Heaven Just Misses International Top Five

January 8, 2006

With openings in the U.K. and Australia, Just Like Heaven shot back up the charts with $4.70 million on 3173 screens in 32 markets for an international total of $32.33 million so far. In the former market is finished third with $2.06 million on 298 screens while in the latter it struggled to a sixth place finish with $932,000 on 168 screens over the weekend and $1.87 million in total.

Here's a round-up of how other movies are faring in the international markets:

  • The King and the Clown opened in first place in its native in South Korea with $4.60 million over the weekend and $5.99 million in total. This is just the latest in a series of local films to dominate the market, but that is not surprising since there is a strict quota system there to help boost the local film industry.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith continues to wrap up its international run with $3.86 million on 422 screens in just 3 markets for an international total of $280.60 million. That's good enough for fifth place on the yearly charts, but it won't stay there for long as both Narnia and King Kong are closing in fast.
  • Natale A Miami remained in first place in Italy despite falling 28% to $3.02 million. Overall the film made $3.44 million internationally for a three-week total of $21.08 million.
  • For the second weekend in a row, Ti Amo In Tutte Le Lingue Del Mondo saw growth in its home market of in Italy this time growing by 5% to $2.35 million. Adding in the rest of its markets and the film made $3.12 million for a $15.15 million running tally.
  • The Family Stone was just behind with $3.11 million on 1332 screens for an early total of $11.12 million international. Highlights including a 10th place debut in France with $1.10 million on 197 screens and 12th place opening in Australia with $200,000 on 97 screens. On the other hand, the film is performing comparatively very in Germany where it added $419,000 on 256 screens to its $2.51 million, three-week run there.
  • Saw II also opened in France, but it did much better earning a fifth place finish with $1.62 million on 193 screens. That was more than two-thirds of the film's $2.37 million international box office, which boosted its total to $20.43 million.
  • The Art of Seduction fell 41% during its second weekend in South Korea but still held onto a spot in the top five with $2.22 million on 309 screens for a $10.26 million run so far.
  • Rumor Has It's run at the international box office hasn't been impressive so far. This weekend it added $2.18 million on 806 screens in 7 markets for a two-week total of $6.26 million. Half of that has come from Germany where the film remained in fourth place with $1.06 million on 412 screens over the weekend and $3.23 million in total. Meanwhile in Italy, the film pulled in $527,000 on 206 screens during its first full weekend there and has $1.61 in total. The film also opened in New Zealand with $26,000 on 49 screens, which may seem terrible, but it did only open on Sunday.
  • Typhoon took a tumble this weekend in South Korea falling to fourth place with $2.11 million on 208 screens for a $19.71 million total.
  • Fun with Dick and Jane had its first full weekend in the international charts, but with just $2.06 million on 376 screens in two markets for a total of $4.22 million so far. In Australia the film made $1.76 million on 244 screens for a $3.43 million total while in Japan it was down 40% to $300,000, which suggests it won't last in theatres too much longer.
  • The Turkish film, Organize Isler, fell fast during its sophomore stint in Turkey but still finished first with $1.69 million on 442 screens for a $6.42 million total. However, it fell even faster in the other markets it's playing in resulting in a $1.99 million box office over the weekend and a $7.63 million total.
  • Kirikou Et Les Betes Sauvages has shown amazing legs in its native France as it was down a miniscule 2$ to $1.59 million on 429 screens for a $9.61 million total so far. Add in other markets and the film made $1.91 million on 768 screens in five markets for a $11.09 million total.
  • Thanks to its release in France, The Constant Gardener was able to climb back into the charts with $1.87 million on 499 screens in 17 markets. I really thought the film would gain more traction internationally, but its debut in France was typical of its run, a run that has only brought in $26.73 million so far. It managed to earn an eighth place finish with $1.20 million while playing on only 200 screens, which would be like playing in less than 1000 theatres here.
  • Holidays helped Angel-A remain relatively flat during its second weekend in France down a tiny 2% to $1.50 million on 475 screens over the weekend and $3.80 million in total. The film is also playing in Switzerland where it added $32,000 on 9 screens to its $101,000 total and opened in Belgium with $86,000 on 21 screens over the weekend and $95,000 in total.
  • Yamato fell by 33% in Japan dropping to $1.57 million on 289 screens for a $12.21 million total so far.
  • The Chinese film Master Of The Crimson Armor a.k.a. The Promise, a.k.a. Mo Gik, tumbled down the charts down 67% to $1.52 million on 557 screens in 5 markets for a $18.15 million total so far. This film was supposed to be released by Weinstein Co. domestically, but negotiations fell apart and those plans were scrapped.
  • Palais Royale continues to show amazing legs adding $1.34 million on 454 screens in 3 markets to its $19.17 million international total. Most of that came in France where in earned $1.17 million on 424 screens for a six-week total of $16.85 million.
  • Blue Swallow opened in sixth place in South Korea with $1.27 million on 151 screens over the weekend and $1.81 million in total.
  • Match Point jumped back into the charts with $1.21 million on 357 screens in 5 markets for a $20.28 million international total. The biggest reason for that was the film's launch in Germany; there the film earned fifth place with $749,000 on 130 screens for the best per screen average in the top ten.
  • Zathura has struggled on the international market so far and it was no different this weekend as the film managed just $1.15 million on 858 screens in 7 markets for a total of just $7.17 million internationally. Holidays helped the film grow in Mexico to $555,000 on 350 screens for a $1.81 million total in the market while the film opened in fourth place in Turkey with $103,000 on 65 screens.
  • The Spainish film, Los Dos Lados De La Cama, opened in second place in its native market last weekend while this week it slipped 25% to third with $1.11 million on 371 screens for a $4.65 million total.
  • Memoirs Of A Geisha is taking full advantage of the holidays as it shot up 35% in Italy with $476,000 on 172 screens for a $2.34 million total in that market. Even so, its weekend haul of $1.10 million on 505 screens in 4 markets was disappointing, as is its $11.06 million international total so far.
  • The Producers has struggled domestically, and it looks like it will do the same internationally. The film opened on Boxing Day in the U.K. and earned $856,000 on 347 screens over the weekend and $2.25 million since its debut, which is a weaker than expected start. Meanwhile in Brazil, the film earned $91,000 on 70 screens, which was an even worse opening.
  • Arashi No Yoru Ni, (Stormy Nights) is still doing well in Japan adding $895,000 on 277 screens for a total of $8.46 million so far.
  • In a fit of irony, Doom opened in fifth place in Spain with $666,000 on 184 screens. So far the film has earned just shy of $25 million internationally, but even if it earned twice that it would still be looked at as a disappointment.
