Seeing Saw

February 24, 2005

Note: Trying out a new column this week dealing with DVD and VHS rental numbers. Home market sales, on the other hand, are nearly impossible to find as figures are usually only released when records are broken.

The low-budget horror movie, Saw was the top rental this week bringing in $9.47 million in DVD rentals and $1.75 on the VHS side.

Only two other new releases landed in the top ten on either chart. The under-performing French remake, Taxi, placed second on the DVD charts with $7.59 million and third on the VHS charts with $1.57 million. And the under-performing performing arts flick, Raise Your Voice, missed the top ten on the DVD charts landing at 13th place with $2.20 million but finished in 9th place on the VHS chart with $540,000. Both films should have combined rental figures above their final domestic box office before too long.

Other films still going strong on the home market include The Notebook with combined rentals of $18.16 million since it was release two weeks ago and Ray, which has pulling in $20.31 million in three weeks. While First Daughter managed to top its domestic box office when its combined rental numbers $9.06 million to $9.27 million.
