Seeking for Number One

July 16, 2005

It looks like the home market is starting to recover from its extended slump as Hide & Seek was the number one with $11.71 million in combined rentals, $10.55 million from DVDs and $1.16 million from VHS. The film was also the number one selling DVD this week, but no figures were released.

The rest of the top five were all holdovers, and all held up well. The Pacifier slipped into second place with $9.57 million, down just 11% from last week followed by Hitch with $6.93 million. For the third week in a row Hostage was fourth on the charts, this time with $5.69 million, just ahead of Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, which added $5.42 million to its $19.74 million, three week total.

Only two other new release charted this week with Bride and Prejudice earning a 28th place finish with $820,000 just ahead of Canadian film, Going the Distance with $780,000.

Overall the rental market grew by 1.56% to $155.6 million for the week, down a barely measurable 0.1% from the same week last year. Year-to-date 2005 has seen $4.2 billion in total rentals, down 2.3% from 2004.

On the sale side, Hide & Seek also led the top five ahead of The Pacifier and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The oldest film in the top five is Hitch, which finished fourth in its fourth week of release. Rounding out the top five was Hostage.

Bride and Prejudice was the only new movie release to make the top twenty on the DVD sales chart finishing in 14th place. There was also a couple of TV on DVD releases charting, but we'll get to those in a minute.

The Chappelle Show Season 2 is still in first place, for the seventh time in eight weeks. Monk - The Complete Third Season opened in third place, just ahead of Fantastic Four - The Complete Animated Series; those releases also made it on the overall top twenty selling DVDs finishing in 19th and 20th places respectively. Rounding out the top five are two long time residents of this particular chart: Chappelle Show Season 1 and Seinfeld - The Complete Fourth Season.

One last note, last week The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Indecision 2004 finished in 10th, but this week it shot up to sixth place.
