-13

With Spider-Man 3 dominating the global market last weekend, there was very little else happening on the international charts that was newsworthy. With little in the way of new releases, or even expansion for holdovers, it was impossible just to fill out a top 30 chart. And with several films expected to attempt a worldwide opening over the next couple months, it will likely be that way till mid-August.

Spider-Man Sinks Pirates in Opening Salvo of the Summer Battle

2007-05-07

Now that's what the Summer is all about. With Spider-man 3, the blockbuster season got off to a record-breaking start and that lifted the overall box office to amazing heights. Last weekend was one of the worst weekends in a long time, but Spider-man 3 alone earned nearly twice as much as the previous week's total box office and, adding in the holdovers, the 3-day take of $190 million was 144% more than last weekend, and already ranks as the fourth-biggest single weekend in history with reports for some movies still to come in (see the full list). More importantly, it is 72% more than the same weekend last year. Granted, last Summer got off to a slow start, but this is still a huge year-to-year increase and a very good omen for the season as a whole.

International Top Five - Wild About Bean

2007-05-02

There was a very close one-two punch at the international box office this past weekend with Wild Hogs just beating out Mr. Bean's Holiday $7.62 million to $7.42 million. Hogs had only one mid-level opening this weekend, but pulling in $74,000 on 47 screens in Turkey is barely worth noting. On the other hand, the film added $1.68 million on 583 screens in Germany to its two-week total of $5.28 million while adding $1.31 million on 412 screens in the U.K. for a three-week total of $8.54 million. Overall it earned $7.62 million on 385 screens in 40 markets for a running tally of $55.43 million.

April Ends with an Ugh

2007-05-01

Wow. That was one of the worst weekends I can remember. There was almost nothing worth celebrating as the overall box office dipped by 12% from last weekend to $78 million. That's nearly 24% lower than the same weekend last year and probably the worst weekend in more than a year. (We'll have more details on that when the box office chart is certified later this week.) The only silver lining I can think of is a possible reason for this massive dip. In my opinion, a lot of people who thought about going to the movies this weekend likely said, "Let's wait a week and catch Spider-man 3 instead." I can't prove this happened, but this time next weekend if Spider-man 3 has broken records, we'll know that it is a likely scenario.

Movie Website Updates for April 22 - April 28, 2007

2007-04-29

It's a slow week in terms of the cream-of-the-crop sites. There are a few that look like they could be award-worthy once they have a few more updates, but for the most part this week we have a collection that is rather average. There was one stand-out site, Evan Almighty - Official Site, and it was the only choice for the Weekly Website Award.

Calm Before the Storm

2007-04-26

It's the final weekend before the summer blockbuster season and it appears that while everyone is excited about Spider-man 3, almost no one is paying attention to this week's new releases. This could result in the worst weekend of the year and there is a possibility that no film will reach $10 million.

Contest - 2 Minutes Won't Be Enough to Win this Contest

2007-04-23

It is fitting that this week's box office prediction focuses on Next, which is about a man who can predict the future. To win one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Next. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Giorgia Fumanti - From My Heart on CD as well as Spongebob Squarepants - Friend Or Foe. Meanwhile, the person who comes the closest to the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Giorgia Fumanti - From My Heart on CD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

Movie Website Updates for March 31 - April 7, 2007

2007-04-07

It's the Saturday after Good Friday, which explains why this column was delayed one day. But while the Friday was good, this week's sites were mediocre, at least they were compared to high expectations. If this was January, it would be a great list. However, at this point of the year I'm expecting one potential summer blockbuster to have a major website launch each week, and that didn't happen this time. We still had an award-worthy effort with Grindhouse - Official Site.

2007 Preview: April

2007-04-01

April is an interesting month to open a movie. Interesting, but not a particularly good month. This year it does start with Easter, but that's traditionally not a strong long weekend. Only one movie has topped $40 million over that weekend and only one other has cracked $30 million. Worst still, it's jammed right up against May, the start of the summer blockbusters season. Ironically, the closer you get to this most lucrative time of year, the tougher it is for films to make a buck. No movie wants to open the weekend before Spider-man 3, for instance. Overall, there are a few hits to be found in the month, and a few misses, but nothing that really stands out above the pack.

Movie Website Updates for March 24 - March 30, 2007

2007-03-31

Awesome. We are finally getting some major updates to the summer blockbuster movies. The ones people are watching to see if they break records. This includes the first half of the massively interactive website for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Official Site. And while the site isn't done yet, it is still more than enough to win the Weekly Website Award.

Movie Website Updates for February 17 - February 23, 2007

2007-02-23

Big week in terms of flash sites launching, but a tough one when it comes to picking a winner. There were several sites that were contenders, and a few that will likely be winners after a few more updates, but none that stood out as the best for the week. It's almost like there were so many that were so close to winning the award that none were able to stand out and get me excited. However, there was one site that was updated this week that did, The Simpsons Movie - Official Site. This site did get a new look, but the real draw here is the first full trailer, to go along with the three previous teasers. Is that enough to make it award worthy? No. But while my rational side was distracted by a game of Sudoku the Fanboy in me made that decisions, and all Fanboy freak-outs are legally binding. Hopefully the final site will live up to the award. I have a feeling it will.
