Mountain Climbs Back Up International Charts

On the weekend before the Oscars are announced, Brokeback Mountain climbed a couple of spots to sixth with $4.44 million on 1368 screens in 30 markets for an international total of $53.89 million. New openings include Belgium where the filmed debuted in second place with $312,000 on a mere 27 screens for the best per screen average in the market. It wasn't as potent in Poland where it had to settle for fourth place with $194,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $217,000 in total. The film also benefited from soft in the U.K. where it slipped just 5% to $442,000 on 245 screens for a very impressive total of $15.83 million so far. It was even better during its second weekend in Holland where it rose 1% to $210,000 for the weekend and $562,000 in total.

  • Another local film topped the South Korean box office this weekend and Forbidden Quest pulled in $4.33 million on 428 screens over the weekend and $5.30 million in total.
  • Fun with Dick and Jane opened in sixth place in France with $1.75 million on 368 screens. It also opened in the French speaking region of Switzerland pushing its weekend total in the country to $85,000 on 25 screens while it has made a total of $1.26 million in the country. Overall the film made $4.21 million on 1960 screens in 49 markets for an international total of $74.62 million.
  • Bambi 2 remained in the top ten with $4.02 million 0n 2011 screens in 25 markets for an international total of $21.03 million, which is probably what the film would have made domestically if it hadn't gone the direct-to-DVD route. In France the film was down just 18% to $2.07 million for the weekend and $10.87 million in total making it the biggest Hollywood film in France for the year so far. It performed even better in Mexico climbing from third to first with $667,000 on 335 screens for a two-week total of $1.75 million.
  • Chicken Little fell from fifth to tenth with $3.80 million on 1949 screens in 24 markets; the film now has an international total of $169.45 million while its worldwide total hit $304.08 million as of the end of last weekend. It's coasting on holdovers at the moment, including the U.K. where it slipped to second place with $2.14 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $19.26 million.
  • Munich saw its weekend haul slashed in half and it fell from second to 11th as a result. Over the weekend the film brought in $3.73 million on 2616 screens in 45 markets for an international total of $71.63 million, which is well above its domestic total but equally below expectations.
  • On the other hand, Final Destination 3 climbed from 18th place to 12th with $3.52 million on 589 screens in 7 markets for a still early international total of $14.81 million. Its best opening of the weekend was Taiwan where it debut in first place with $697,000 on 20 screens while its best market overall was still the U.K. with $1.69 million on 344 screens over the weekend and $12.37 million overall.
  • Date Movie shot up into 13th place with $3.33 million on 623 screens in 3 markets for a very early international box office of $5.48 million. It opened in first place in the U.K. with $2.25 million on 354 screens while it remained in first place in Australia with $902,000 on 223 screens for a two-week total of $2.59 million.
  • Despite having no major openings, Nanny McPhee saw its weekly haul drop by just 11% to $3.16 million on 1223 screens in 20 markets for an international total of $52.65 million. It doesn't open in another major market till April, but in that one month it opens in Italy, Spain, Mexico and Japan.
  • Casanova had one of the worst week-to-week performances falling from sixth to 15th with $2.95 million on 1727 screens in 21 markets for an international total of $15.80 million. The film opened in Mexico over the weekend but only managed seventh place with $319,000 on 142 screens. Its best market of the weekend was Italy where the film fell 41% to $613,000 on 236 screens.
  • Prime opened in Belgium but could only score $125,000 on 20 screens for a seventh place finish. In the meantime, it fell 30% in France slipping from sixth to ninth with $1.20 million on 237 screens over the weekend and $3.38 million after two weeks there. Overall the film made $2.92 million on 981 screens in 13 markets for a total of $29.27 million internationally.
  • Memoirs Of A Geisha peaked a long time ago and over the past few weeks are really fallen down the charts hitting 17th this weekend with $2.57 million on 1468 screens in 45 markets for an international box office of $83.09 million.
  • The New World doubled the width of its release and that saw it climb a few spots to 18th with $2.55 million on 810 screens in 12 markets for an international running tally of $8.96 million. Its biggest opening of the weekend was Spain where the film debut in third place with $774,000 on 185 screens while it barely made the top ten in Belgium with $48,000 on 10 screens.
  • Fauteuils D'Orchestre remained in second place in France with $2.43 million on 475 screens for a two-week total of $6.86 million. Adding in Belgium and the film made $2.46 million on 483 screens for a $6.93 million run so far.
  • The Star Of Perfectual Government debuted in first place in Japan with $2.43 million on 284 screens over the weekend.
  • L'Invresse du pouvoir, a.k.a., The Comedy Of Power, opened in third place in France with $2.32 million on 282 screens.
  • Get Rich Or Die Tryin' had a surprising start in France with $2.00 million on 245 screens, but that was still only good enough for 5 fifth place. Overall the film made $2.24 million on 404 screens in 7 markets and now has $11.31 million internationally.
  • Hostel opened in Russian, Australia and Italy over the weekend and did well enough to climb onto the charts with $2.09 million on 519 screens in 7 markets for a very early international total of $2.34 million. Its best market was Russia where it finished second with $676,000 on 145 screens, but that includes previews. Meanwhile, in both the other markets the film debuted in third place, but it earned $1.10 million on 277 screens in Italy but just $606,000 on 150 screens in Australia.
  • Notte Prima Degli Esami grew by 29% helping it remain in first place in Italy with $1.92 million on 280 screens over the weekend and $4.02 million in total.
  • Lucky Number Slevin made its worldwide debut in the U.K. scoring a third place finish with $1.87 million on 314 screens and that one result placed it 25th on the international.
  • Knayz Vladimir, a.k.a. Prince Vladimir became the first homegrown animated film to top the charts in Russia as it took in $1.82 million on 292 screens over the weekend and $2.02 million in total.
  • Good Night, And Good Luck grew by 2% in the U.K. climbing to seventh place with $718,000 on 139 screens. Overall the film made $1.81 million on 545 screens in 20 markets for a total of $12.55 million so far.
  • Derailed opened in a few markets over the weekend but failed to make much of an impact in any. For instance, it debuted in sixth place in Australia with $412,000 on 167 screens while in Germany it missed the top ten by quite a margin with just $288,000 on 210 screens. However, that was still enough for the film to climb back onto the charts with $1.70 million on 1188 screens in 21 markets for a international total of $12.22 million.
  • Oh! My God slipped to second place in South Korea with $1.69 million on 228 screens over the weekend and $6.63 million in total.
  • Je Vous Trouve Tres Beau slipped just 10% during its seventh weekend in France and that helped it climb back into the charts with $1.62 million on 451 screens over the weekend and $18.44 million in total.
  • Capote opened on just 50 screens in the U.K. over the weekend but still managed to score a tenth place finish with $412,000. It had similar results in its debut in Spain, (ninth place with $457,000 on 107 screens), and Australia, (12th place with $227,000 on 24 screens).
  • Sky High opened in a distant second place in Spain with $959,000 on 252 screens. Internationally the film has now earned $20 million
  • Underworld: Evolution fell out of the top 30 this weekend despite opening in fourth place in South Korea with $870,000 on 123 screens over the weekend and $1.09 million in total. Internationally the film as earned an estimated $25 million so far.
  • Cheaper By The Dozen 2 added another $550,000 on 350 screens in 6 markets to its international total of $42.96 million. The film opened in Germany over the weekend but missed the top ten with $345,000 on 150 screens.
  • Narnia fell off the charts this weekend, but it was reported that the film entered the top 20 on the all time international charts with an estimated $380 million.
