Giving the Devil His Due

There was just the single film in the $10,000 club this weekend and it was the overall box office leader, The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The film, which was a surprise hit over the weekend, earned just over $30 million in 2,981 theaters for a $10,082 per theatre average.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • 2046 made it to $1 million over the weekend, barely. But that's still a pretty good result for a foreign language film.
  • An Unfinished Life hit the $1 million milestone during its opening weekend, which was a better result that I was expecting. Reviews that were less than enthusiastic will likely impact its ability to maintain this start as it expands.
  • Grizzly Man reached $2 million over the weekend and should have enough in it to reach $3 million or more.
  • As expected, The Aristocrats is starting to shed theatres, but that didn't stop it from hitting $5 million over the weekend. It is unlikely to reach any more major milestones during its run.
  • Another week, another milestone for March of the Penguins. This time the film topped $65 million and is now ahead of Herbie: Fully Loaded on the yearly charts. However, the film will also start losing theatres at an accelerated pace from now on making future milestone more difficult to reach.
