News Stories About Premonition

International Details - Chuck and Larry Hold of Late Charge by Die Hard

2007-09-16

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry soared into sixth place with $4.72 million on 1521 screens in 21 markets for a total of $14.61 million internationally. The film finally hit big in a non-English speaking market earning first place with $1.27 million on 364 screens in Russia, but was soft in its debuts in South Korea and Italy. In Italy it managed $683,000 on 198 screens, but that was a tiny fraction of the first place film, while in South Korea it managed just ninth place with $275,000 on 123 screens over the weekend and $312,000 in total.

300 Times 5 Million Equals Number One

2007-08-12

New releases made their presence felt this week, earning five spots on the DVD sales chart, including the first two places. The battle for first place wasn't even close, though, as 300 made a dominant debut, selling 5.10 million units, which was 2 million more than the rest of the top 30 combined. Its opening week sales of $115 million was double the rest of the top 30. Second place went to Hot Fuzz with a very respectable 676,000 units; you must remember, this is a film that only cost 8 million Pounds to make, roughly, which is about $17 million American. The film made more than that in just one week on the home market in combined rentals and sales, so everyone involved must be very, very happy indeed. Pathfinder's sales were stronger than its rentals as it moved 562,000 units for a total of $10.10 million in sales, which was more than it earned theatrically.

DVD Charts - Number One for 23

2007-08-05

There was a close race on the DVD Sales Chart this week, with The Number 23 topping Zodiac 387,000 units to 352,000 units sold. Premonition fell to third place with 190,000 units sold and 791,000 in total. The Hills Have Eyes 2 placed third with 134,000 units sold for the week and 536,000 in total. Rounding out the top five was Shooter with 109,000 units sold for the week and 1.90 million after a month of release.

I Predict Premonition Will Win the Race on the Home Market Charts

2007-07-29

We finally saw a new release top the charts this week as Premonition was the number one renting and seller on the home market this week including taking in $7.29 million in rentals.

International Details - Transformers Remains Hair-raising

2007-07-29

The Transformers held on strong dipping just 7% to $33.77 million on 4626 screens in 41 markets for a total of $192.44 million. This includes an estimated $6.4 million from previews in the U.K. The film's only major opening of the weekend was Mexico where it placed first with $5.46 million on 410 screens pushing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into second place. The Transformers also continued its amazing run in South Korea adding $3.12 million on 442 screens for a running tally of $46.21 million, which is like making $500 million here given the relative sizes of the two markets.

DVD Releases for July 17, 2007

2007-07-16

Another week without a first run release that stands out and the limited releases, classics, and TV on DVD aren't able to fill in the gap. There were a couple of releases that piqued my interest, including Ace in the Hole - Criterion Collection and Yo-Yo Girl Cop, but neither really climb to the level of DVD Pick of the Week.

International Details - Box Office Broken

2007-06-10

With no worldwide opening this weekend, several studios tried to open / expand smaller films hoping to take advantage of the lull. Despite this influx of competition, Fracture was able to hold strong dipping just one place with sixth with $2.25 million on 1018 screens in 16 markets for a total of $22.33 million internationally. The film wasn't able to top $1 million in any single market, but came closest in France with $671,000 over the weekend for a $7.20 million running total.

International Details - Bean Takes a Holiday from the Top Five

2007-05-27

Mr. Bean's Holiday fell one spot out of the top five this weekend despite showing some significant growth. The film did have a few openings, including a third place $165,000 debut on 56 screens in Turkey, but its biggest market was Germany where it grew 44% to $651,000 on 577 screens for the weekend and $22.52 million in total. Overall the film added $3.47 million on 2634 screens in 43 markets for a total of $176.19 million internationally with debuts in South Korea, Japan, and China, yet to come, (and of course it doesn't open here till August).

International Details - 300's Last Stab at Glory

2007-05-06

300 was knocked out of the top five this week but still added $3.82 million on 3,537 screens in 52 markets for a total of $223.77 million. The film has yet to open in Japan, but that's about it at this point and there's little hope that the movie will hit any more milestones from now until then. However, it is already a massive hit and a huge financial boon for the studio, so everything it does earn will be pure gravy.

International Details - Good Start for Martial Artist Mutants

2007-04-01

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started its international run this past weekend and just missed the top five on debut. It did manage $3.92 million on 1,004 screens in 8 markets over the weekend and $4.53 million including previews. Of this box office, nearly half of it came from a pair of third place openings in England ($1.27 million on 368 screens over the weekend and $1.86 million in total), and Australia ($379,000 on 58 screens). The film also opened in Russia where the strong mutant demographic helped the film capture second place with $1.38 million on 360 screens. (That was a Chernobyl joke, by the way.)

Moviegoers Cheer Mutant Good Guys

2007-03-27

Six wide releases in a single weekend appears to have been at least three too many as most struggled at the box office. On the other hand, with so many new films opening and so many different demographics being targeted, it was a good week at the box office overall with receipts hitting $133 million, up 14% from last week and 22% from last year. Year-to-date revenue has already hit $2 billion and is clocking in at nearly 6% higher than last year's pace. More importantly, the number of big hits is increasing interest, and that can have a positive effect on future earnings. I feel confident in saying records will fall this year.

International Details - Taxi Still Picking Up Plenty of Passengers

2007-03-25

The French film, Taxi 4, just missed the top five with $3.94 million on 1255 screens in 7 markets for a total of $49.56 million. Obviously, most of that has come from France, $35.70 million in fact, but the film is also doing well in Russia with $10.63 million so far, including $2.22 million on 466 screens over the weekend.

Spartans Bend to Competition, but do not Buckle

2007-03-19

This proved to be a double milestone weekend, and a record breaker at that. Two films, 300 and Wild Hogs hit $100 million this weekend. Wild Hogs reached that milestone on Sunday the 18th of March, making it the earliest in a year for three new releases to have crossed $100 million. (The previous record was in 2003 when Daredevil made it there early in April.) Overall the box office was also hot, taking in $118 million. Granted, that is down 23% from last weekend, but it was up 10% from the same weekend last year, which is a much more important figure.

Weekend Estimates: 300 Crashes, But Doesn't Burn

2007-03-18

a href="http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2007/300.php">300 won the weekend, but it did fall slightly more than expected, declining to $31.2 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. That's down nearly 60% from last weekend. None of the openers came close to challenging it for the box office crown though. Wild Hogs held on to second place with $18.8 million, just ahead of Premonition's $18 million opening.

The other openers, Dead Silence and I Think I Love My Wife scored about in line with expectations, with $7.8 million and $5.7 million respectively.

Movie Website Updates for March 10 - March 16, 2007

2007-03-17

We are starting to get some serious updates on the websites for the summer blockbusters, however, it will be a few more weeks before this list is dominated by such films. In the meantime, it is a website for a new release, Dead Silence - Official Site, that is the winner of the Weekly Website Award.

Spartans Try to Hold Box Office Against Whelming Odds

2007-03-15

Three wide releases are opening this weekend, but none seem to have what it takes to overtake 300. On the other hand, none look like they will bomb either with all three tracking to finish in the top five. Even more importantly, the overall box office looks robust and should have an easy time keeping up with last year's pace.

Contest - Portent of Things to Come

2007-03-12

This week's box office contest has a very suitable target movie... Premonition, although that movie is more about Time Travel than psychic abilities. But I digress. The prizes this week are two copies of Lovewrecked on DVD. To win one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Premonition. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Lovewrecked on DVD. While the person who comes the closest to the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday, without going under, will win a copy of Lovewrecked on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

2007 Preview: March

2007-03-01

March, a month without a holiday. In fact, It's the only month without any holidays to help boost the box office and this prevents studios from releasing big blockbusters. However, it is not the weakest month either and there are a few midlevel hits coming out over the next four weeks and even a couple that could top $100 million

Movie Website Updates for February 17 - February 23, 2007

2007-02-23

Big week in terms of flash sites launching, but a tough one when it comes to picking a winner. There were several sites that were contenders, and a few that will likely be winners after a few more updates, but none that stood out as the best for the week. It's almost like there were so many that were so close to winning the award that none were able to stand out and get me excited. However, there was one site that was updated this week that did, The Simpsons Movie - Official Site. This site did get a new look, but the real draw here is the first full trailer, to go along with the three previous teasers. Is that enough to make it award worthy? No. But while my rational side was distracted by a game of Sudoku the Fanboy in me made that decisions, and all Fanboy freak-outs are legally binding. Hopefully the final site will live up to the award. I have a feeling it will.

Movie Website Updates for November 11 - November 17, 2006

2006-11-18

A lot of trailers on this week's list of websites. Not only were there a lot of site with just trailers, there were a few trailers without sites. On the other hand, there were also a few contenders for the Weekly Website Award. In the end it was The Children of Men - Official Site that took home that prestigious award.
