Chicken Little Derails Competition

Despite a weak DVD, Derailed topped the rental charts with $8.39 million during its first week of release. Last week's winner, A History of Violence, fell 28% to $6.42 million and now has $15.42 million during its home market run. A pair of family films, Chicken Little and Dreamer - Inspired by a True Story, came in third and fourth with $5.68 million and $5.45 million respectively. Rounding our the top five was Walk the Line, which added $5.10 million to its four-week total of $34.19 million.

There were three other new releases to chart this week led by Capote in seventh place with $3.35 million. In the Mix debuted in 12th place with $2.31 million while The Squid and the Whale managed 30th place with $1.00 million even.

After a couple of weeks of strong numbers, the overall rental market slipped 2.5% to $161.6 million over the week, which down 5.6% from last year. Year-to-date, 2006 has now earned $1.9 billion and that is 2.6% behind last year's pace.

It was even busier on the sales charts with four new releases in the top five and 8 in the top twenty. Leading the way was Chicken Little, which is no surprise. The Unrated label helped Derailed finish in second place while Dreamer - Inspired by a True Story took third. The only holdover in the top five was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with a fourth place finish just ahead of by Capote.

South Park - The Complete Seventh Season was the best of the rest coming in eighth while fellow TV on DVD release, Justice League - Season 1 debuted in 15th place. In the Mix managed just 18th place while Batman Beyond - The Complete First Season rounded out the top twenty.

Looking at the TV on DVD charts, there were also four new releases in the top five and eight in the top ten. Three of those releases were also in the top twenty of the overall DVD sales, South Park - The Complete Seventh Season, Justice League - Season 1, and Batman Beyond - The Complete First Season, which obviously finished one, two, and three on the TV on DVD charts. Fourth place went to Grey's Anatomy - Season 1 while fifth place went to Mind of Mencia - Uncensored Season 1.

Of the three other new releases in the top ten, Bewitched - The Complete Third Season was the best finishing in sixth place. Fellow third season release, Tales from the Crypt - The Complete Third Season managed an eighth place finish while Over There - The Complete Series finished in tenth place.
