U.K. is Virgin Territory

The 40-Year Old Virgin topped the U.K. marked with an impressive $3.26 million on 394 screens in the U.K., but this is probably not indicative of its potential in other international markets. The film should do well in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, but will likely struggle in non-English speaking markets. (Germany may be an exception.)

  • Herbie: Fully Loaded slipped by just 27% in the U.K. to $580,000 on 405 screens, (topping $10 million along the way) but it plummeted nearly 60% in its second weekend in Italy landing at $480,000. Overall the film added $3.2 million to its $66.3 million running tally at the international box office.
  • Red Eye started its international run in earnest this weekend with debuts in the U.K. with a second place, $1.6 million start on 354 screens and a third place, $833,000 debut on 174 screens in Australia. It also placed third in Russia with $337,000 over the weekend and $670,000 since its midweek debut. Holdovers were not as kind as the film fell to just $80,000 during its second weekend in Hong Kong and $65,000 during its second weekend in Taiwan. Overall the film doubled its early international box office to $6.1 million so far.
  • Unstoppable. That's the only word to describe Welcome to Dongmakgol. The film finished first for the fifth week in a row in South Korean dipped just 10% this weekend while added $2.98 million to its $38.2 million running tally, which has it climbing the all-time charts in that market.
  • The Dukes of Hazzard was in free-fall losing 64% of its opening weekend in the U.K., easily the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top ten there. As a result, the film fell to fourth place with $1.14 million on 437 screens for a $6.20 million running tally in the market. It did have a few new openings this weekend including a respectable $164,000 on 27 screens in Greece, but failed to make in impact in either Italy with an eighth place debut with $279,000 on 106 screens. It did only marginally better in The Netherlands with $142,000 on 50 screens finishing in third place and in Taiwan with $40,000 on 13 screens, including previews. Overall, the film added $2.5 million on 1400 screens to its early international total of $9.7 million.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith was finally pushed out of the top spot in Spain as if fell 42% to $1.44 million for a $12.97 million running tally in the market. It also did well in France earning $755,000 for the weekend and $19.4 million in total, one of the film's best results in an international run that has grossed $231.5 million so far.
  • Dark Water has a trio of openings over the weekend finishing in third place in France with $922,000 on 295 screens, first place in Belgium with $204,000 and made $160,000 on Malaysia, (placing unknown). It also performed relatively well in Spain adding $410,000 to is $1.59 million running tally there. Overall the film made $2.1 million over the weekend and now has $12.4 million internationally.
  • The Transporter 2 debuted in second place in Germany with $1.177 million on 460 screens and opened with $170,000 on 27 screens in Austria, finishing in second place. Those results were not as strong as its run in France, but pretty good nonetheless. Speaking of France, the film added another $375,000 there to its $7.777 million total, but the film has likely spent its last weekend in the top ten there.
  • George A. Romero's Land of the Dead opened in Germany with $670,000 on 195 screens, which is a slightly better than average result. It also made $207,000 in Austria, but that was for the whole week. On the other hand, it lost more than half of its opening weekend box office in Japan landing at $366,000 for the weekend and $1.82 million during its run so far. Overall the film added $1.6 million to its $12.1 million international box office, which is not a bad result given the film's budget, but it is not meeting expectations.
  • Leave When Clapping remained in second place in South Korea with $1.19 million on 225 screens for a $14.68 million running tally there.
  • Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo opened in second place in Russia with $460,000 and held up extremely well in Spain dropping just 30% to $615,000. It's still early in the film's run, but its $4.8 million so far has to be looked upon with a bit of disappointment.
  • The Wedding Crashers dropped to second place in Australia, Holland and New Zealand with $880,000, $155,000 and $128,000 respectively. Those results helped push the film's international total to $47.7 million, which is dwarfed by the film's domestic total, but respectable in its own right.
  • Nightwatch made its debut in Spain with a $1.0 million opening on 250 screens. That's an excellent start for a film with a budget of just over $4 million.
  • The Business opened in its native market of the U.K. with $980,000 on 279 screens. It's a very typical entry in the British Gangster genre and will likely struggled outside of the U.K.
  • Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith had the best week-to-week drop-off in the top ten in Japan dropping by 31%, but it still dipped below $1 million for the first time in its nine-week run there. It did earn $916,000 over the weekend for a $77.3 million running tally in the market and $460.8 million international total. It's in 12th place on the international charts but would need more than $30 million more to top The Phantom Menace on the all time charts, which is unlikely at this point. Worldwide the film has $841 million and needs less than $25 million to top Finding Nemo for tenth place on the All-Time Chart, which is much more likely but still a challenge.
  • Monster-In-Law held up better than expected in Brazil with $910,000 for the week and $2.25 million in total. Internationally the film now has $55 million with stops in Spain, Italy and other markets left to go.
  • Sin City opened in first place in Chile the week before last with $106,000 on 25 screens, which was not only the best result overall, but the bet per screen average as well. This week, however, the film lost slightly more than half that falling to $52,000. It's biggest markets continue to be Germany where it added $493,000 to is $7.7 million total and Spain with $303,000 to its $5.5 million total. Overall the film now has $72.5 million internationally and should cross $150 million worldwide shortly.
  • To Paint or to Make Love dropped to fourth place in France with $800,000 for the weekend and $2.68 million overall.
  • A Sound of Thunder opened in Holland with $70,000 on 50 screens, which is a poor result but still miles ahead of what it made domestically. In Spain the film fell 46% to $700,000 for a $2.60 million total so far.
  • The Cave had the second worst week-to-week drop-off in the top ten in the U.K. plummeting 54% to $475,000 and 10th place. On the other hand, the film opened in first place in Hong Kong with $291,000 on 34 screens. Overall it has managed $3.7 million internationally and should easily top its domestic total, but it won't be enough to save the film financially.
  • Crash continues its strong run in the U.K. adding another $760,000 for a four-week total of $7.9 million.
  • Guess Who had a surprisingly strong debut in South Korea with $632,000 on 121 screens. On the other hand, it fell out of the top ten in Italy with $43,000 and barely hung in the top twenty in Spain with $64,000.
  • The Brothers Grimm grew during its second weekend in Taiwan finishing first for the second weekend in a row with $700,000 on 133 screens for a $1.48 million total in the market so far. If this result can be repeated in some European markets, then the film should show a profit much earlier than expected.
  • Stealth lost nearly two thirds of its box office during its second weekend in France landing seventh place with $457,000 on 292 screens. But that was a blockbuster result compared to the film's seventh place, $167,000 opening on 170 screens in Italy. So far the film has managed just $20.6 million internationally and will struggle to match its anemic domestic total.
  • War of the Worlds added another $545,000 from Japan this past weekend pushing its total in the market to $52 million and internationally to $349 million.
  • The Jacket may have lost nearly half of its opening box office in France falling to $544,000, but that was still enough to remain is sixth place and lift its total to $1.8 million there.
  • After a slow start in the U.K., The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl held up better than expected dropping just 27% to $533,000 for a $2.0 million running tally in the market. That helped the film to $15 million internationally, but it is unlikely the film will top its domestic total meaning profitability will have to wait till the home market.
  • The Descent opened in Spain with $498,000 on 228 screens, which isn't a bad result given its $6 million production budget.
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crashed in its debut in Spain bringing in just $60,000 on 52 screens. But did better in France remaining in eighth place during its third weekend there with $417,000 for at $3.1 million running tally. Overall the film now has $52 million internationally and will probably earn a profit for the studio with the initial home market release, especially with how many pre-orders the DVD has so far.
  • Downfall opened in sixth place in Mexico the week before last with $454,000 on 70 screens for the best per screen average in the market.
  • After the Sunset fell 44% to $444,000 during its second weekend in South Korea, which is about par for the market.
  • Mindhunters was one of the few films not to collapse this weekend in Italy dropping just 39% to $422,000 for the weekend and $1.89 million during its run. The film has not made $14.7 million internationally, more than three times what it earned domestically.
  • After a middling start in Germany, Must Love Dogs plummeted 65% falling from second to seventh with $350,000 over the weekend and $1.59 million overall.
  • Danny the Dog plummeted to just $117,000 during its third weekend in the U.K., its week-to-week drop-off of 73% was the worst performance there in the top twenty. It performed better in Australia but still dropped 50% to $220,000. So far the film has made 317 million internationally, but is unlikely to show a profit any time soon.
  • Howl's Movie Castle held up reasonably well during its second weekend in Germany dropping just 36%, but it got off to such a horrible start it hardly matters. This weekend it managed $270,000 this weekend for a $840,000 total. It is performing relatively better is Austria adding $37,500 this week for a $114,000 running total.
  • It was a milestone weekend for Fantastic Four as it crossed $300 million worldwide. On the other hand, it is coasting on holdovers with its best markets being France at $200,000 and the U.K. at $100,000. Perhaps when the film opens in Japan this weekend or in Italy next weekend it will bounce back into the top five.
  • In Good Company lost 58% of its box office during its sophomore stint in South Korea landing in eighth place with $258,000 for the weekend and $1.28 million during its run.
  • The Amityville Horror debuted in seventh place in Norway with $42,000 on 20 screens, mediocre at best. On the other hand, it held up well in Argentina adding another $75,000 to is $195,000 running tally there. Add in $146,000 in Italy and the film has $33.6 million internationally and $99 million worldwide.
  • Batman Begins is having an amazing run in Sweden finishing third during its sixth week of release there adding $213,000 to its $3.2 million running tally there. Overall the film has $166.5 million internationally and $370 million worldwide.
  • The Upside of Anger held up reasonably well during its second week in France with $200,000 for the whole week and $600,000 during its run there. It hasn't done bad internationally given its budget, but it hasn't been nearly as strong as it was domestically.
  • Tom Yum Goong plummeted by 60% in South Korea adding $170,000 to is $2.575 million total there. It also added another $22,000 in Hong Kong for a $1.48 million box office in the market. On a side note, the film has entered the top five all time in Thailand with $4.4 million there.
  • Mean Spirit lost about half its opening during its second weekend in Hong Kong landing in second place with $175,000 for the weekend and $670,000 so far.
  • Don't Come Knocking saw its opening box office sliced in half to $170,000 for the weekend and $610,000 for its run.
  • No Entry remained in 14th place in the U.K. during its second weekend there with $135,000. It also opened in Australia with $33,000 on 7 screens.
  • Tommys Inferno slipped another spot in its native Norway landing in third place with $134,000 for the weekend and $945,000 in total.
  • Drink Drank Drunk lost 60% of its box office this weekend slipping to third place with $125,000 for the weekend and $1.43 million during its run.
  • Valiant was knocked out of the top spot in Poland but still added $100,000 to its $730,000 running tally in the market. The film already has roughly double its domestic box office on the international scene, but even so its worldwide box office of nearly $50 million is a disappointment.
  • Kung Fu Hustle slipped out of the top ten in Australia with $45,000 and added another $46,000 during its second weekend in New Zealand. It also cut the figure needed to hit $100 million in half again to just $300,000.
  • Last Days opened in the U.K. in semi-limited release but could finish no better than 18th place with $74,000 on 30 screens. It did no better in Australia where the film managed $16,000 on 12 screens.
  • opened in third place in Argentina with $84,000 on 22 screens.
  • The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants lost 67% of its opening in the U.K. landing at 20th place with $66,000. It performed even worse in Spain lose nearly 90% of its box office plummeting to just $14,000 for the whole week.
  • A Lot Like Love fell out of the top ten in Italy with just $80,000 this weekend For a $450,000 run so far.
  • Kicking and Screaming was showing some strong legs in Australia, but this weekend it had the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top ten plummeting 69% to $77,000.
  • Sympathy for Lady Vengeance slipped out of the top ten in South Korea, but it was still able to make $72,500 and now has $22.6 million in its native market.
  • Me and You and Everyone We Know added another $71,000 to its $560,000 three-week total in the U.K.
  • Raise Your Voice collapsed in Italy falling to 18th place with $13,500, but it more than tripled weekly take in Mexico rising to $37,500. Totals in those markets were raised to $820,000 in Italy and $330,000 in Mexico while the film has earned $15 million worldwide, which is more than it cost to make.
  • P.S. opened in tenth place is semi-limited release in Australia with $48,000 on 21 screens.
  • Lords of Dogtown lost 69% of its opening in Australia landing in 14th place with $38,000. That lifted its total in the market to $217,000 and $1.2 million internationally.
  • The Honeymooners made its international debut with just $29,000 on 15 screens in the U.K., and that was for the whole week.
  • Mysterious Skin has most likely spent its last weekend in the top twenty in Australia adding $25,000 to its $175,000 running tally there.
  • Racing Stripes barely hung onto tenth place during its third weekend in Hong Kong with $13,000 on 11 screens for a $322,000 total in the market.
  • It's All Gone Pete Tong snagged the final spot in the top ten in Taiwan with $11,500, including previews.
  • The Woodsman opened in Norway with $10,000 on three screens, barely taking 20th place in the process.
  • Beauty Shop lost another 50% during its third weekend in New Zealand falling out of the top ten with just $10,000.
  • Primer added another $8000 on 5 screens in the U.K. to is $62,500 total in the market.
  • A Dirty Shame opened in Australia taking in $4770 in its lone theatre.
  • Robots has fallen out of the top ten in Japan, so unless the studio updates its international box office its last known result will be $132 million.
