International Details: Syriana Slips out of the Top Five

The only opening of note for Syriana over the weekend was Turkey where the film placed third with $211,000 on 62 screens. Without a major opening, the film fell 35% to $3.68 million on 1992 screens in 43 markets and now has $27.35 million, which is still a disappointing total.

  • Date Movie doubled its market count and that helped it climb up the charts to seventh with $3.58 million on 1146 screens in 18 markets for a international total of $16.79 million. Its biggest opening came in Spain where the film finished second place with $1.52 million on 273 screens but its best opening was in Holland where it topped the market with $250,000 on 49 screens.
  • Underworld: Evolution opened in first place in both Brazil, ($545,000 on 153 screens), and in New Zealand, ($232,000 on 48). However, it still slipped a couple spots on the chart falling to eighth with $3.57 million on 1370 screens in 20 markets for a $41.69 million international total after nearly two months of release.
  • Failure to Launch made its first appearance on the international charts with $3.55 million on 1062 screens in 9 markets for a very early international total of $4.60 million. The film had a couple of strong debuts in places like Germany, (second place with $1.44 million on 347 screens), and Mexico, (fourth place with $644,000 on 235 screens). But struggled in most other markets like Denmark, (ninth place with $54,000 on 15 screens) and France, (14th place with $783,000 on 125 screens over the whole week). It did hold on better than expected in Russia down just 33% to $295,000 on 173 screens over the weekend and $1.13 million in total.
  • Bumer: Film vtoroy fell more than 60% during its sophomore stint in Russian slipping to second place with $1.49 million on 415 screens. But that was still more than half the film's $2.77 million international weekend and helped lift its total to $12.10 million.
  • Walk the Line is just wrapping up its international fun falling to $2.55 million on 1342 screens in 32 markets for an international total of $54.95 million so far.
  • Memoirs Of A Geisha is starting to shed markets as it fell 36% to $2.34 million on 1312 screens in 40 markets for a total of $96.52 million internationally. Even without any major openings, it should still top $100 million internationally before long.
  • Doraemon 2006 again had the best week-to-week drop-off in the top ten in Japan falling just 30% to $2.24 million on 312 screens over the weekend and $10.92 million overall.
  • The Spanish film Volver opened in first place in its native market with $2.17 million on 228 screens for the best per screen average in the top twenty there.
  • Bewitching Attraction opened in first place in South Korea with $2.08 million on 261 screens over the weekend and $2.54 million in total.
  • The Shaggy Dog made in into 16th place this weekend with $2.06 million on 589 screens in 7 markets for a two-week total of $3.04 million. The film finished in first place in Mexico with $1.31 million on 408 screens; this is no real surprise considering how well family films do in that market. More in line with international standards was its fifth place, $117,000 debut in Poland.
  • Final Destination 3 had a very disappointing debut in Spain failing to reach the $1 million mark with $973,000 on 255 screens for a third place finish. That was its biggest market as the film managed just $2.01 million on 999 screens in 13 markets for a $25.52 million international total.
  • Capote added another $1.86 million on just 625 screens in 34 markets for an international total of $11.57 million. This is a good rusult given its limited screen count, but disappointing compared to its domestic run.
  • See You After School missed first place during its debut in South Korea but still managed $1.79 million on 218 screens over the weekend and $1.99 million in total.
  • Eight Below, which is closing in on top spot for the year on the domestic charts, got its start on the international charts with a 20th place, $1.67 million debut on 368 screens in 4 markets over the weekend. The film topped the Hong Kong market with $$691,000 on 34 screens since the 16th, while in Japan it had to settle for ninth place with $548,000 on 221 screens.
  • Du Jour Au Lendemain opened in first place in France with $1.45 million on 271 screens while it added $121,000 on 33 screens in its second weekend in Belgium for a two-week total of $313,000.
  • Big Momma's House 2 continues to fall this week hittign 22nd spot with $1.65 million on 792 screens in 20 markets for an international total of $53.86 million.
  • Aeon Flux opened in Australia but could only managed second place with $682,000 on 174 screens. Even worse was its very steep 51% decline during its second weekend in Japan where it fell to sixth place with $672,000 on 274 screens over the weekend and $3.33 million in total. Overall the film made $1.61 million on 749 screens in 25 markets for a $22.10 million international total.
  • The Soccer film, Die Wilden Kerle 3, fell to third place in Germany with $1.38 million on 590 screens over the weekend and $8.73 million in total. Add in Switzerland and you have $1.56 million on 633 screens for a $8.96 million total.
  • Hostel added a number of mostly smaller markets but still fell to 25th place with $1.48 million on 779 screens in 23 markets for an international total of $11.93 million. The biggest opening came in Mexico but there the film could finish no better than eighth with $306,000 on 150 screens.
  • Les Bronzes Amis Pour la Vie is still hanging onto a spot in the top 30 with $1.47 million on 645 screens in 3 markets for a yearly best $82.95 million after seven weeks of release. It fell just 18% in France landing in fourth place with $1.29 million on 590 screens for a total of $73.32 million in that one market.
  • Helen The Baby Fox opened in Japan with $1.46 on 261 screens over the weekend. That gives it just above $5000 per screen average, which is the milestone that usually separates the long-term winners from the one week wonders.
  • Fun with Dick and Jane had one of the the worst week-to-week performance on the charts this week plummeting from 17th to 28th with $1.31 million on 1091 screens on 41 markets for an international total of $85.93 million.
  • This is probably the last week for Chicken Little on the charts as it was in 29th place with $1.31 million on 1247 screens in 21 markets for a total of $176.22 million.
  • The Hills Have Eyes held on better than expected internationally down just 33% to $1.30 million on 346 screens in 2 markets for a very, very early international total of $4.39 million. Its only opening of the weekend was in Denmark where the film barely made eighth place with $58,000 on 15 screens, (including previews) while in the U.K. is was fell from first to third with $1.24 million on 331 screens over the weekend and $4.33 million in total.
  • Essaye-moi opened in fifth place in France with $1.29 million on 159 screens for the best per screen average in the top twenty there.
  • Dobrynya Nikitich I Zmey Gorynych opened in third place in Russia with $1.24 million on 279 screens over the weekend and $1.33 million in total.
  • Firewall added another $1.2 million to its $11.8 million international total, but that wasn't enough to keep it in the top 30 this weekend.
  • Nanny McPhee slipped out of the top 30 as well, but the studio reported international earnings of $1 million over the weekend and $59.8 million internationally.
  • Yours, Mine and Ours opened in third place in Singapore with $145,000 on 23 screens while it missed the top ten in Australia with a mere $154,000 on 52 there. Overall the film added $900,000 on 234 screen in 13 markets to its $1.7 million international total.
  • When a Stranger Calls opened its international run with a first place finish in Australia, however, its box office was a mere $809,000 on 186 screens.
  • Un Mundo Maravillosa opened in third place in Mexico with $662,000 on 300 screens, which was the best opening of the year for a Mexican film in that market.
