News Stories About Jet Li's Fearless

DVD Releases for December 9, 2008

2008-12-08

It's a deceptively light week with most of the top ten DVDs on Amazon's sales chart coming from The Dark Knight. In fact, that film is dominating sales so much that it has scared away most of the competition. Don't get me wrong, it's not the only release worth picking up, but the either the Two-Disc Special Edition DVD or the Blu-ray w/ Digital Copy are probably the best picks this week. Personally, I went with the Limited Edition Blu-ray w/ Batpod, but I clearly should not be trusted with money. There are other DVDs coming out this week that are also worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week, including Man on Wire - Buy from Amazon and Lost - Season Four - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray.

DVD Releases for November 26, 2008 - Part I

2008-11-25

Strange week. There are a dozen spotlight reviews on the list this week, but only one is for a DVD coming out this week. Ten are for DVDs that arrived late, and one spotlight review is actually early. As for this week's releases, there are not that many that seem like must-haves and none rise to the level of a DVD Pick of the Week. If I were to choose the best release found below, it's WALL-E, which came out last week. But even then I would chose the Blu-ray I reviewed last week over the DVD. Despite the lack of a top tier release, there were still more than enough that it was necessary to split the list into two parts. Part two can be found here.

Sunshine Just Misses First Place During Its Home Market Debut

2006-12-30

There were nearly a dozen new releases to chart this week, but it was a holdover that took top spot in an extremely close race. The Devil Wears Prada beat out Little Miss Sunshine at $8.88 million to $8.80 million.

DVD Releases for December 19, 2006

2006-12-19

This is the last week before Christmas and there are a lot of DVDs on this week's list that would make perfect last minute Christmas gifts. There are also a lot of DVDs that feel like they are being dumped on the home market in the hopes that they will be scooped up by ever desperate shoppers. Of the contenders, Jackie Chan's Police Story - Special Collector's Edition and The Simpsons - The Complete Ninth Season - Collectable Lisa Head Packaging came close to taking home the honor. But in the end I went with When the Levees Broke.

Season's Day in the Sun

2006-10-03

The weekend box office was a little softer that expected, but not so much so that one needs to worry about a continuing slump. In fact, the overall box office hit $100 million over the weekend and that was slightly higher than last weekend (by slightly, I mean less than 1%). However, that was up a huge 12.1% from the same weekend last year and that is the much more significant number.

Open Wide, Really Wide

2006-09-29

This week we have three films opening wide. Not only are they opening wide, but they are all opening at saturation levels (3000 or more theatres). Fortunately, the three films share little in the way of target demographics, but even so, at least one of them is going to be squeezed out by the competition.

Weekend Puts a Smile on even the Biggest Jackass's Face

2006-09-26

The weekend numbers were mixed, with more films beating expectations than not, but overall business still weak. Granted, the total box office hit $98 million over the weekend and that was up a huge 25.9% over last weekend, but more importantly this was still 2.1% lower than the same weekend last year. Hopefully this coming weekend will perform better, helping 2006 end its mini-slump against 2005.

Movie Website Updates for September 16 - September 22

2006-09-23

Slow week with just over half a dozen sites on the list. Of them, Renaissance - Official Site is clearly the best with a few others showing promise.

Number Two Aims for Number One

2006-09-21

The September dumping ground continues this weekend with only one real wide release with the other three new films opening in 1,500 to 2,100 theatres. On the other hand, the one film that is opening wide has a shot at becoming the biggest film of the month.

International Details - Sentinel Scores Its Best Weekend on International Charts

2006-09-17

The Sentinel climbed into 6th place on the international charts, the best placing the film has earned. It had a few openings, the biggeset being a sixth place, $410,000 debut on 89 screens in South Korea over the weekend, and $469,000 in total. On the other hand, the film place first in Belgium with $197,000 on 36 screens over the weekend and $226,000 in total and third in Denmark with $102,000 on 32 screens over the weekend and $108,000 in total. Overall it earned $3.44 million on 1423 screens in 22 markets for a total of $31.96 million, which puts it about a week from topping its domestic total.

You, Me, Dupree, and the International Details

2006-09-03

A first place opening in the U.K. helped You, Me & Dupree shoot up the charts nearly reaching the top five. While it did have to settle for sixth place, its $4.32 million on 914 screens in 8 markets was enough to push its still early international total to $13.01 million. Over in the U.K., the film picked up $3.10 million on 409 screens and that was more than double its nearest competitor. The film opened in Iceland over the weekend earning second place to Garfield's A Tail of Two Kitties with $42,000 in three theatres.

Movie Website Updates for August 26 - September 1

2006-09-02

Another busy week with plenty of top-notch films to chose from In the end, however, it was a two-way race between The Black Dahlia - Official Site and Stranger than Fiction - Official Site with the former site winning out by a narrow margin.

2006 Preview: September

2006-09-01

I've said it before and I'll say it again, September is the worst month of the year for movies. Not only are there usually very few hits released at this time of year, but the average is dragged way down by the large number of movies simply dumped on the market. This year the September dumping ground doesn't look quite as bad as years past. In fact, several low-level hits and maybe even an Oscar contender are opening wide. However, those few bright spots will be buried due to the sheer number of releases -- an average of 3 and a half films are opening wide each week.

Movie Website Updates for August 19 - August 25

2006-08-26

It's another busy week with nearly three dozen films being represented here. Taking top prize is Invincible - Official Site, although there were a few others that could take that claim before all is said and done.

International Charts Hospitable to Hostel

2006-04-02

Two openings in two major markets helped Hostel climb into sixth place with $4.03 million on 1120 screens in 27 markets for a running tally of $15.42 million. Its best opening was in the U.K. where it debuted in second place with $2.12 million on 304 screens while it struggled in Spain with just $1.01 million on 250. The film has already earned enough to show a profit even after taking into account P&A budget, exhibitor's share, etc. and should be able to double its current international total before its run is over.
