A strangely busy week for spotlight reviews with ten of them representing nine DVDs and seven Blu-rays. It would have been a bigger list, but several are late. As for the best of the best, I'm giving an tentative DVD Pick of the Week rating to Transformers - Generation One - 25th Anniversary Edition - Season One. However, those will to wait for the retail version of Matrix of Leadership - Complete Series, or willing to spend more on the limited release will want to give this one a pass. Additionally, we have a DVD Puck of the Week, as the Canadian release, Murdoch Mysteries - Season One, is a must have for all loyal Canucks. There was only one new release to reach the top ten this week, but there were a couple of changes in the top five. However, not in first place as Blades of Glory earned the hat trick with $5.49 million for the week and $21.99 million after three.

There wasn't a single new release in the top five this week leaving the rankings identical to last week. This meant Blades of Glory remained in first place with $7.03 million in rental for the week and $16.50 after two.

There was only one new release to reach the top five this week, or the top ten for that matter, as Blades of Glory opened with $9.47 million in rentals.

New releases weren't big sellers this week as Wild Hogs remained in first place despite falling more than 66% during its second week of release. It sold an estimated 738,000 units for a running tally of 2.94 million.
That works out to $46.96 million in sales, including $11.80 million this past week.

While there were plenty of new releases that charted this week, the top five was nearly identical to last week. In fact, the top four were identical, which left Wild Hogs in first place with $7.81 million in rentals over the week and $17.75 million in total.

New releases took three of the top five places on the DVD rental chart, including first place.
Wild Hogs was the overall rental leader with $9.94 million, which was in line with Disturbia's opening last week.

Wild Hogs led a healthy group of new releases to win the race on the DVD sales chart with 2.20 million units sold and $35.16 million in first week sales.

It's a busy week for first-run releases, with five such films appearing on this week's list.
But even with a couple of them being worth picking up, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters for DVD - Buy from Amazon, the cream-of-the-crop were releases of new special editions.
This includes two Jim Henson films, Labyrinth - Anniversay Edition and The Dark Crystal - 25th Anniversary Edition, but the best of the best is Taxi Driver - Two-Disc Collector's Edition.

Live Free or Die Hard was knocked out of the top five but still earned $7.15 million on 317 screens in 29 markets for a total of $192.83 million. The film opened in first place in four markets, with the biggest being Brazil at $1.60 million on 352 screens over the weekend and $2.07 million in total. At this pace the film would hit $200 million this weekend, even if it didn't open in Australia, while it will top Die Hard with a Vengeance's worldwide total shortly.

There was a troubling lack of final results this week and this results in a few studio estimates with some of the numbers. However, it appears that Black House was able to place fourth on the international charts after winning the box office race in South Korea The film was able to top its native market with $2.71 million on 325 screens over the weekend and $3.35 million in total.

Spider-Man 3 fell out of the top five for the first time during its run, but since it has already hit $500 million internationally and is closing in on $900 million worldwide, this is hardly a reason to panic. Over the weekend the film added $3.02 million on 3914 screens in 65 markets for a total of $543.87 million, putting it in 11th place all time, just behind Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings. Worldwide the film had $873.88 million at the end of the weekend, which means it also places 11th on that all-time chart, but will top Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets before long.

With no worldwide opening this weekend, several studios tried to open / expand smaller films hoping to take advantage of the lull. Despite this influx of competition, Fracture was able to hold strong dipping just one place with sixth with $2.25 million on 1018 screens in 16 markets for a total of $22.33 million internationally. The film wasn't able to top $1 million in any single market, but came closest in France with $671,000 over the weekend for a $7.20 million running total.

Spider-Man 3 earned a comfortable second place earning almost as much as the rest of the films on this list with $21.07 million on 10,365 screens in 76 markets for a total of $501.00 million. It is only the 14th film to reach that milestone while it became the 16th film to top $800 million worldwide and has already climbed into 14th place overall. The U.K. regained the lead as the best market for the film adding $2.58 million on 460 screens for a total of $61.09 million. Japan took in $2.36 million on 630 screens while France made $2.31 million on 866 screens as the only other two markets to top $2 million over the weekend and the film now has $47.79 million and $48.55 million respectively. There were a quartet of led by Brazil, ($1.29 million for the weekend and $21.55 million in total); Spain, ($1.29 million / $22.49 million); Mexico, ($1.22 million / $32.90 million); and Germany, ($1.01 million / $27.16 million).

Spider-Man 3 earned its third, and likely last, first place finish on the international charts scoring $51.07 million on 13,491 screens in 73 markets. Internationally the film has amassed a total of $466.71 million, which places it 17th on the all-time chart while worldwide the film had pulled in $749.09 million and is in 23rd place there. Moving onto individual markets, France was the best bet over the weekend adding $6.5 million at 973, ahead of the U.K.'s $5.3 million on 508 screens, (although the U.K. still leads on the cumulative totals $57.2 million to $46.4 million).

Spider-Man 3's performance at the international box office at the weekend was even more dominant than its domestic performance.
Over the weekend, the film added $84.27 million on 13,799 screens in 73 markets for a total of $385.43 million, which puts it on pace to become the biggest hit of the franchise by this weekend.
Worldwide, the film hit $625.66 million at the end of the weekend, and should also top the previous releases before long.
On the all-time charts, the film is now in 24th place and should catch the 23rd place film (Spider-Man 2), and the 22nd place film ( Spider-Man), before long while it could grab a temporary spot in the top ten.
Worldwide, it currently ranks 28th with eyes on Attack of the Clones.

Now that's what the Summer is all about.
With Spider-man 3, the blockbuster season got off to a record-breaking start and that lifted the overall box office to amazing heights.
Last weekend was one of the worst weekends in a long time, but Spider-man 3 alone earned nearly twice as much as the previous week's total box office and, adding in the holdovers, the 3-day take of $190 million was 144% more than last weekend, and already ranks as the fourth-biggest single weekend in history with reports for some movies still to come in (see the full list).
More importantly, it is 72% more than the same weekend last year.
Granted, last Summer got off to a slow start, but this is still a huge year-to-year increase and a very good omen for the season as a whole.

300 was knocked out of the top five this week but still added $3.82 million on 3,537 screens in 52 markets for a total of $223.77 million.
The film has yet to open in Japan, but that's about it at this point and there's little hope that the movie will hit any more milestones from now until then.
However, it is already a massive hit and a huge financial boon for the studio, so everything it does earn will be pure gravy.

With the start of the summer blockbuster season, all eyes are on Spider-man 3.
But the real question isn't whether Spider-man 3 will win the box office race, there's very little doubt that it will.
No, the real question is whether Spider-man 3 can break Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest's opening weekend record.

Wow.
That was one of the worst weekends I can remember.
There was almost nothing worth celebrating as the overall box office dipped by 12% from last weekend to $78 million.
That's nearly 24% lower than the same weekend last year and probably the worst weekend in more than a year.
(We'll have more details on that when the box office chart is certified later this week.)
The only silver lining I can think of is a possible reason for this massive dip.
In my opinion, a lot of people who thought about going to the movies this weekend likely said, "Let's wait a week and catch Spider-man 3 instead."
I can't prove this happened, but this time next weekend if Spider-man 3 has broken records, we'll know that it is a likely scenario.

The Reaping climbed into sixth place this past weekend with $5.98 million on 2634 screens in 39 markets for a total of just $20.38 million. The film had a couple respectable openings including South Korea where it made $1.17 million on 129 screens over the weekend and $1.34 million in total while it took in $335,000 in Brazil. However, in most markets the film stumbled, like in France where is placed seventh with $684,000 or the the U.K. where it placed eighth with $622,000 on 282 screens. The film debuted in ninth place in Australia, ($405,000 on 133 screens); in Russia, ($261,000 on 111); and in Germany, ($247,000 on 201). Mexico became the film's best market as it has pulled in $4.45 million in three weeks, including $589,000 on 350 screens this past weekend; this is just ahead of the $4.25 million the film has earned in Spain, but it only managed $334,000 on 299 screens this past weekend and will quickly disappear there.

It's the final weekend before the summer blockbuster season and it appears that while everyone is excited about Spider-man 3, almost no one is paying attention to this week's new releases.
This could result in the worst weekend of the year and there is a possibility that no film will reach $10 million.

It was a slow weekend at the box office as most of the new releases, and a couple of the holdovers, were unable to live up to expectations.
How slow was it?
The overall box office dropped below $100 million.
It fell 25% from last weekend to just $89 million and that's a severe 19% drop-off from the same weekend last year.
In fact this was the worst weekend since last September.
However, it is important to note that overall 2007 is still ahead of last year's pace by 5% and most analysts expect many, many records to fall this summer.

Disturbia held off a batch of openers to spend a second weekend at the top of the box office chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
The thriller earned a solid $13.46 million, down just under 40% from last weekend.
That was a couple of million more than fellow-thriller Fracture, which opened with an estimated $11.18 million.
Vacancy had the most disappointing start among the main contenders for box office victory, earning $7.6 million and falling behind Blades of Glory over the weekend to finish fourth.

There were a few new flash sites to launch this week, but while there might be a couple future winners among those sites, it was a long time resident on this week's list that walked away with top honors. That site was Hot Fuzz - Official Site, which probably could have won several weeks ago if the features were added all at once. However, it's much better to spread the updates out in order to get people coming back week after week.

Another week, another batch of new movies that are hoping to find a spot in the top ten.
While there are four wide - or wide-ish - releases, none are tracking with any real strength and there's a good chance Disturbia will be a repeat winner this weekend.
However, two newcomers, Fracture and Vacancy, stand a catch of stealing first.
All three films are so evenly matched, we might not know the winner until the final numbers are released on Monday.

This Friday Hot Fuzz finally lands on our shores and to celebrate we have four Hot Fuzz related prizes, some distantly related. However, since that film isn't opening truly wide, we will be basing this week's box office prediction contest on Fracture. To win one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Fracture. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a Hot Fuzz T-shirt, poster, and soundtrack.
Meanwhile, the person who comes the closest to the film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday, without going under, will win a copy of Hot Fuss by The Killers for no other reason than the names are sort of similar and I happen to have an extra copy on CD, as well as 3 Needles on DVD, and if that has a connection to Hot Fuzz I haven't found it.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

April is an interesting month to open a movie. Interesting, but not a particularly good month. This year it does start with Easter, but that's traditionally not a strong long weekend. Only one movie has topped $40 million over that weekend and only one other has cracked $30 million. Worst still, it's jammed right up against May, the start of the summer blockbusters season.
Ironically, the closer you get to this most lucrative time of year, the tougher it is for films to make a buck.
No movie wants to open the weekend before Spider-man 3, for instance.
Overall, there are a few hits to be found in the month, and a few misses, but nothing that really stands out above the pack.
