In-Law has Monster Opening

September 10, 2005

For the first time in a long time it was a good week on the rental charts with two films cracking $10 million in combined rentals. Leading the way was Monster-In-Law with $11.06 million in combined rentals, $9.84 million from DVDs and $1.22 million from VHS. On the other hand, it came in second on the DVD sales chart, but more on that later.

Sahara came in a very close second place with $10.89 million, and in fact led the DVD rental chart with $9.87 million. The Ring Two fell to third place with $4.46 million, down 40% from last week. Beauty Shop held up much better down 29% to $4.36 million while Guess Who rose a spot to sixth with $4.15 million.

Three other new releases charted this week led by the direct-to-DVD sequel, Lilo & Stitch 2 - Stitch has a Glitch with $1.39 million for a 19th place finish. Next up was Ong-Bak with a 27th place, $820,000 debut and Chrystal with $640,000 and 30th place.

Like I said, the two $10 million plus films really helped the overall rental market pushing the total to $143.7 million, up 7.7% from last week and 2.4% from last year. 2005 is still behind 2004, but closed the gap to 4.3% with $5.2 billion.

It was even busier on the sale chart with four new releases in the top five with Sahara and Monster-In-Law finishing one - two. Lilo & Stitch 2 - Stitch has a Glitch opened in third place showing that these kinds of releases are still very popular at the home market. Coming in fourth was Sin City, which was the only holdover in the top five and the only film older than 2 weeks in the top ten. Lastly we have Ong-Bak which is performing much better on the home market than it did in theatres.

There were several other new releases that charted this week, but only two were movies. Tommy Boy - Holy Schnike Edition came in sixth while The Blues Brothers - 25th Anniversary Edition came in 11th place. On a side note, we will be having a full review and a contest for the latter film later in the weekend.

Over on the TV on DVD charts things were slightly busier with three new releases in the top five including Nip/Tuck - The Complete Second Season coming in first and Curb Your Enthusiasm - The Complete Fourth Season coming in second. The Simpsons - The Complete Season Six slipped another spot to third place while The O.C. - The Complete Second Season fell all the way to fourth. Rounding out the top five was House, M.D. - Season One.
