10 Million People Purchase Pirate DVDs This Week

2006-12-16

There were a boatload of new releases to chart this week led by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with $12.93 million, which was just a hair lower than Superman Returns's open week rentals from a week ago. This week that film placed second with a still impressive $10.71 million.

DVD Releases for December 5, 2006

2006-12-05

The first week of the month is often the busiest, and that's the case here. However, while there are a lot of big releases, there's not much in the way of quality to be found. The best of the recent releases is Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest, but that was weak compared to the original (although a fun ride nonetheless). In order to find the DVD Pick of the week one must travel deeper... into the list of box sets (The Premiere Frank Capra Collection - Buy from Amazon), special editions (Black Christmas - Special Edition - Buy from Amazon), and TV on DVD (Dungeons & Dragons - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon). Of those three, I'm giving the honor to The Premiere Frank Capra Collection - Buy from Amazon, but all three could end up in my DVD collection before long.

Invincible Remains so as New Releases Struggle

2006-09-06

Labor Day long weekend is the official end of the movie summer season and this year it ended on a high note. While the 3-day total was 1.4% lower than last weekend, the $102 million it earned was 8.7% better than the same weekend last year. Adding in Monday and the box office reached $129 million, up 9.2% from last year.

Invincible Tops Tepid Weekend

2006-08-29

As summer slowly winds down, there was the predictable decline from last weekend's box office. In total, ticket sales managed $102 million, down 7.9%, but more importantly up 4.6% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2006 is still ahead of 2005, but the lead has shrunk to 5% and we will need a strong fall season to maintain overall ticket sales growth.

Movie Website Updates for August 19 - August 25

2006-08-26

It's another busy week with nearly three dozen films being represented here. Taking top prize is Invincible - Official Site, although there were a few others that could take that claim before all is said and done.

New Releases Look Anything but Invincible

2006-08-25

The final weekend in August looks better than most, with one or two films that should finish with overall positive reviews. However, the box office potential for these films is very limited. It looks like Invincible should live up to its name, and if not, look for plenty of bad puns come Monday. I know I've already thought of a few.

International Details - Cars Can't Keep Up with Top Five

2006-08-13

Cars fell out of the top five landing in fifth place with $6.77 million on 3003 screens in 33 markets for a total of $127.79 million after two months on the international scene. Most of its weekend haul came from the U.K. where it had the best week-to-week drop-off in the top ten down 31% to $3.52 million on 512 screens for a two-week total of $14.33 million. This would have been a good result, if it wasn't for Pixar's track record in the market.

Movie Website Updates for August 5 - August 11

2006-08-11

The torrid pace of website updates continues with more than 30 films on this week's list. There were a few sites that really caught my eye, but it was Trust the Man - Official Site and its interactive map of New York City and its more than 2 dozen clips that won the Weekly Website Award.

Movie Website Updates for July 29 - August 4

2006-08-04

Third week in a row where the number of sites featured on this list has topped 30. With such a busy week it would take something different to win the award, and that's something Michel Gondry excels at delivering giving The Science of Sleep - Official Site the Weekly Website Award.

2006 Preview: August

2006-08-01

July finally brought us the year's first truly monster his with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, but outside that film, most of the month disappointed. With August being a bit of a dumping ground for films that didn't work out, the weakness in the box office should continue. Add in a few surprise hits last year and 2006 may have trouble keeping up with last years pace.

Movie Website Updates for January 13 - January 19

2006-01-19

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. It's busier on this week's list than it has in a while, but there was only one site that was in contention to win the award, Underworld: Evolution - Official Site.
