Home Market Numbers Bounce Back

May 13, 2006

It was another busy week for releases with five of them charting, including three finishing first through third on. Leading the way on the rental charts was The Family Stone with $8.00 million over the week. Second place went to Last Holiday with $6.60 million while Hoodwinked close behind with $6.08 million. The best of the holdovers was Aeon Flux as that film dipped just 22% to $4.76 million for the week and $10.95 million after two. Fun with Dick and Jane was the final film in the top five with $4.12 million over the week and $28.48 million in total.

There were two other new releases to chart and both were direct-to-DVD fare. End Game, which was originally planned for a theatrical release, opened in 20th place with $1.18 million while Second in Command opened in 24th place with $1.04 million.

Total rentals saw a 4.0% increase over last week hiting $141.8 million, which was 6.1% more than the same weekend last year. That was enough to lift 2006's year-to-date numbers to $2.8 billion and narrow the gap from 2005 to just 0.4%.

The same three new releases that topped the rental charts also topped the sales charts, just in a slightly different order. It was Hoodwinked that led the way while The Family Stone and Last Holiday opened in second and third place respectively. Aeon Flux fell from first to fourth while Narnia remained in fifth place during its fifth week of release.

There was only one other new release to finish in the top twenty, but it was not a movie. The TV on DVD release, Dinosaurs - The Complete First and Second Seasons enter the charts this week in 14th place.

With it finding a spot on the overall charts, it is no surprise that Dinosaurs - The Complete First and Second Seasons came in first place on the TV on DVD sales charts. Despite being releases with zero special features, King of the Hill - Complete Season 6 came in second place while The 3rd Rock from the Sun - The Complete Fourth Season opened in third. The only holdover in the top five was Grey's Anatomy - Season 1 in fourth place, just ahead of The Nanny - The Complete Second Season.

Leave It to Beaver - The Complete Second Season just missed the top five while I Love Lucy - The Complete Sixth Season opened in ninth place.
