International Details - Asterix and the Big Box Office

The latest Asterix & Obelix movie, Asterix and the Vikings, opened in second place in native France with $3.64 million on 606 screens. The film also made $167,000 during its second weekend in Belgium for a $454,000 two week total. These films are very popular in France and other parts of Europe, but have never made the transition here.

  • Failure to Launch remained in seventh place with $3.58 million on 1606 screens in 19 markets for a running tally of $23.37 million. The film had one major opening this week as it debuted in third place in Australia with $1.11 million on 220 screens, which was a disappointing start compared to its domestic opening. The film was able to break $100 million worldwide during the midweek but won't be able to match its domestic total internationally.
  • Final Destination 3 opened in second place in Germany with $2.12 million on 356 screens, which was nearly double what the previous release opened with in the market. Overall the film made $3.46 million on 917 screens in 22 markets for a $45.28 million total internationally and more than $99 million worldwide. With several more markets left to open in, the film should become the biggest hit in the Franchise.
  • V for Vendetta is shedding screens and markets, but only fell 32% to $3.29 million on 1519 screens in 35 markets for an international total of $30.96 million after one month of release. The film had no major or midlevel openings this weekend and its best market was Spain where the film added $899,000 on 300 screens to its two-week total of $3.07 million. On the other hand, it did cross $100 million worldwide and that milestone should be enough to keep the studio satisfied.
  • La Doublure added another $3.25 million on 768 screens in 3 markets for an international total of $17.82 million. $2.95 million of the weekend figure and $16.35 million of the total came from its home market of France, where it place fifth during its third weekend of release.
  • Basic Instinct 2 had the worst week-to-week performance on the internationally charts this weekend. The film plummeted 49% falling from 3rd to 11th in the process with $3.19 million on 2768 screens in 37 markets for a very disappointing $26.71 million on the international scene. At one point, the Erotic Thriller was a easy sell internationally, but times have changed.
  • Fellow France film, Les Brigades du Tigre, opened in fourth place with $3.02 million on 522 screens in its native market, which was good for 12th overall.
  • Firewall added another 10 markets this week increasing it weekend haul to $2.84 million on 1790 screens in 37 markets for a total of $26.52 million. The film debuted in first place in China with $1.2 million on 305 screens while it had a very disappointing to start in Holland opening in eighth place with $106,000 on 44.
  • Crayon Shin-chan Vol. 14 opened in second place in Japan with $2.82 million on 288 screens, which was well above the $5000 per screen average that usually separates the winners from the losers in this market.
  • Jean-Philippe fell to sixth place in French even though it fell just 18% to $2.73 million for the weekend. After two weeks the film has made $6.84 million in its native market.
  • My Scary Girl remained in first place in South Korea down a mere 17% to $2.40 million on 310 screens over the weekend and $7.23 million in total.
  • Nanny McPhee continues to grow adding $2.28 million on 1294 screens in 31 markets for a total of $69.17 million. The film opened in Japan this week, but finished seventh with just $549,000 on 137 screens.
  • She's The Man disappointed in its only midlevel opening of the week as it finished in ninth place in New Zealand with $48,000 on 30 screens. However, of the six films that opened in wide release this weekend, none were able to earn a per screen average at $2000 or better. The film fared better in the U.K. down 40% to $1.06 million on 306 screens and $4.20 million in total while it was even better in Australia down just 28% to $657,000 on 138 screens and $1.95 million in total. Overall the film made $1.81 million on 533 screens in 6 markets for an early international total of $7.18 million.
  • Yours, Mine and Ours opened in Spain and that helped its weekend haul climb 10% to $1.74 million on 1066 screens in 21 markets for a total of just $10.35 million on the international scene. In Spain the film finished in eighth place with $470,000 on 100 screens while in Mexico it slipped just 12% to $726,000 on 327 screens over the weekend and $2.51 million in total.
  • Narnia barely hung onto a spot in the top twenty with $1.65 million on 1026 screens in 5 markets for a total of $445.42 million internationally and $737.03 million worldwide. It is only doing significant business in one market, Japan; there it added $1.48 million on 607 screens for a seven-week total of $51.95 million.
  • Piranha Hunt fell more than 50% during its second weekend in Russia slipping to third with $1.26 million on 407 screens over the weekend and $5.14 million in total. However, it did add a few more smaller markets and that helped it earn $1.65 million over the weekend and $5.60 million in total.
  • Now And Forever opened in its native South Korea with $1.46 million on 497 screens over the weekend and $1.61 million in total.
  • Take the Lead started its international run with openings in three markets most notably the U.K. There it finished fourth with $1.10 million on 301 screens while adding in the other two markets it made $1.31 million on 351 screens. This is not a great start, but it could have been worse.
  • Hostel opened two more markets this weekend, Brazil and Taiwan. In the former it opened in fourth place with $285,000 while it topped the latter market with $260,000 on 18 screens. Overall the film made $1.31 million on 669 screens in 24 markets and has brought in $24.63 million in total.
  • Big Momma's House 2 had a pair of fourth place openings in both Germany, ($880,000 on 401 screens), and Switzerland, ($135,000 on 18 screens). Quite frankly, I was expecting more from Germany as the movie seemed to match their tastes quite well. Overall the film added $1.37 million to its international total of $63.10 million, a total that will top its domestic total before too long.
  • Hoodwinked! had one of the worst week-to-week performance on the charts this week falling from 13th to 25th with $1.28 million on 261 screens in 5 markets for a total of $17.25 million. The film has yet to open in many major markets, but it will likely not top its domestic box office.
  • Keeping Mum had its best week during its international run since it was playing in its native market of the U.K. adding $1.23 million on 778 screens in 9 markets to its total of $12.07 million. Its best opening of the weekend was in Italy where it finished fourth with $592,000 on 233 screens over the weekend and $629,000 in total. Meanwhile, in Germany it fell from fourth to eighth with $366,000 on 409 screens for a two-week total of $1.35 million. Even so, the film has performed well below exceptions.
  • Lucky Number Slevin opened in fourth place in Russia with $351,000 on 139 screens over the weekend and $390,000 in total. Also, the film fell dipped 15% during its second weekend of release is Spain adding $751,000 on 231 screens to its total of $2.10 million in the market. Overall the film made $1.15 million on 440 screens in 5 markets for an early international total of $7.09 million,
  • 16 Blocks nearly fell out of the top 30 finishing in 29th place with $1.09 million on 551 screens in 8 markets for a total of $5.05 million. In Spain the film missed the top five with $675,000 on 238 screen over the weekend and $1.01 million in total.
  • Eight Below fell 30% landing in 30th place with $1.07 million on 871 screens in 15 markets for a total of $11.69 million. The film had no major openings last weekend, but opened in the U.K. on Friday.
  • The Fog opened in a pair of major markets over the weekend. Its biggest was France where it opened in 10th place with $541,000 on 110 screens while its best was Italy where it opened in sixth place with $439,000 on 133 screens. So far the film has made $15.30 million internationally, which is about half of what it earned domestically.
  • Two opposing forces were at work in Japan with the The Producers. On the one hand, it opened with less than $5000 per screen, which usually means a very short run. On the other hand, it is a musical and those are very popular there. In the end the latter won out as the fill dipped just 8% to $933,000 on 274 screens for a two-week total of $3.08 million. Overall the film made $965,000 on 313 screens in 13 markets for a total of $13.55 million.
  • An American Haunting doesn't open domestically four a couple of weeks, but it already started its international run with a sixth place, $960,000 debut on 269 screens in the U.K.
  • The Exorcism of Emily Rose ended its international run with a fourth place, $605,000 opening on 122 screens in South Korea for a weekend haul of $655,000 on 227 screens and an international total of $68.53 million.
