News Stories About Unknown

Contest - This Contest Totally Rules

2007-05-07

Normally when it comes to these box office prediction contests, we choose the movie based on which film has the best shot at coming out on top of the charts. However, in this case that's Spider-Man 3 and no other film has a snowball's chance in Hades of winning the weekend, even if Spider-Man breaks the record for worst sophomore stint drop-off. Instead, we are going with the widest of the modest group of limited releases, Georgie Rule. Since none of the new releases seem likely to be box office hits, we're going with that theme and giving away some smaller films that came out during the past year, and that might have slipped under your radar. To win, you must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Georgie Rule. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Twelve and Holding and The Gathering. Meanwhile, the person who comes the closest to the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Unknown and Prey. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

Open on Fire on the Home Market

2007-02-10

Open Season led a large group of new releases this week, at least on the sales chart. On the rental chart it had to settle for a close second behind The Marine $6.32 million to $6.00 million.

DVD Releases for January 30, 2007

2007-01-29

I'm still waiting for the first "Must Have" DVD of the year (the first one of those doesn't show up until mid-February), but at least there are more that nearly make the grade this week than so far this year. Flyboys - Collector's Edition is better than the reviews would indicate, as long as you are in the right frame of mind. Lucky Louie - The Complete First Season is a great show but a little demented for a mainstream audience, and the same can be said for Viva Pedro - Pedro Almodovar Classics Collection - Buy from Amazon. But in the end I went with Red Doors - Buy from Amazon as the DVD Pick of the Week. Perhaps an unexpected choice, but it's a movie that should be seen by more.

DVD Releases for December 5, 2006

2006-12-05

The first week of the month is often the busiest, and that's the case here. However, while there are a lot of big releases, there's not much in the way of quality to be found. The best of the recent releases is Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest, but that was weak compared to the original (although a fun ride nonetheless). In order to find the DVD Pick of the week one must travel deeper... into the list of box sets (The Premiere Frank Capra Collection - Buy from Amazon), special editions (Black Christmas - Special Edition - Buy from Amazon), and TV on DVD (Dungeons & Dragons - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon). Of those three, I'm giving the honor to The Premiere Frank Capra Collection - Buy from Amazon, but all three could end up in my DVD collection before long.

Re-Volver-lution

2006-11-07

Just a trio of films in the $10,000 club, but they are managed that feat by a huge margin. Leading the way was Volver with just under $200,000 on 5 theaters for an average of $39,541. This is actually lower than the opening per theater average for Pedro Almodovar's previous two films, but his biggest opening ever. Second place went to the overall number one film, Borat with $31,607 while last week's per theater average champion, Babel, came in third with $26,264 despite a huge increase in its theater count.

Very Limited Releases

2006-11-03

Only five limited releases this week, only one of which has serious mainstream appeal. That film, Volver, is the odds on favorite to win top spot on the Per Theatre Charts while has a real shot at $10 million or more by the time its theatrical run winds down.
