International Details - Asterix and the Big Box Office

The latest Asterix & Obelix movie, Asterix and the Vikings, opened in second place in native France with $3.64 million on 606 screens. The film also made $167,000 during its second weekend in Belgium for a $454,000 two week total. These films are very popular in France and other parts of Europe, but have never made the transition here.

  • Failure to Launch remained in seventh place with $3.58 million on 1606 screens in 19 markets for a running tally of $23.37 million. The film had one major opening this week as it debuted in third place in Australia with $1.11 million on 220 screens, which was a disappointing start compared to its domestic opening. The film was able to break $100 million worldwide during the midweek but won't be able to match its domestic total internationally.
  • Final Destination 3 opened in second place in Germany with $2.12 million on 356 screens, which was nearly double what the previous release opened with in the market. Overall the film made $3.46 million on 917 screens in 22 markets for a $45.28 million total internationally and more than $99 million worldwide. With several more markets left to open in, the film should become the biggest hit in the Franchise.
  • V for Vendetta is shedding screens and markets, but only fell 32% to $3.29 million on 1519 screens in 35 markets for an international total of $30.96 million after one month of release. The film had no major or midlevel openings this weekend and its best market was Spain where the film added $899,000 on 300 screens to its two-week total of $3.07 million. On the other hand, it did cross $100 million worldwide and that milestone should be enough to keep the studio satisfied.
  • La Doublure added another $3.25 million on 768 screens in 3 markets for an international total of $17.82 million. $2.95 million of the weekend figure and $16.35 million of the total came from its home market of France, where it place fifth during its third weekend of release.
  • Basic Instinct 2 had the worst week-to-week performance on the internationally charts this weekend. The film plummeted 49% falling from 3rd to 11th in the process with $3.19 million on 2768 screens in 37 markets for a very disappointing $26.71 million on the international scene. At one point, the Erotic Thriller was a easy sell internationally, but times have changed.
  • Fellow France film, Les Brigades du Tigre, opened in fourth place with $3.02 million on 522 screens in its native market, which was good for 12th overall.
  • Firewall added another 10 markets this week increasing it weekend haul to $2.84 million on 1790 screens in 37 markets for a total of $26.52 million. The film debuted in first place in China with $1.2 million on 305 screens while it had a very disappointing to start in Holland opening in eighth place with $106,000 on 44.
  • Crayon Shin-chan Vol. 14 opened in second place in Japan with $2.82 million on 288 screens, which was well above the $5000 per screen average that usually separates the winners from the losers in this market.
  • Jean-Philippe fell to sixth place in French even though it fell just 18% to $2.73 million for the weekend. After two weeks the film has made $6.84 million in its native market.
  • My Scary Girl remained in first place in South Korea down a mere 17% to $2.40 million on 310 screens over the weekend and $7.23 million in total.

  • She's The Man disappointed in its only midlevel opening of the week as it finished in ninth place in New Zealand with $48,000 on 30 screens. However, of the six films that opened in wide release this weekend, none were able to earn a per screen average at $2000 or better. The film fared better in the U.K. down 40% to $1.06 million on 306 screens and $4.20 million in total while it was even better in Australia down just 28% to $657,000 on 138 screens and $1.95 million in total. Overall the film made $1.81 million on 533 screens in 6 markets for an early international total of $7.18 million.
  • Yours, Mine and Ours opened in Spain and that helped its weekend haul climb 10% to $1.74 million on 1066 screens in 21 markets for a total of just $10.35 million on the international scene. In Spain the film finished in eighth place with $470,000 on 100 screens while in Mexico it slipped just 12% to $726,000 on 327 screens over the weekend and $2.51 million in total.

  • Piranha Hunt fell more than 50% during its second weekend in Russia slipping to third with $1.26 million on 407 screens over the weekend and $5.14 million in total. However, it did add a few more smaller markets and that helped it earn $1.65 million over the weekend and $5.60 million in total.

  • Take the Lead started its international run with openings in three markets most notably the U.K. There it finished fourth with $1.10 million on 301 screens while adding in the other two markets it made $1.31 million on 351 screens. This is not a great start, but it could have been worse.
  • Hostel opened two more markets this weekend, Brazil and Taiwan. In the former it opened in fourth place with $285,000 while it topped the latter market with $260,000 on 18 screens. Overall the film made $1.31 million on 669 screens in 24 markets and has brought in $24.63 million in total.
  • Big Momma's House 2 had a pair of fourth place openings in both Germany, ($880,000 on 401 screens), and Switzerland, ($135,000 on 18 screens). Quite frankly, I was expecting more from Germany as the movie seemed to match their tastes quite well. Overall the film added $1.37 million to its international total of $63.10 million, a total that will top its domestic total before too long.
  • Hoodwinked! had one of the worst week-to-week performance on the charts this week falling from 13th to 25th with $1.28 million on 261 screens in 5 markets for a total of $17.25 million. The film has yet to open in many major markets, but it will likely not top its domestic box office.

Its biggest was France where it opened in 10th place with $541,000 on 110 screens while its best was Italy where it opened in sixth place with $439,000 on 133 screens. So far the film has made $15.30 million internationally, which is about half of what it earned domestically.
  • Two opposing forces were at work in Japan with the The Producers. On the one hand, it opened with less than $5000 per screen, which usually means a very short run.
