News Stories About Hard Candy

DVD Review - Hard Candy

2006-10-13

When Hard Candy first came out it earned mostly positive reviews and started its run in limited release very, very well. However, as it expanded, it couldn't maintain its momentum and while $1 million is a reasonably strong run for a limited release, it is not as good as its opening weekend suggested. Now that it is out on DVD, will it find a second life, or be forgotten?

Slevin on a Lucky Streak

2006-09-30

Despite there being two new releases in the top five, and four on the overall charts, Lucky Number Slevin remained in first place with $5.13 million for the week and $12.59 million after two.

DVD Releases for September 19, 2006

2006-09-19

It's another week where first run releases are taking a backseat to limited releases and TV on DVD. That latter category is especially busy with the Fall season under way. In fact, it is from that list that we get the DVD Pick of the Week, My Name Is Earl - The Complete First Season - Buy from Amazon, but Hard Candy - Buy from Amazon earns an honorable mention.

International Details - Da Vinci Sinks Poseidon

2006-07-09

Last minute updates in weekend numbers showed that it was The Da Vinci Code and not Poseidon grabbing the final spot in the top five. It was an exceedingly close race with the former film topping the latter by less than $3000 both with $5.68 million. The Da Vinci Code earned its box office on 4352 screens in 57 markets while Poseidon needed just 3584 in 48. On the other hand, their running tallies are worlds apart with The Da Vinci Code leading $507.68 million to $94.72 million. That film became just the 12th film to cross $500 million internationally and is less than $20 million from overtaking Finding Nemo for 10th place on the international charts.

International Details - Furious' Start not quite Fast Enough

2006-06-25

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift started its international run last weekend but missed the top five with $7.93 million on 810 screens in 8 markets. The film took first place in five markets, including the U.K. with $3.35 million on 415 screens, in Australia with $2.28 million on 221 screens, and New Zealand with $444,000 on 53 screens. This is inline with what the original opened with in those markets, but with shorter legs due to Sequelitis it won't have as high a final box office.

Honesty is the Best Performer

2006-06-06

An Inconvenient Truth repeated on top of the per theatre charts despite a massive expansion this past weekend. Overall the film managed 9th place with $1.4 million in total and a $17,615 per theatre average. Second place again went to the overall box office champion, The Break-Up, with $12,760.

Candy Just as Sweet the Second Time Around

2006-04-25

There were no new releases to top $10,000 on the per theatre charts this weekend, but there were two holdovers to manage that feat. Hard Candy repeated on the top of the per theatre chart despite falling 35% to $18,901, which is a steep drop-off for a limited release. Second place went to Sir! No, Sir!. That film, which had been playing in San Francisco and Oakland for the past two weeks, opened at the IFC Center earning $11,930 during its first weekend there.

Per Theatre Chart is Sweet as Candy

2006-04-18

Hard Candy easily won the race on the per theatre charts, taking in nearly $60,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $29,025. Friends with Money slipped to second place with a still impressive $17,611 average in 42 theatres, which bodes well for Friday when it is scheduled to open in several hundred more theatres. The only other movie in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Scary Movie 4, with $11,167.

Limited Releases - Hard Time Picking Just One

2006-04-14

Usually there is one film that looks like it could breakout of its limited release and score some mainstream success, maybe. Some weeks no film has a real chance at escaping its art house origins. This week, there are three such films. However, while this is a bounty for moviegoers, the competition could hurt the films.

Contest - Kinky Contest - Last Minute Warning

2006-04-14

There's less than 12 hours to enter the Kinky Contest and for those who have been waiting for the theatre counts to enter, here they are for the relevant films.

Movie Website Updates for April 7 - April 13

2006-04-13

Back to normal levels of traffic on this list, but like last week there's not an over abundance of huge sites on this week's list. I hope that changes soon as the summer box office season is just around the corner. The best of the bunch this week is Hard Candy - Official Site, which has been slowly growing for months.

Contest - Box Office Prediction - Kinky Contests

2006-04-09

This week we have another three-way contest with prizes from Show Me, I Am a Sex Addict, and Barry Manilow. As always, the object of the contest is to predict the opening box office of a certain film with the person who comes closest to predicting the opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, winning the prize. To win Barry Manilow - Music and Passion, predict the opening weekend of Scary Movie 4. To win an autographed poster from I Am a Sex Addict, predict the opening weekend of Kinky Boots. Finally, to win a copy of Show Me on DVD, predict the opening weekend of Hard Candy. And, if that wasn't enough, of the three winners, the person whose margin of error is the lowest (on a percentage basis), will win a bonus prize. Entries must be received by 10am, Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

Movie Website Updates for March 10 - March 16

2006-03-16

Pretty average week with all best sites being previous award winners. The best of the rest was Silent Hill - Official Site, and even though this week's update wasn't huge, it was enough to make the overall site award-worthy.

Movie Website Updates for February 3 - February 9

2006-02-09

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. It was the busiest week in more than a month, but there weren't many big launches or massive updates, so it is the slow-growing V For Vendetta - Official Site that earns the Weekly Website Award.

Movie Website Updates for January 20 - January 26

2006-01-26

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. The winner this week was Curious George - Official Site, which was extremely well done, although it is aimed at a very young audience.

Movie Website Updates for January 13 - January 19

2006-01-19

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. It's busier on this week's list than it has in a while, but there was only one site that was in contention to win the award, Underworld: Evolution - Official Site.

Movie Website Updates for January 6 - January 12

2006-01-12

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. I can't say that it was a particularly busy week, but at least we had a site that was well deserving of recognition in Nanny McPhee - Official Site.

2005-11-10

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates, including this week's winner, Aeon Flux - Official Site
